What have you done to your car today?

Only 40k out of a set of discs?

I only got 34k out of the fronts on the 328i. The indy i took them to remarked that in the past he used to see 3:1 or even 4:1 ratios between pad and disc replacements, now its often 1:1. Apparently ever since they stopped using asbestos in pads!

This is why quarter miles are a pointless measure because the 4wd launch hides it's true speed.

But terminal speed gives you a true reflection of a cars road performance. In short what happens when you hit the loud pedal once moving, on the roll acceleration which lets face it is what we all do a lot more, accelerating down a slip road, accelerating of a roundabout or just being naughty and lining up side by side with another car on dual carriage way and going for it. :D

You can have two 12s cars, one crosses the line at 105mph and the other at 115mph. So most just assume they are both the same as they both did it in 12s, but on a road accelerating from a roll the higher terminal car will just walk away.

Even a bad launch the terminal speed will still be roughly where it should be within a couple of miles per hour, the more you improve the launch, your 1/4 drops and your terminal speed increases. So in a truly powerful car if you get the launch perfect you will cross the line sooner and with a higher terminal speed.

I am the perfect example of a drag race noob and babying the car too much, crossing the line at 12.9@115mph in a car that others are doing in mid 11's at over 118mph. Andy in his TTRS was the same, he was doing 13-14s passes but at around 115-118mph, its an 11s car all day long, but when it comes to 1/4 mile racing particular in cars with a manual box the driver is the biggest influence and not everyone is a race god or willing to put their car through the level of abuse it takes to get the time the machinery is truly capable off. The simple fact is the TTRS was one of the slowest 1/4 mile cars on the day, but on the road it would have probably wasted us all with ease and this is why terminal velocity is a very important measure as it gives you an idea of the cars true capability.

So quarter miles are not pointless, as the terminal speed generally tells the true story. Or in other words terminal speed is car ability and 1/4 time is driver ability. :D

then the M3 will literally be walking all over you :D

Terminals are key - this is where a F80 M4 with JB4 is insane after the first 1/8th and they will do 120mph+

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm no fool when it comes to 1/4 times and terminals, I know what does and doesn't work on the strip and the road.

But... (small but) there is some satisfaction in knowing you can set times quicker (not faster) than a more powerful car with a very quick gearbox. When most cars show up at RYWB they never get near their supposed figures, but like Gibbo says, some are more brutal than others, but also on the road you can expect a lot of people to drive even less brutal than on the strip and hence be even slower..

Potential of a car is one thing, driver extracting it (skill or otherwise) is another as we all know! :)

FWIW Phil's MX-5 ran a higher terminal than me btw, but slower time. On the road I was gaining slightly, but that was before he'd upped the boost somewhat for his final runs :)

Had a warning icon pop up the other day after pulling up at home after a 60 mile drive but had no idea what it meant. I stopped the car, started it up again and went for a short drive and it went away. Just did another 50 mile trip today and it came on again about 2 miles from my destination but the car carried on driving absolutely fine.

Just looked it up and it appears to be an issue with the stop/start system which I usually turn off every time anyway so I guess as far as errors go, it's a good one to have

Well, following on from this one, I've had the icon pop up a few more times since. It was only when looking at my dash one evening that I realised I had no handbrake icon on at all. Also, the stop/start error icon only ever popped up as I was putting the handbrake on, every single time, so I suspect they're linked.

I popped the trim off around the handbrake earlier and saw this:

I guess that explains that :) Next up is the fun of getting all the trim off to get to the wire to be able to solder it back into place...

Yeah but quarter miles are no fun really on stock cars. Things like launch control make them so consistent there is little for driver to do

For anything DCT/DSG etc then I absolutely agree. RS3s AND GTRs everything we've been to Pod make pass after pass within a tenth if not a couple of hundredths.

FWIW the day I ran the 12.9 I ran that back to back with two passes at 13.0x which in a car with a manual gearbox and no LC is good going

Yeh I remember. 22 runs in one day trying to get my rover turbo under 14 seconds.

Last run of day was a 13.9 at 100mph.

I remember back then and back then that was a proper quick car!

How things have changed, where 300HP is like entry level and 500HP is normal. :D

Had an aircon service today. After the last couple days sitting in ball soup, it was obviously not working.

Anyway, they tried, but couldn't get it working. Air was certainly cooler on the drive home than the drive there though, so might just leave it a few more days before further investigation.

Someone decided my rear bumper needed some paint removing at a set of traffic lights, fortunately all the clips were fine and the parking sensor survived, they managed to hit the corner rather than go square on so it could have been a lot worse.

not today, but during the last days...
I've done myself:
Engine oil and filter.
Gearbox oil.
Upgraded the 18 wheels to 19s
Dyed my roof black as it was dark blue (this takes 3 days... 1st day you need to wash it properly and let it dry, 2nd day dye the roof and let it dry, 3rd day apply the waterproofing liquid)

Got it done yesterday:
Air con service and re-gas
4 Wheel balancing
4 Wheel alignment

Got 4 new michelin crossclimates fitted to replace the 10-12 year old P6000's that were on my spare 15" wheels.

Not really what I've done to my car today but some-one else.

After spending some nice amount of cash on some Rainsport 3's at F1 autocenter Lincoln the wife is given the car back job done. When I got home from work I noticed upon trying to get my moneys worth by checking out my nice new expensive tyres I see the paint has been chipped off the alloy wheel, looks like pressure from the rotating tyre remover did it.

I took it down for the manager to admire who was in Friday afternoon mode and couldn't careless, "it's just what happens" (his words). Needless to say I wasn't filled with the joy's of spring and expressed my months worth of anger upon him.

Why is it always me??

In fairness to them, it looks like the wheel has been refinished in the past and it wasn't prepared properly beforehand, so it has been easily chipped away.

That isn't the way for them to deal with it though.
