what headphones do you own thread - i own dt150's :)

Not sure about modding them just yet! After a few hours with them I do wish I had bought a pair back in 2009? Been missing out!

I wrote some more stuff here: https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/3l775u/first_new_toy_since_moving_back_to_the_us/

This is still early days yet but I wouldn't say my impressions of it have really changed all that much.

If you're interested in it, I would highly recommend demoing before purchase.

I'll prob pop down my local(well..about 15 miles away)when I've got spare time.

So basically they are an X2 with a rolled off treble and a lack of mid range presence? A modded HD800 is awesome, reminded me of the Annie in tone when I heard it. HD800 stock is dry and not very gripping for my music. Facking awesome for gaming though!

So I'm listening to the Audioquest Nighthawk now and have been for about 60 mins and I really like them. They are dark, lush and quite resolving. The sub bass goes quite deep, I would say similar to my old HE-500 in extension.

The guy gave me a pair of HD650 to compare to as it's hard going by memory sometimes.
The HD650 are more linear through to the treble but the bass drops off before the NH. The Nighthawk is odd it isn't really V shaped but it's so boomy with the mid-bass that it is the dominant aspect to it's sound. The treble is dark, really dark and the upper mids are clearly dipped to my ears. The lower mids on both are similar, the NH sounds a little dreamier, like it's trying to lull you to sleep. I really like this effect but the upper mids sound a little out of place; could I live with this? You know what, I could. The sub bass makes up for some ground but when I switch back the HD650 is clearly the more technical performer in the mids. The Nighthawk also reminds me of a more open Z7 which isn't a bad thing. The HD650 is brighter than the NH but it it I really really like it. It's perfect for me in tone, gooey and romantic.

A bit more in and I've come to the conclusion that these are not short demo headphones, these need time to appreciate. When you go back to the NH from the HD650 they can almost sound like the mix is suffocating. When you listen it's like the suffocating lull drags you in and you hear everything. It's so unique almost Audeze X HD650 X Z7 but even warmer. This experience is unique to me as I've not experienced a headphone like it.

I'm about to wrap up and I can tell you I'll prob buy one. The mids are not as linear or as emotional as the HD650 at first glance but in time they drag you in. I would say both are in the same league but just different.

That upper mid range dip is really starting to become noticeable (and not that pleasant to my ears) now that I've got the rest of my collection with me. I think I'll have to investigate some mods to see if this can be fixed (there are also rumors that AQ might be releasing alternative ear pads).

Still these have been my go to for gaming at the moment, even more comfortable than my HD 800, and dat bass is noice.

I think they are a complementary set off phones for serious listeners. They will make a great night time set of phones. I'm a one open and one portable kind of guy so it would be tough between them and the HD650. The HD650 had more complete sounding mids but what I like about the Nighthawk is it had sub bass but it also traded that and a gob of mid bass for some upper mids and a darker upper end.

The Nighthawk and HD650 sounded beautiful with this track but the HD650 clearly had something extra while the NH sounded more romantic.

This song sounded more recessed with the NH and a little duller but still was fairly musical. The HD650 sounds snappier and more realistic.

I also had the LCD-3 next to me so I just threw them on at the end and thought all 3 sounded similar. The LCD-3 had the fazor I believe as it sounded like it didn't have much bass extension below 50 or so. It was the the least favoured out of the three. Bass was so good on the NH It almost seemed pre fazor like at times but the bloom from the mid-bass can get a bit distracting but I was impressed when I played more bass focused songs.

I wouldn't have guessed they'd make good gaming headphones but I'd love to try them! I might just grab a pair from amazon and give them a whirl for a month and see how I get on. I do love how efficient they are.

I just got my Shure SE846 IEM. Haven't had a chance to try the different filters yet, but I can already hear the better bass than on my SE535 using the default neutral filter. I wasn't expecting a huge upgrade from my SE535s but so far I am impressed.

Quick update on the Nighthawks.

I did some basic modding today (replaced the pads and stuffed some polyfill behind the driver) and I got a positive improvement (for my tastes at least).

Overall bass quantity has been reduced so it doesn't sound as thick/bloated compared to stock. Highly recommended.

I'm looking to upgrade from the Oppo PM-1's as they're causing me a bit of pain under my right ear that I can't seem to resolve.

I'm after something that has sufficient bass punch like the PM-1's but still very pure - was thinking perhaps LCD-X or LCD-2 but am open to suggestions :)

The current LCD-2 is quite dry and grainy with a rough upper end. The PM-1 reminded me of a well driven HD650 with better extension down low so it's not going to be easy finding something similar. The Nighthawk is even warmer and smoother than the Oppo so they may be worth a look of you don't mind going dynamic. If not then a pair of pre fazor LCD-2 or 3's.

I would take a look at some of Zach's offerings like the ZMF Omni (lot's of good feedback on Changstar/HF/reddit) a T50RP mod.

Also there might be some up and coming models to interest you like the HiFiMan Edition-X (a cross between HE-560/HE-1000), MrSpeakers Ether Closed (meant to be a bassier version of the Ether), and the Enigma Acoustics Dharma (hybrid dynamic/electrostatic).

Or just get the HD 800, mod it, and be done with upgrades for a while ;)

Just added a pair of bose QC25's to my growing collection. Just fancied something a bit nicer for travelling and as in Canada got a good price for them.

After trying on some HD700's I can see myself getting a pair in the next 12 months.

Picked up a Sony MDR-Z7 again the other day. Got it with a Kimber Kable for under basically under £300! bargain! I've owned this headphone before and it's good but I felt it was overpriced(Paid £400 before) but for £300 it's a good headphone. The Kimber Kable sounds a little cleaner and smoother but it's probably a 1% difference but I'll switch back in a week or so to see if there's a difference.

The Mid bass isn't as hefty as I remembered but that's prob because I'm used to the NH. It's certainly a very bassy headphone but I think it's mids have enough clarity to make this decent. It's not really lush like the NH, the mids sound like the 1R with more depth to voices.

I've been spoilt with some headphones that do vocals really well and the Z7 is close but not quite as soulful as some of them. It does vocals better than the other closed phones I've had apart from the Mad Dog 3.0 which was basically a closed HD650 or at least the nearest thing to one.

Knowing I paid £300, I'm happy with them, been using them for gaming and movies and and while they sound more closed than I like for gaming, it does sub bass better than my AKG's and is overall a more refined headphone. The imaging is really good as it's deep, and accurate.

I've also had the Sennheiser G4ME Zero for a while, mic is quality but the build quality is rubbish, hate the feel of the 500 series. I'm not sure which model it is based on, think it's the HD558 as the GZ sounds warm where the HD598 has some warmth but is quite geared towards clarity.

The GZ sounds decent, soundstage feels about medium sized for an open headphone. It images ok. lack of ultra low bass but has good mid bass punch like most Senn's.

I would like AKG to come out with gaming headphone that has lower impedance. I can't be bothered with all the mod mic stuff and a lot of my gear is now for practical use.

Got the AKG K612 Pro from my GF for my birthday yesterday and coming from my AKG K240's I'm loving the upgrade, the K240's sound messy and muddy compared to the K612's, bass is much tighter, and more impactful, although these aren't exactly sub bass monsters they definitely aren't 'bass light' either, imo they give you just the right amount and I listen to a lot of deep house.

Soundstage is very well balanced being almost perfectly spherical rather than elliptical, everything feels in the right place especially the center stage for vocals, being AKG it does sound airy but not so much so that it makes the music seem distant.

Have you tried modding your Z7's at all?

I've got parts for my measurement kit I'm building (very basic) and I'm planning on probably adding some damping material into the housing since they don't have any at all to try and fix the boomy bass.

I should also probably post my impressions of the Z7 here...

I'll consider it but I kind of like the boom as I hear the mids as a bit lean so I kind of picture them sounded a bit too lean without the bass. If that isn't the case then I'll look into it. Yeah post your impressions here :)

I've seen some measurements online that have a peak around 8 which is what I must be hearing. If the mods can tone that down then I'm sure they would sound a bit more fluid.

As much as I'm enjoying my DT770s I'm tempted to get some Hifiman HE400i but struggling to find them for a decent price atm.
