What going on with the price of dogs

There are a lot of troll posts in this thread, not needed for a genuine dog owner who has just lost their dog.

Again, we're talking about genuine dog owners here. The issue like a few people have said is because of lockdown puppies. Everyone had the same idea and wanted a lockdown puppy, making them non-genuine dog owners. I started a thread around this time last year in the corona virus section about this issue.

Colleague of mine got on a couple years waiting list to pay a few grand for a puppy of specific breed and it wasn't that fancy and it was before covid too.

Guess that's what you have to pay if you're wanting that puppy time with the exact breed you want.

But you can definitely get a dog for much less.

The least expensive breeds at the moment seem to be working dogs. Border Collies etc.
The most expensive are handbag dogs and designer breeds such as Cockerpoos and Westypoos.

However, even generic "small brown dog" puppies seem to go for £500 now. A few years ago you couldn't give them away.

Sorry for your loss OP.

I lost my jack Russell in Dec 2016 at 16 years old and when I bought him from a farmer in 2001 he wouldn't accept a penny below £100!

I didn't want another dog for a while, but am coming around to the idea now. Our plan is to wait until international travel is more commonplace, have a few nice hols for a couple of years and then get a dog and holiday mostly in the UK with said dog.

Looking at possibly getting a Dutch Shepherd.

We paid £450 for our collie in 2013. She is a proper ISDS as well. Designer dogs are expensive but when friends come around and see what our dog can do they all want collies now :p.

I understand people like different things but a collie will do everything you want. Are easy to train, fantastic companions can be used as a guard dog if needed, perfect for children and can go on walks for hours on end without getting knackered. Working dogs in general just make the best pets imo.

Even before covid you would spend several thousand for a bulldog. Who need thousands spent in medical bills, can't walk, difficult to train and live about 5 years.

Whatever you do, PLEASE be careful.

My sister who helps with dogs that have behaviour issues was called in advance by a family that was about to collect a rescue street dog from Bosnia. They met up with the "rescue charity" at a motorway service station, paid £500 in cash.

When my sister met the dog, she found a dog that looked healthy, no skin issues, walked nicely on a lead and was adjusted and socialised with other dogs. Oh, and obeyed "sit" and "stay".

Rescue dog my backside.

My sister has told them that if they don't take it to a vet and get it scanned for a microchip, she will report it as stolen.

The daft prices will drive up demand. Which in turn means more dogs will be stolen.

Sorry for your loss OP. I'm sure waiting a while will be worth it.

We had plans to get a dog (pre-covid) but were waiting to move to a house with a garden etc. We're there now but definitely waiting to a) see how our work office schedules end up, and b) crazy prices to come down OR the inevitable surplus dogs in rescue centres that people let go of because of a).

It's beyond a joke. But people are paying these "breeders" the silly money and it is that which is driving it.

You can get the data on litter registrations for breeds from the KC and that will open your eyes.... All the "proper breeders" claiming to be breeding for the right reasons and not to make money yet there is more than double the litters being registered for so many breeds.

People paying £2500 for mongrels from strangers who have never bred dogs in their life. It's utterly ridiculous and all that is going to suffer at the end of this is the poor dogs.

Lost my dog in December and we really want a new dog but I refuse to give anyone the money they think they deserve for a pup.

Problem with the rehome places is many of them are being rehomed because they are mental. Same with cats.

or their previous owners just didn't know how to handle them.

i can foresee a lot more pets ending up in rehoming shelters for no other reason than they'd been bought on furlough and now people have to go back to work they can't keep up with walking etc.

Sadly going to happen. This is one of the reasons I'm more and more convinced pet ownership requires a license.
Put that little extra step in and people will think more about whether it's something they can do.

I was looking for a springer or lab recently but quotes of £3500 for either meant I've not bothered. £150 -£500 for run of the mill moggy kittens is also mental.

Tried approaching RSPCA and rescue centres but despite everyone saying they're full of dogs I couldn't find anything.

yep, if someone's kid starts acting badly then you almost always blame bad parenting, same thing happens with an animal oh it must be the animal is bad......

I've already seen heaps of adverts on Gumtree with people trying to sell their 8-12month old dogs due to the old "situations out of my control" being the reason.... Wanting £1000 or more for a dog you can't have any more is bang out of order. It's going on big time already and will only get worse.

That's just stupid. It's not about being "careful", its about using your common sense.

Sorry for your loss Chaparral. I lost my beautiful old boy, a Black Lab last October in the lockdown and it was completely heartbreaking.

I'd say think about it before rushing in too quick and give yourself a bit of time to process , but I wouldn't criticise if you did, every one is different.

I've been looking at ads since I lost him and prices are definitely much better, but i cant see say a pedigree Lab dropping back under £1000 just yet.

I just got a new Black Lab pup 10 days ago, paid £1500 for him, good parents, Kc registered etc, legitimate seller , so prices are definitely better.

He probably would have been anywhere from £2500 to £4000 at the start of the year. That said the litter did start off at £2000 each and prices dropped a bit as a few labs left and ready to leave.

This is why we have a Border Collie ourselves. Ours was considerably more than £450 though because of the stupid dog prices at the moment.

Beautiful. Ours will be 8 next month. Apart from having her bits done hasn't needed the vet at all bar injections etc. Still absolutely manic though :p.

I do fear a lot of dogs will end up being put in homes as people have bought them as a lockdown thing. Ours needs walks at least twice a day but we have the ability to do so. Having a dog is almost the same as having a small child and in some cases can live 15-20 years.

Some of the prices in this thread

I thought we got mugged when the wife paid £750 for our Cocker Spaniel puppy a few years back. Seems it was good timing instead.
