What have you done to your car today?

I see no reason whatsoever to do it while running. You're asking for trouble, as you might inadvertently dump a load of water into an intake and lock the motor. Bad idea.

I'd already got degreaser everywhere, so it just needed washing off. Not going to harm the motor, at any rate. Only if you set about asking for trouble do you get it (i.e. point-blank blasting a fuse block or control module for minutes on end).

*Edit*

And, of course, if you're running the engine it will likely be hot - which is the worst possible condition, if you're going to dump cold/colder water on it. Bad idea. You don't need it running to 'dry' components, they'll dry naturally - and most electronic components are already shielded against moisture and water ingress.

Air intake on most modern cars isn't inside the engine bay, and do you avoid driving in the rain in case the engine gets covered in spray?

Don't be silly. I'm just safely covering all the bases - because myriad cars, including countless older ones don't. Something like my Forester, for example, draws from multiple points - including a scoop at the leading edge of the bay, near the radiator. You could easily dump a load of water into that with no effort at all.

So, as a general rule of thumb, you just avoid directing substantial jets of water at any part of the intake for any period of time. Better safe than sorry. Doesn't take much, after all...

Cleaned it..

Broke Down and got towed to the dealer courtesy of the AA via Skoda Assistance.

Left without a car until Monday morning because the only available replacement they could find was a Vauxhall Adam. Precisely the sort of car to replace an Octavia, with a 1 year old + pushchair etc. and to carry all of our luggage for a family holiday on Monday. Not an impressive experience and a pretty stressful day trying to sort out something that should have been quite straightforward

Well, as expected my intermittent coolant warning was due to a small amount of air in the system. Followed the procedure the bleed, run the engine, cool down and bleed again at the weekend and no more warnings. Should have done it right the first time really!

Drove it, 100 miles. However something worrying has happened.

The car a SAAB 9-5 2.2 diesel has had black smoke coming from the exhaust for a while. Never been able to identify the issue. However, today going above 2K revs resulted in a blue sort of colour coming out. Then when stationary it would kick out a grey colour.

I'm really confused as to turbo issues or Not, suppose at 230K miles it wouldn't be a shock.

Sounds like turbo death to me.

Naturally that's what I think however there was no lose it power, hasn't burnt any oil (according to dipstick) and when I was following it to identify the colour it was black with a tint of blue.

I'm not shy with a spanner so might as well change the turbo, suppose it's had it's time.

You won't lose power until it seizes. Just take the intake off and feel for shaft play it's an easy diagnosis to make.

So you are saying take the intake pipe off and check for play in the blade that spins?

Apologies for sounding silly, I do a lot of reading before attempting things. If so.seems easy enough and shall try tomorrow.

Yeah intake side. Side to side play, don't use much force though.

Do you mean black smoke on idle, or when driving? Blue colour would say oil is being burned.

Check for vacuum leaks, intercooler hoses leak, loose joints at intercooler/egr end. Basically all pipes. I had intercooler hose leaks and it resulted in a lot of black smoke on boost + down on power. Vaccum leak resulted in white smoke when WOT.

Will check that tomorrow. The intake side is the one that cracked when my dad owned it so know which pipe now.

The black smoke is when driving. Used to be just when going above 3K but now seems to be through the rev range. Plus blue when in 5th above 2K revs.

Did check all the pipes for leaks when the smoke started but couldn't find anything. Think I'll drain the coolant, take the intercooler out and pipes after checking the turbo.

After 20K in 9 months something was going to give.
