While I've not heard any revision of the LCD-2s, it does seem to me that reported differences are being over-stated; as if Audeze utterly ruined a perfect headphone, and the Fazors are the conveniently obvious scapegoat. That's not to say they're not noticable, just that they're more marginal than you'd be expecting after perusing HeadFi etc.
One of the points I was trying to make was that maybe they've also changed some other aspects of construction which have altered the character but don't fall under a convenient name in the way that their Fazor tech does. This is a company that has a track record of silently revising their headphones, after all.
That some people prefer the Fazor'ed 2s suggests that character differences across revisions may not be as clear-cut as is frequently painted. I wouldn't want anyone to be put off from at least trying the latest LCD-2s due to the fact that written words - especially from passionate writers - have a tendency to make things appear more black-and-white than they actually are, that's all
Disclaimer: don't work for 'em, just a fan
As far as I can tell, the Fazors don't actually affect the FR in a noticeable way.
The sonic differences between the pre/post Fazor models are more likely due to a change in the design/manufacturing process of the drivers. I'm sure I read somewhere that this was largely due to Audeze wanting to reduce variation between drivers (a known issue on the pre fazor models, especially with the LCD-3). The LCD-2 and LCD-3 saw a noticeable rise in impedance and sensitivity, both of which aren't likely to be affected by the addition of the fazor elements, leading one to assume a driver change. I'm guessing some combination of diaphragm tension (remember the fiasco with driver failures due to being too highly tentioned?), and the magnet structure/strength.
The Fazor models also have noticeably more energy in the upper mid range and treble, more rolled off sub bass, and cleaner THD performance. The former is definitely noticeable, especially on vocal heavy songs, and is the reason for people saying things like the fazored models have more 'grain'. The other two factors are imo what is causing people to say that the post Fazor models sound more dry/less lush (I think you need a certain level of lower order harmonic distortion and sub bass response to give you a sense of body/lushness to the sound).
I agree that the differences might not be so black and white, but the newer models do certainly sound different.
