What is a good salary in UK at present?

I thought I said Pakistan? Bit racist to imply they're all the same....

I didn’t imply that, you are right though you did say Pakistan. So, how is saying you don’t need to visit Pakistan because you’ve been to Birmingham a criticism of the city itself rather than the people?

This is what I mentioned earlier. We are richer through career progression not proper wage increases.

The missus and I were on 80k combined adjusted for inflation back in 2008. She was a machine operative and I was a team leader in a factory at 21 years old. Simple working class jobs 9-5. That was a 45-48 hour week as well. Weekends off, time and quarter after 35 hours and time and half after 48, up to 13 weeks full sick pay depending on time served, final salary pension (What a noob I was not to start paying into that).

All that stuff basically doesn't exist now at the company I started working at. Just a flat miserable rate and they do not even pay for breaks so some people are basically working below minimum wage but it is legal.

You cannot blame that all on government as it is just pure greed.

To be at the same level as were then you need to be an area manager in charge of 50+ people, be HR, be Payroll because the whole lot has been streamlined with computers so not only are you doing your original job of ten years ago but you are also doing the job of two others!
This is pretty much a carbon copy of the factory I spent 20 years working at. Good salary, 4x12 hour shifts Mon-Thurs with as much well paid overtime as you wanted, final salary pension etc etc. As you say, those well paying sort of jobs don't seem to exist any more.

Because you’re stuck in Switzerland?

Yes it's awful being next to France with the pretty girls and amazing food, Germany with their great beer (and girls...), Austria....okay that's a bit dull, Italy with it's pizza...and girls.

Oh and all the distinct areas of Switzerland.

Everything within a couple hours drive. How Stück. :(

Switzerland. Something, something supporting the Asian and South American drug trade since 1960.

Switzerland. A recession away from being a nation of smack heads.

Visit Switzerland. We really need your tourism to pay for our blow, German beer, Italian pizza and French hookers.

Come to Switzerland and hook up with a Swiss girl. You to can enjoy HIV and hepatitis and marvel at her track marks.

Yes you're right, the CHF is going to crash and we'll just be stuck with our smack...

And yes we like tourists to visit, just like they enjoy being in our country. Less chance of negative experiences unlike some other places... What we do with the money is our business, after all we like the secrecy. ;)

And as for your comment on Swiss girls, in your dreams haha.

Do the Swiss still operate those erm special parks?

I love how quickly it all degrades into cliché stereotypes.
No winners here, all looosers.

Here's something for you all to consider. I lost a decent job 6 months ago and I'm now on U/C (temporarily hopefully). I'm managing just fine for now on £9k p/a with a roof over my head, bills paid, food in the fridge, and I own a basic 72 plate car that's fully legal and insured. I'll admit I've had some help from family to get to this point but I just want to point out that we can all manage on much less money if we really make an effort to sacrifice, budget, and focus on the basics.

it is true i think it is very easy to lose sight of what really are essentials and what are luxuries (and what is just wasting money).

That said fingers crossed you get a new job soon......

Saying Switzerland is very tolerant toward everyone is some major cope. I’ve worked there numerous times travelling with a multicultured group and the Indian guy with us had a hellish time with the looks and abuse he was getting.

British black guy here :)

Originally born and raised in the Birmingham area. I have been living in Switzerland since 2019. I have never had this problem while living here. Hasn't effected me dating Swiss and non-Swiss women either while here but that would be going off topic. :D

Be very interesting to hear why the Indian guy was looks and abuse. Lets not pretend this doesn't happen in the UK also even in 2023. Just take a trip the parts of Devon!

So many strikes happening or happened. Economy all over the shop.

Take out variables such as sector, experience etc.

If you had to quote a good salary in current UK what is it and why?
£123,841.74p (NET) :)

As a single person I would say 50k to be extremely comfortable Midlands and North. (House ownership, holidays and hobbies)

There are massive variables though. I knew of people who earnt far more than we do as a couple but blew it all on takeaway, pubs etc and have very little. Massive mortgage and a smaller house and not even kids. (We have 2). They must have been on circa 90K combined before tax which is a huge wage for the east midlands. Living in a 3 bed semi.

This seems to answer the OP's question though.

You put all your bits in and it works it all out.

We are in the top 35% (I sure as hell don't feel like it) but if I were to sell off my kids we would be in top 12% which just seems mad and explains why a lot choose not to have kids.

Back in 2007 before we had kids and wages adjusted for inflation we were working in a factory in junior leadership roles fresh out of school that anyone could do. With overtime we had a combined salary adjusted for inflation of 80+K between us. I think that paints a massive picture in itself compared to now.

East Midlands is similar in cost to here. And yeah. 90 split between 2 is great with no kids and a "modest" mortgage.
With kids I expect it comes closer to 'good' and even 'average'.

This is us. 85k and no kids in same area and it's no worries. But we aren't driving a pcp car. (spend the equivalent on holidays.. Each to thier own).

But yes. That wage is definitely a good wage. It would be distasteful to say it isn't. Only way it isn't is if we were severely overstretched with mortgage, loans, etc etc

Or deepest rural Suffolk. Where I grew up basically everyone was white.

That is kind of my point though we were earning that kind of money 15 years ago in simple working class jobs. I don't know what you do but I am sure it is of more responsibility than clocking in running machinery for hours then clocking out and going home.

We used to be on par with German only 10 years ago now we are 10-15k behind them and risk falling into the realms of Spain and Italy. When you add that we have the worst wealth inequality in western Europe we most likely already are.

The problem is when the pound is worth nothing as a wage it is going to make going abroad a lot more difficult too as our wages will be useless outside of the UK.

I guess the seaside towns will see a mini resurgence in this case.

Yes. It's the limit of not too difficult vs responsibility.
Only way to get significantly more money without being "senior" is to go contracting.

So this will likely be my ceiling in a perm job. No where else to go without the burdens that come with more.

It’s funny how much housing cost input skews the result…

If you’re on a peanuts sub-£1k per month boomer mortgage, live in the sticks or are fully paid off, then of course you’re going to have oodles of cash to spare.
