what headphones do you own thread - i own dt150's :)

I'm seriously tempted by the HD650 but I'm not convinced it'll be that much of an upgrade over my HP200s.

They're probably are a bit better but not £230 better...

Well that is the whole argument of diminishing returns! I paid I think £120 for the HP200 and sold them for £100. They are very good for the money.

Diminishing returns is not going to come into play with entry level headphones like the HP200 and something like the HD650 and LCD-2.

what do you like about the he400i's?

i had he400's (the older version) and honestly didn't rate them at all.

There is a newer version which is reportedly and improvement on the old one but I don't know when the change happened. However from pics I have the newer version.

I like the clarity of the music reproduction and the bass is nicer than the X1's it's Fast and punchy but not boomy.

Vocals are nice and clear well presented, soundstage could be better but for a casual easy listening headphone the 400i is a solid option but compared to say the hd650 it is a bit pricey. It isn't too bright nor too bassy very neutral i suppose would be the correct assessment.

Perhaps I'm lacking in experience but I don't hear the sibilance some people complain about.

They vary between units. I think they are more consistent now but I've never heard a 400i that sounded like mine. Mine was rolled off, lush in the mids, good vocal depth and nice bass impact and extension. The last one I heard with the new connectors had better bass extension, a bit leaner and brighter up top but I didn't really hear bad sibilance just a little roughness.

Of course they can be. How do you measure double the quality of the audio when they are double the price? Are they doubly better or just a bit better? If they are a bit better it is a diminishing return as you gain a bit more for double the cost. It is all about value, unless money is no object.

HP200 = £120. LCD-2 = £800. Are they 6.6 times better and how would you even measure it? Plus the addition of a decent source which you need. it is all subjective but they are no way 6.6 times better.

Well the HP200 is in the same league as the Brainwavz HM5 when it comes to how resolving it is. Resolution, micro detail, tonal balance are the main differences you will notice between a higher end headphone and a mid range and below headphone.

The gap between £250 - £800 is very small only because of the HD650 which is the only headphone that has hifi performance in the key areas in that price range, yes there's some good performances like the k712 + 400i but there's a big difference when jumping to the 650 when it comes to technical performance.

If the 650 competes with an LCD-2 and it's only £250 while the HP200 is competing with low tier headphones like the M50X, HM5, HP100 etc then show me how diminishing returns fits in here? it doesn't. HD650 - LCD-2 yes it does, maybe even the K712 because the gap in price/performance does close. But when you look at the Hifiman HEK which is £1300 the LCD-2 seems like a bargain so the difference between the HP200 and LCD-2 is absolutely massive because the jump in all the thing I mentioned is very big.

i would say if he 400i came down in price to around 200-250 they would be a go to contender for many, but at 350 they are just the wrong side of 300 to compete with the 650 and 712 which is where they are placed by most.

Need to get my hands on some 650's at some point to truly A/B them all in good time :)

I think the 400i is priced pretty decent but it's just the HD650 is stupidly low in price. If the 650 didn't exist the K712 and HE-400i could both be priced in the £300-400 bracket and lead it, more so the 400i.

well yes there is that the rrp of the 650 is 399.99 with a distribution (direct) buy price of around £250 but Amazon are buying grey and exploiting currency conversions, We and other vendors can't do that due to ramifications of our own distribution agreements and unlike amazon the volume we sell doesn't outweigh the stress it may cause.

Amazon sold the hyper X clouds for 39.99 2 weeks before black friday they sold 1500 units in a day. Sennheiser can't afford to try to control amazon even if it's to the detriment of smaller resellers relationships with sennheiser.

They've done the same with the Focals Classics which were meant to be £350-400 but Amazon where letting them go for £250. Pretty cheeky and ****ed a lot of dealers off.

Just received the Denon D2000 and all I can say for 130 they blow chunks all over the DT770 I had for a day or two before returning them .

They are very smooth sounding and exciting !!! They work better with my Oppo HA-2

Do you think I'm mad returning the HD650 now ? I'm actually enjoying Tango in the night more on the Denons, I bought the Denons for work and the HD 650 for home and gaming but I'm not sure I can justify having both just now ...

Not sure I'm imagining it but there seems to be more detail in the D2000

Moonage Daydream for example I can here more going on in the acoustic guitar ... I'm defo loving the sound signature of these Denons !!
