What is your best photo you have taken in 2013 and why?

Just like how a lamp shade works if you plug in one right there in where they are standing. Think….there is a light bulb inside the lamp shade.

Now substitute the lamp shade with the umbrella and the light bulb with a flash, and BAM! Bob's your uncle.

Remote trigger, camera on tripod to keep the low ISO with just long enough shutter speed to get the ambient light that I want. I did take one hand held before hand. It's actually very easy to do on paper.

I think I shot it in Manual, but ETTL.

:)

^^ I thought that (honest) when i first saw it, but....anyways, nicely done :)

ps. So you used remote triggers to fire the flash, i wonder if it would work from the on camera flash...probably not, to much light ?!?

If your trigger isn't a source of light it should look similar. You want to light the subject by the flash under the umbrella.

It's a tough choice. I think my photography has improved over the past year and I haven't been through all my photos from a month-long trip through Georgia and Turkey yet.

I'll go for this:

Caption: Yawning fox in the snow

Reason: It wasn't even my favourite shot of foxes from that day at first but I had a fair bit of positive feedback about it so entered it into the "Animal Kingdom" round of Amateur Photographer of the Year (APOY), which usefully had just been announced. I finished 13th! Most success I've had with photography has come as a result of bad luck and this was no different - I'd walked through thigh-deep snow drifts and muddy fields in inappropriate footwear to get here so was soaked and cold by 9:30am. If that wasn't bad enough, after I took the above shot I dropped my camera in a lake. Without a thought I jumped into the lake to rescue it. If I wasn't already cold enough! 20 minutes later I slipped over and caked myself in mud from head to toe. I didn't have a change of clothes or shoes so went to a gig that night still cold and wet. I wasn't sure if the photo was worth it at the time as I lost £200 on my camera but the competition result gave me the incentive to enter some more and later in the year I won £1000 worth of camera equipment in APOY!

The photo wasn't good enough to be shortlisted for the British Wildlife Centre photography competition which is a shame as first prize is a day shooting there with the head keeper. I'd love to go back (and recommend it to anyone who wants to get close to animals).

2013 was a pretty quiet year for me also, took a few nice shots but nothing that's blown me away. Think this is one of the better ones:

Hayling Island bridge

I was working down south and took my NEX-5R along for something to do in the evenings. Didn't take much when out for a walk but on the way back the light was right and got this one.
