Heh, I knew you'd do something like this, going by your Motors posts :D :)

It's actually a sensible move, given that the main reason for replacement is comfort. This was why I didn't leap in to recommend Audezes - as much as I love them, they're heavy buggers and have more of a sturdy industrial feel than the luxury feel the Oppos seem to give off.

Keep us updated!

AKG K500 - excellent with classical esp. Chamber music, string quartets etc.
Audio Technica ATH-ESW9 (currently broken) - excellent fun portable phones.
Denon D1001 (also broken) - decent phones for their price point, but nothing WOW

Need a new pair of portables but might just end up getting the ATs repaired unless there's anything better out there, love those headphones

Currently own a pair of sennheiser hd 598's. only problem i have with them is it leaves my head deformed (as in a dent in my head which looks funny) does anyone know a solution to this?

reduce the clamping force...

Extend the headband to the max and CAREFULLY bend the exposed metal outwards slightly but only hold the metal, never the plastic (it will break). Do that on both sides and the clamping force should be less likely to squash your head. :D

3 sets right now

Sennheiser Momentum over ear
V Moda Crossfade LP
Audio Technica ATH-ADG1

For me I have everything between these 3 sets, Thumping Base from the V-Moda, A rich but balanced sound from the Sennheiser, and a beautiful open sound-stage from the Audio Technica's

Any of you guys owned or still own Mr Speakers Alphas?

In the past. They are a nice set. I wouldn't say they are worth the price with the import fees but if you can grab a set from somewhere in the UK for £300 or so then go for it.

I personally still couldn't live with the fact they are essentially a T50RP at 5 times the price.

Been experimenting with the HD650 on different gear. It's amazing how this headphone scales and adapts. I thought I could put the HD650 to bed owning the NH, another really nice headphone but it kind of reaches it's potential early where as the HD650 just keeps showing ways to improve. This headphone is remarkable.

Just bought the Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro 250 Ohm Headphones - Black Limited Edition which will be powered off of my Asus Maximus VII Formula until I get around to buying the Aune T1 MK2 Tube AMP/DAC :)

I have DT770 pro 80ohm for gaming (+Xonar U7), though for listening to music I use Audeze LCD2.2 (+Chord Mojo).

The Beyers are great for gaming, but for music they aren't a patch on the Audeze - though some find them a little heavy.

I thought I'd post a brief update, with a longer review of all the headphones when time permits.

So after living with the HE1000's, LCD2, LCD3, HD800, T1's and the PM1's, I've decided to go with the HD800's with a Moon Audio Black Dragon cable.

I really enjoy the darker sound from the planars but after the PM1's causing me pain, I had to rethink slightly. In all honesty, the headphone that disappointed me the most - the HE1000's. They were good, just not as good as I'd expected, especially for $3000, they certainly don't "redefine" the industry as everyone thought they might. They were a nice balance though between the HD800 and LCD's, just lacking something to me.

In terms of sound, I did prefer the LCD's to the HD800 as I prefer a slightly darker sound, which the LCD's are renowned for. They were heavy, much heavier than my Oppo's and I had a feeling that was going to cause me issues down the line.

In the end, I love the soundstage from the HD800's, but was let down by the lack of punch from the low end. This is something I've been able to resolve with the Moon Audio cable, which honestly has given me exactly what I wanted, though it makes the HD800's far more expensive! I did however get a cracking deal on the HD800's from Germany, ended up being $600 off retail which basically paid for the cable.

Unless the HD800 cable was high resistance, I can't imagine the cable making that much of a notable difference. Placebo perhaps?

The Fidelio X1 had a marked improvement by changing cable, the cable had over 1ohms of resistance though, so you'd expect a gain. Have you measured the HD800 cable? Phillips fixed the cable issue with the X2, for reference. So obviously they were aware of this "Bug".
