What is your work PC like?

Nothing special really, my only dedicated work machine at the moment is

Dell Latitude E6500 (laptop)

2.2Ghz Core2Duo
1920x1200 15" screen
backlit keyboard
7200rpm hdd
nvidia something or other graphics

Those are the important specs, i often end up in a dark, wet corner or a site and the backlit keyboard is very handy! At the office i have a 22" extra display to plug into.

I work as a software engineer and the system i work on is very CPU and GPU intensive but this laptop does just fine.

I also have access to numerous dev boxes which range from 500Mhz PII's (!) to quad core phenom's and Q6600's

Since i also look after all of the IT, all of the spare capacity on VM boxes is mine to play with and i often have VMs for doing eval's and whatnot running.

I was running a crappy Acer laptop on XP with a Pentium M and 768 MB of RAM, but have "upgraded" to a Athlon XP 5500 with 2GB of RAM and Win 7. Oh yes.

Apple Mac G5 Pro

x 2 Dual-Core Intel Xeon (Quad)

6 GB RAM

NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT (hehe)

OSX 10.4.11 (Soon to be 10.6.3)

Other specs don't really matter as all running from Windows Based Server!

I like my mac for work most of the time! Would never have one at home though!

We have a mix, the oldest now being Optiplex 745, E6600, 2GB RAM. Newest being Optiplex 980 w/ i7/16gb etc. No SSD except one or two macs

Dell quad core i7, 4Gb RAM, 3x 24" screens, various laptops inc a macbook air for out of office / travelling because it's so tiny and always works (I use a macbook pro in the day half the time and the i7 PC the other half!)

Plus numerous monitoring screens.

Gigabyte UD7
[email protected]
8Gb ripjawsx @1600MHz
6950 xfire (900/1375)
Elmcrest 120Gb ssd
Corsair AX850
Corsair 800D
Hazro HZ27WC (1 dead pixel)

Work from home self employed fixing pcs so my work pc is also my game machine :)

On the desk:
Dell E5510, Dual core 5GB ram 300GBDisk...(which I really regret swapping my D630 for) :( + external 19" monitor, docking station etc etc.
But it does have Windows 7 x64 and 5GB RAM and VMware on it, so my VMs are smooooth now :)

HTC Desire for wandering around looking busy.

In the Lab:
Dell PS6000 series SAN (16x 10k SAS flavour)
2x Dell powerconnect 3 something somethings, 24port L3 with 10GbE holes in the back...
2x HP ML350 G4p + the optional upgrade dual 3.2GHz Xeons + ESXi and a big pile o' scavanged 4GB memory modules

+ Whatever Switches/Routers/Firewalls/WLCs/APs I happen to be working with on any given project.

1x Huge Mitsubushi dedicated Aircon Inverter/compressor to keep my sarnies from getting warm :)

Oh and Advanced iLO so I don't have to go into said freezer unless i'm weilding screwdrivers.

IBM ThinkPad T61. 1.8GHz Core2, 2GB RAM. Runs Windows 7 and runs everything I need fine.

Don't need a desktop PC - have a docking station setup with 19" TFT.

Various other stuff hanging around my desk, usually a 2GHz Mac Mini, and an old T43 laptop for software testing/running old XP only software.

As I work from home, my home office is my business office. Currently running:

i7 2600k
Asus P8P67 [ATX]
8GB G.Skill DDR3
ATI 6850
2TB [500GB Boot, 1TB Data, 500GB Media]
Windows 7 64-Bit

x2 Samsung SyncMaster B2230

Some sort of HP laptop; P8600, 4GB, 500GB (7200rpm) and Win 7 64bit (we're pre-pre-testing our company image of the latter at the moment as we need 64bit to address 4GB of memory for VM's ... previous it was running XP 32bit and only seeing 2.3GB :(). Hooked up to a 22" Dell LCD when I'm at my desk.

Other kit I use is hidden away in the R&D lab at the other end of the office floor, (DL3x0's, Dell blades, HP rx2660's etc etc)

Lenovo Thinkpad T500, 2Gb Ram and core 2 due 8600 i think....Lenovo 19" monitor on my desk with a docking station. Windows XP. Running some awful full disk encryption that makes it crawl, USB and DVD drive disabled by policy. Wifi only recently enabled.

It'll be a while before i see Windows 7. Oh and i'm not an admin of my local machine. I could be if i asked, but can't be bothered.

Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHz
4GB Ram
1x 19" Monitor
2x 17" Monitors (one at each side of 19)
64 bit Windows 7

Used to have 2 19" monitors, but someone needed one, so I'm stuck with 1 and 2 17" ones :( Still not bad for work though :D

Lenovo X200 Thinkpad with a 250GB Hard disk and 4GB RAM running Windows XP 32- bit and an Intel Core 2 Duo processor running at 2.6GHz
Docking station set up at desk connected to:
1x 19" Dell widescreen monitor
1x 19" HP monitor. Both LCD

They have the ship locked down so tight, with Mcrappy antivirus, Safeboot hard disk encryption and Sanctuary to lock down the USB ports, with about 70-80 processes running in the background...Their current aim is to get Windows 7 booting up and useable within 45-60 seconds...very unlikely.

Performance wise...they are crippled! It is understandable that companies need to ensure that the computers are secure, but to cripple them so much that they are barely useable with today's technology is so frustrating!

Dell Optiplex 755 (Getting on a bit now)
Windows 7 Ultimate 32Bit
2x 73GB Raptors
1x 250GB HDD
4GB RAM
2x Dell P190S 19" TFT

HP ProLiant ML115 G5 (Basic Lab stuff)
ESXi
2x 1TB HDD
Quad Intel NIC
8GB RAM

Q6600, 4GB RAM, 60Gb SSD, 250GB SATA Storage, 8800GTS, 2x19" Dell monitors. Relatively decent, but getting an upgrade this year to an i7 with 8Gb, hopefully 2x24's as well.

Depends where on-site I am. I've got a Sun Ultra 40 m2 in my main office, a Dell OptiPlex 360 in the other office and a Mac Mini (server, but used as a workstation) in the server room.

(And that's not including the servers...)
