what headphones do you own thread - i own dt150's :)

While I've not heard any revision of the LCD-2s, it does seem to me that reported differences are being over-stated; as if Audeze utterly ruined a perfect headphone, and the Fazors are the conveniently obvious scapegoat. That's not to say they're not noticable, just that they're more marginal than you'd be expecting after perusing HeadFi etc.

One of the points I was trying to make was that maybe they've also changed some other aspects of construction which have altered the character but don't fall under a convenient name in the way that their Fazor tech does. This is a company that has a track record of silently revising their headphones, after all.

That some people prefer the Fazor'ed 2s suggests that character differences across revisions may not be as clear-cut as is frequently painted. I wouldn't want anyone to be put off from at least trying the latest LCD-2s due to the fact that written words - especially from passionate writers - have a tendency to make things appear more black-and-white than they actually are, that's all :)

Disclaimer: don't work for 'em, just a fan :D

As far as I can tell, the Fazors don't actually affect the FR in a noticeable way.

The sonic differences between the pre/post Fazor models are more likely due to a change in the design/manufacturing process of the drivers. I'm sure I read somewhere that this was largely due to Audeze wanting to reduce variation between drivers (a known issue on the pre fazor models, especially with the LCD-3). The LCD-2 and LCD-3 saw a noticeable rise in impedance and sensitivity, both of which aren't likely to be affected by the addition of the fazor elements, leading one to assume a driver change. I'm guessing some combination of diaphragm tension (remember the fiasco with driver failures due to being too highly tentioned?), and the magnet structure/strength.

The Fazor models also have noticeably more energy in the upper mid range and treble, more rolled off sub bass, and cleaner THD performance. The former is definitely noticeable, especially on vocal heavy songs, and is the reason for people saying things like the fazored models have more 'grain'. The other two factors are imo what is causing people to say that the post Fazor models sound more dry/less lush (I think you need a certain level of lower order harmonic distortion and sub bass response to give you a sense of body/lushness to the sound).

I agree that the differences might not be so black and white, but the newer models do certainly sound different.

Going to be starting work in London soon so a 1hr trip each morning on the train, can anyone recommend me some noise cancelling headphones/earphones, have no preference if one or the other will give me better isolation!

Done a bit of research and BOSE seem a good standard but there are alternatives that people recommend but just looking for some real world views on here.

Thanks

BOSE is the worst choice you could make. People who buy BOSE are the same type of people that think price tag and brand name mean everything when they don't.

Stick to sennheiser, beryerdynamic, akg or shure and you cannot really go wrong.

For a train I would go with sennheiser momentums or urbanite if your after the whole beats by dre thing.

BOSE probably block out external noise well... but so do ear plugs. (Probably shouldn't be dissing them as I'm supposed to be selling BOSE but end of the day I'm a Sennheiser fanboy and not without good reason).

Now I've worked out the whole 3/4 pole thing with the Momentums I'd quite recommend them - they stay on the head pretty well, sound quality is excellent and the sound stage while intimate has a great 3D/binaural quality to it.

They aren't perfect for isolation (from others) but do contain the sound well, they do need careful adjustment for comfort however - there is literally like 1mm between reasonably comfortable and totally uncomfortable :S

The whole 3/4 pole connection caught me out which I've never had such issue before - the 4 pole jack into a 3 pole device doesn't make a proper connection with a lot of devices resulting in degradation of the sound quality and leakage between channels so only use the 4 pole lead if you have a device designed for 4 pole otherwise use the 3 pole. (Can tell from reading the reviews on them that it caught a good few other people out as well including some proper reviewers).

That whole four pole problem is why I am trying to avoid them when I buy IEMs. So far three of my four pairs are three pole but some insist on including remotes and mics that I never use.

I've not had a problem with it before (that I've noticed) but the Momentum's 4 pole jack seems to not fit quite right with most of my every day equipment. They do come with a choice of 3 or 4 pole leads but IIRC the 4 pole one comes already attached and is the aesthetically better looking one heh.

The Rock Jaw Alfa Genus comes with a 4 pole and when I plugged them into my extension cable which sits on my desktop I lost all of the mids. They sounded as though I was using some sort of extreme karaoke filter, all bass and treble. It didn't help that they had just arrived so I thought they were broken :D

Bose are excellent headphones for commuting (if noise cancelling is your priority).

I sent the HD650 back the other day as I get fed up. This was the second pair I received that sounded colder, not warm. I thought man I gotta try these one more time. Pair arrived today and to my surprise! warm, lush and absolutely beautiful!

This is the HD650 I remember! I'm not sure what happened with the others..driver variation maybe? But Senns have been pretty consistent.

I missed this sound so much!

There was a blip in 2009 when they changed some of the materials IIRC but all the current ones should sound the same.

EDIT: Depending where you bought them from some places that don't shift them that fast might still be holding older stock.

It will have to go down as one of life's great mysteries.

Some have said that it was a bad batch but Sennheiser's QA department should have picked that up. It could be due to Sennheiser making changes to the drivers and your new ones could just be one of the ones using the old ones, who knows? And Sennheiser sure as **** ain't telling :D

^^ I wonder if some 600s slipped out in the 650's aesthetics/badging as the description of the sound difference matches the 600s more or less (not sure if thats actually possible even though they are very similar).

I put the 650 cable on my 600s even heh.

Interesting. The previous ones sounded like the HD600 but with a less rough upper end. The mid bass hump wasn't prominent at all and the sub bass was slightly more extended to my ears(The lack of mid bass hump may have gave that impression) My pair now has a hazy sound, the haze creeps into the lower mids. Treble is refined, smooth.

I searched on headfi also and many people were saying their pair sounded brighter and some said they sound the same. Maybe some differently tuned batches made it out.

Focal spirit professional.

They sound great again, bass i mean woah.

Just got them today, these i think are headphones you need to explore that is all.

Talk about excellent sq.

They ain't ultra popular but i really do understand why you would love the sound of both.

I really would recommend these after about 15 + headphone purchases.

Just excellent sq :-).

Bass is good i mean listen to some bass boosted (sub bass) song on a high volume.

Sub Bass thumps as it should.

I have the HD700s with the Lyr2 and modi 2 uber. Lovely sound, the lyr2 smooths out the treble spike, not a lot, but enough for me to really enjoy them.

Would really love some HD800s but they are currently over double the price of the hd700s...which is just crazy!
