We shouldn't respect any historic figures who dealt in the slave trade
We should respect them in context of the time and place they lived in.
We shouldn't respect any historic figures who dealt in the slave trade
Edward Colston, the statue toppled and chucked in the river, was a prominent slave trader. Seems fairly legit he should not be celebrated.
As far as I know Mercedes no longer use slaves or have anything to do with slaves and I expect they dont celebrate the fact they used slaves.
Just a weak comparison.
No the difference is that Lewis hamilton is preaching to us all, yet he drives for and takes a paycheck from mercedes without ever mentioning their past.

And that's a really crap reason. There are entire family lines who exist purely because the NAZIs raped and pillaged. You want to go after them too?
We shouldn't respect any historic figures who dealt in the slave trade, I agree with that. It's shameful. But, we also shouldn't go after people who had nothing at all to do with the actions taken by their relatives generations ago. And there's even less logic in going after a company for those reasons.
WHAT?!
WHAT???

Will you be demanding any reference to Mohammed is removed from Islam?

How can we judge historical figures based on modern standards?
Are you aware of any statues to Muhammad in the UK?Muhammad, prophet of Islam, led a campaign of enslavement across the Middle East, yet he is celebrated and revered.

He was also an exceptional philanthropist.

Try erecting one, just let me be there when you do.Are you aware of any statues to Muhammad in the UK?
I wasn't referring to any statues of Muhammad, I commented on the fact that he is celebrated and revered despite profiting very handsomely from slavery. Are you aware of any statues to Muhammad in the UK?
I can't say that I am a fan of ANY religious belief; I am definitely not in favour of anyone enforcing their beliefs on others.I wasn't referring to any statues of Muhammad, I commented on the fact that he is celebrated and revered despite profiting very handsomely from slavery.
I remember some cartoons of Muhammad that were published - that didn't go down too well.
I know - the thought of celebrating someone who literally profited from slavery is pretty appalling isn't it?How can anybody keep a straight face suggesting a person who literally profited on human misery was somehow a philanthropist?

"But it was different back then...."....
