What have you done to your car today?

Looks mint condition that. Approved!

Haha thanks... :p

I try my best to keep it reasonably presentable... Which is difficult... The fabric on the passenger side door card does bother me though, it has stretched somehow. I also need to re-stitch a bit of the steering wheel...

Plenty of opportunity to look around the interior on your way to 60MPH, so things get noticed.

That interior is in very good shape Acme, isn't it 2002 with fairly high mileage?
The interior of my sisters was obliterated and it was an '05 with 55k on the clock.

It is a 2002, quickly approaching 140,000 miles.

I have replaced some bits and pieces though. The centre dash & cupholder, the centre console including the cup holders, ashtray, gearstick knob and gaiter, the steering wheel has been re-trimmed (by myself, which is why it looks far from perfect!), one of the door handles is new, one of the seat slide handles, the pedal covers, mats, chrome dial rings, and heater dials.

I also vinyl wrapped the steering wheel spokes and door handles in silver, and the heater control trim has been sprayed silver.

I spent a little while with dash restoration wipes and sprays and foaming leather cleaner before I took that picture, but it hasn't been hoovered there, and the plastics haven't been wiped either, so it is actually a bit dirty still.

:)

Got oil and grease soaked clay in my hair, all up my arms, in my eyes, on the cat and in the kitchen.. but the old one is out!

What a stinking mess of a job that is!

Fair play it really does look like the effort has paid off, I never would have guessed it was knocking on 140k! It's nice to see a car like this actually get looked after as they often become neglected as they get older and the mileage goes up.

Good job. :)

Oh and great work with the steering wheel, I dread to think what it would look like if I tried that, well I can actually, bloody terrible! :p

What is with the rolleyes?

I love your car, honest guv! I'll remember to use smileys with you in the future :p

Beast :D

Car Friends?

Sorry, I'm used to people mocking the Polo so I thought your comment was entirely sarcastic. :p <3

Thankyou! :)

Just cleaned the plastics and hoovered it out, bit of foaming cleaner on the upholstery too (its still a bit damp in places) you can see what I mean about needing to re-stitch a bit of the steering wheel here too. One section between two of the spokes came partially unthreaded, so it has an adjustable cable tie round it to keep it together until I can be bothered to fix it properly. That bit used to look like this... :( http://i.imgur.com/r0dqC56.jpg?1

There are some other age related bits of the car which I can't really do anything about, like lacquer peel and scratches... It bothers me... :(

One particularly bad spot:

Washed the SLK55. Only do a few miles each week, so doesn't pick up anything more than dust :)

Then clayed, resin polished and HD waxed my other halfs TT. Looks even cleaner than when it came out of the showroom :D.

Have also been contemplating a suitable track car. Problem is, anything more powerful than the 55 is also a fair bit more expensive which kind of defeats the object of my track car hunt. Oh well, will keep looking.

That's a shame about the stitching coming undone and I hope you sort it out because I must say I am very impressed with the close up of what it looked like, very tidy job indeed. Where did you learn to do it?

Paint and body work is a pita as its so expensive to get done professionally and very difficult to do a half decent job a home. That was were my sisters 9N started to unravel, some **** keyed all the way down one side and she couldn't justify the cost to repair it so maintenance went out the window at that point.

Taa. Doing that steering wheel was the first time I'd ever picked up a needle and thread! I just watched a couple of quick Youtube tutorials the night before. :p

Yeah the bodywork on this one is completely trashed in places. It was like it when I bought it though... So at least I didn't do it.

It is a shame that its only worth £1000~ but I look forward to getting my next car, not only because of the usual reasons, but also because I'll be able to enjoy looking after it a bit more. :)

Acme that must be a proper poverty model. Look at the amount of switch blanks lol.

It is the absolute bottom of the line model. Lowest powered engine, no optional extras, steel wheels, wind up windows, two speakers, and a fan. :p (though I have since fitted a set of genuine Polo 9N alloys)

Left to right the blanking plates are: Passenger heated seat, tyre pressure monitoring, ESP, passenger airbag toggle, drivers heated seat.

That's is an amazing job for a first effort!:D

Its a good car to practice fixing things on so that will certainly help when you move on to the next car. What are you thinking about getting next?

Little things like that can be replace cheaply so no big issue there tbh

Washed, clayed, washed, dried, waxed the 350z. Took almost 3 hours:eek:

All that took 3 hours? That's too little time surely! :p

I haven't really decided yet... I've been considering hot superminis like the Polo 9N3 GTI and the Clio 197, and I've been considering hot hatches like the Focus ST225, MK4 Golf R32, and MK1 Mazda3 MPS. I do like the feel of a diesel engine under my foot as well though, but I can't deal with the noise... It just doesnt inspire me... Otherwise I'd be interested in a Polo PD130 + tuning as a wild card. :p

Only a few more pay-cheques to wait for before the test drives commence... I am incredibly excited because it has been a very long time coming... (as some people on these forums are painfully aware! :D)
