What is your scariest/jumpiest game of all time

As others have mentioned - Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. It's only a couple of levels that are particularly scary but they own everything else I've played for fear factor.

Aside from sometimes being scary, it's one of the most genuinely emotionally involving games I've played. The script, voice acting and character animation are all brilliantly done, resulting in some of the most engaging characters and situations I've come across in a game. While playing I can remember feeling sympathy, disgust and remorse, finding moments genuinely funny, even feeling a sense of fondness for certain characters.

The environments look a little dated now, but the characters are as good as anything else out there. The designers made great use of the Source Engine's facial animation system. Characters in many other games look positively wooden by comparison. It's almost like playing with actors rather than NPCs at times.

I'm surprised Thief: Deadly Shadows hasn't had a mention yet: http://gillen.cream.org/thecradle.pdf

Edit: I don't get how Ravenholm was supposed to be scary.

The Gonarch's Lair level in Half Life. That four legged thing just made my skin crawl, I really hated that section. :o

Anyone can be frightened of things just suddenly appearing on screen, but it takes a certain skill to creep the player out. That's why I'm glad most of the really unsettling games are FPS based, as I don't play 'em anymore. ;)

Silent Hill...because the atmosphere and the whole radio crackling and horn thing, I remember playing it when I was about 8 and it was scary as hell.

I never owned Silent Hill but played demos and a cousins version a few times....it was damn frightening!

Watching some clips of it on youtube now - it still looks scary! :p

Forgot about that. Made me just want to hide in a hole and not come out again. I was really disappointed when that finished. I figured it must be the final boss becuase it was so much more flipping awesome than anything that came before it. The rest of HL after that point was pretty much a let-down IIRC.

fear or half life 2

resident evil was absolutely pathetic and the least scary thing i ever played, the graphics were an absolute joke

My mate imported it from Asia or somewhere as soon as it came out. The graphics looked amazing to us at the time. Obviously they look very pixelated and lack detail these days

First time I played resident evil was the Resi1 remake. I nearly died when the dogs jump through the window... and again when the first ******* crimson grabbed my ankles then chased me through the door!!!

Not played it since, luckily resident evil 4 is an arcadey action game so no problems completing that.

The best moment in Resident Evil 1 is when you run down a corridor with a bunch of boarded up windows. Next minute you've got zombies breaking through the windows and grabbing you. Nearly pooed myself when it first happened.

One part in metal gear solid scared the hell outta me when i was younger, the part where you have to fight the ninja? (can't really remember the name) When you have to fight him he always knew what you was going to do next.. I thought he was in the screen watching me. Mind you tho i was about 10.. but it scared the hell outta me.

I wouldn't say scary overall but there were certainly a good few jumpy moments in that game. Kept you on the edge of your seat. Great game.

I think Resident evil is one of them suddenly hearing glass smashing in a nice calm hallway and being almost killed by a load of dogs just after beating a boss and forgetting to use the typewriter to save the game was quite scary.

Myst always creeped me out. Go figure.

I think it was because you could click, then suddenly some metallic door would slam open out of no-where.

Very strong atmosphere too, plus, you were totally on your own......or were you?

And there was always that box in one of the rooms that was filled with someones entrails, or something - made my skin crawl....

AVP 2 and the Ravenholm parts of HL2.

Incidently do all the people saying avp really mean the original?, I thought the 2nd one was
more scary, even though multiplayer was crap.
