What have you done to your car today?

Briefly drove the old family bus (S-Max) to move things around on the driveway as I needed to free up some space to get to our garage door. It really is absolutely knackered and I'm shocked that she never mentioned it to me sooner.

The brakes squeal horrendously and the juddering when trying to reverse it up the driveway is absolutely insane. It's not quite as bad when driving forwards but it's still far from happy about it. Obviously it's a completely knackered DMF and with the rest of the car's issues it isn't worth getting fixed.

Unfortunately now I'm starting to accumulate knackered cars so I need to get rid of them. What's the best way to go about getting rid of this one? It's got a bunch of issues - nothing that's really terminal as such, but a bunch of fairly expensive jobs that would still result in a tatty looking car on 170k miles so I don't deem it worth sorting out.

I'd probably get around £150 for it as scrap value, but despite the issues, surely it's worth a bit more than that? Obviously I'm not expecting any crazy amount of money but I figure even the wheels/tyres alone are worth £150, not that I'm in a position to break it myself.

Just put it on eBay with the issues mentioned, I guarantee you’ll get a fair bit more than scrap value for it.

Got quoted £500 to fix the 7G tronic, which is a reconditioned TCU from MB with the same warranty as a new one plus the transmission oil & filter kit, and labour. Could've been much worse. They said it wasn't worth fixing the existing TCU as it'd cost almost as much. Brand new TCU would've been £750 with labour and oil & filter kit.

The amount of paperwork they have to send to MB for it is ridiculous though, as it's a theft sensitive part. Multiple copies of utility bills, ID, V5, etc...
You location is mentioned as Oxon, where did you get this work done out of interest? I am always keen to hear of decent Mercedes shops in the area :)

Not done yet, but we'll see. They've just ordered the parts.

Pro-tech down past Newbury, near Kingsclere. Only a small garage but they seem to know what they're doing, have good reviews, full STAR kit, and it was full of Mercs of all ages being worked on.

Oh i know the garage (not used them), i have family in Wash Common :)

Be interested to hear how that goes. Always good to know of a sensible mercedes shop like that. Shame its all the way down there though (i am up in West oxon near Witney).

Ah, yeah it's just on the cusp of being too far for me. Seems to be loads of Merc specialists down that way though, and over near Reading, and none up here.
Yep, i have used Star Motor Services in Caversham a fair bit in the past in Caversham, they always seemed very knowledgeable about my then S-Class and later SL500 at the time.

There is this place who seem pretty helpful up in Carterton - i am not sure where you but perhaps useful for you. They have STAR etc. https://www.oxfordgermancars.com/

I did send them an email at the same time I enquired with Pro-tech but they never replied or tried to ring me where as Pro-tech had my car in within a couple of days of sending. I'm South Oxon anyway, so Newbury is quite close down the windy B4494.

Be interested in how it goes. What were your symptoms btw?

Mostly getting stuck in 4th gear or going into limp mode (which is 3rd I think). Seemed to be triggered by temperature (the colder is was, the less it did it), switching between C/S/M modes, using the flappy paddles, and going faster.

So whilst I've had the car over winter commuting to work at no more than 50mph, it hasn't done it but now it's getting warmer and I've been using the A34 more and dropping down to 3rd to overtake, it's almost every other journey. Thankfully turning the car off and on again whilst stopped at lights solves it temporarily.

My car has the VGS2 model, so I don't need the new valve body at least.

Interesting :) Luckily i have not suffered any funny business with any of my autos (ive had a range of merc autos, a couple of 4G tronics, 5G tronics and 7G tronics, but its good to know that the box repairs are reasonable.
