They are ZMF Omni's with zebra wood cups.

Some impressions here: LINK

@Ryanr1987 - I have the feeling you'd probably like these a lot. They're kinda like a warmer sounding LCD-2 pre-fazor. Very nice indeed.

They look sexy! Hopefully can try a pair. Zack has seen to of mastered T50RP mods!

Recently picked up a set of K712s. Is it just me or does classical and film scores sound absolutely fantastic on these? Sense of space is really quite something. However, it really highlights poor recordings.

I really need to stop buying headphones though now...

HD650s
K712 Pros
HD598SE
DT770 Pro 80Ohm

Edit: Forgot about my TV/HT headphones- Sony MDR-HW700DS

712 is same/similar config to the K7XX no? Indeed I found the same. I've now removed the inner foam rings behind the ear pads and have been enjoying an improved sound. Mostly the mids and soundstage.

I really want to hear the HD800 though, tempted to buy them through Amazon just to get a taste, and if they don't wow me just return them no questions asked. Nobody near me has them for demo.

Just make sure you give plenty of time for them to settle, burn-in or whatever you choose to call it. I just bought a second pair myself and my old one which I bought back in 2010, sounds slightly louder, more articulate and just more 'alive'. I've not done proper blind testing, but it's pretty obvious just switching back and forth between them.

I think the difference in sound is mainly down to the pads wearing in and the headband loosening. The pads on my old one are way softer and just fit around my ears with a perfect seal, where as the new ones are very rigid and sit unevenly around my ears. Some pics of the old and new 650s.

Bear in mind, I just washed and tumble dried the pads on the old one the other day, so they are less flat than normal. It makes a significant difference to the sound, and the main cause of 'burn-in' in my opinion. After several hours of use, the new ones are already sounding pretty much identical to the old ones. Actually, they seem to sound a little tighter in the bass region, but that could just be in my head. Main thing is that you give your brain time to adjust. I personally liked the sound immediately when I first got them back in 2010, but the sound did gradually improve over time.

It's a shame the pads are not memory foam like on the AKG. No need to let them settle ion over time, once warmed up, they shape themselves.

It's gonna be one thing I miss for sure if the 650s are impressive over the K7XX. I won't miss the creaking every time I move my head though lol.

I'll take a listen when back from the in-laws. If I'm honest I got them mainly for listening to Jeff Waynes war of the world's. But some of the binaural recordings on YouTube are great, if only the recorded films that way as a headphone track

Vs the AKG K7XX (modded):

Duke Ellington - Villes Ville Is The Place, Man (FLAC 24bit 88kHz from SACD).
Immediately obvious is that string instruments and symbols are warmer, more forward and with more definition. Stereo imaging not as wide feeling as the K7XX and the bass not as low down either. I'd say the HD650 sounds the most natural of the two with this track. Before I'd heard the 650 I thought the K7XX sounded very natural with this track

Shy Girls - Arrest Me (ft. Tei Shi) (MP3 320k iTunes encode).
When Tei Shi's vocals come in the texture of her voice is more musky. Hard to choose a winner here. The K7XX with wider soundstage makes this track very enjoyable, but the detail and texture of the HD650 feels more natural and live.

Build quality is a league above the AKGs, but the little HD650 emblem area of each can looks and feels cheap/tacky. This should have been metal IMO not some cheap looking piece of plastic.

The pads are smaller than the AKG, the foam rests on my outer ear whereas the AKG has a nice round margin. I'll get used to it...

I can see what people say when they mention the 600/650 being dark/darker still.

Think I'll be keeping these.

One thing is clear, the 650s are less forgiving to poor masterings/encodes compared to the K7XX. Shorter cable to be ordered too.

The AKG has too many plastic bits that screw together and flex resulting in creaking/cheap feel. Supposedly the Austrian built ones are better, but some owners of those say they aren't that much better either. The HD650 plastic is thicker, feels better. The HD598 plastics are not as good feeling as the AKG though, but the HD598 never creaked!

If either Sennheiser or AKG made a headphone with the same materials Phillips did with the X1/X2 then it would simply be game over.

With the HD650, Sennheiser use metal in the right places. The earcups are completely metal and so is the headband (as you'd expect). I've used mine quite heavily for the last 5 years and the only issue I've experienced is some of the grey gloss paint peeling off, mainly around the headband where it expands and contracts.

Would be so cool if they replaced the headband plastic with a leather wrap (with the sennheiser logo embossed into it) and the arms with metal. As you say, it would be game over at that point. :p

We can only dream :p

Anyone know of a good 2 headphone stand? I'm gonna keep hold of the XX for games and movies. The 650 will be my music and critical listening headphones
