What language would you learn?

I can speak English, French, creole, some Hindi. But as my girlfriend studies French and Russian, I am slowly learning some russian words, which I hope to improve. I know the key words like hello, bye, darling, good-looking so far... :)

Otherwise I don't really have the need to learn anything else.

Cantonese.

My g/f is from HK and it'd be great to understand more than the odd word/phrase when she's talking to friends/family. plus its a damn cool language  :D

japanese, i really like a lot of the things that come from japan, the language also sounds really really cool.

Its one of the few places in the world id really like to visit.

This was prompted by reading Scuzi's thread about greetings in numerous languages I was wondering how many people here would be interested in learning another language. Or just wish they could speak. And if so what language would you want to learn/know and why?
I will be self teaching myself Brasilian Portuguese very soon, I would also like to learn Italian,

Reason are simple I'll be moving out to Brasil soon to live with my "little lady" (who is Brasilian, so I'll need to speak the langauge;) and Italian because I a) like it and b) the "little lady" and her parents speak it;).
Also, would you make the effort to learn a few words of a language relating to the country you are visiting?
Yes - as I need whilst in brasil earlier this year.
Do you feel a bit embarassed or irritated when you go abroad and are completely clueless?

In some ways I loved it, becuase it gave me a sense of anonymity i was free to ponder life and distance myself from my surroundings. on the other side though I hated it a lot because I couldn't comunicate with people leaving me to rely on others all the time.

I find it hard to learn a langauge as I lack confidence and tend to get a tad embaressed when I fluff it up and frustrated as well.

Italian is just SUCH a beautiful language - whenever I'm in Italy I just get weak at the knees hearing the people talk. Most of the time it's in a marina or a shipyard and it sounds like they are having a huge a fight all the time :p but it's just fabulous to listen to.
I'd agree with that, whilst in Brasil when the "little lady" spoke italian to her Mum or Dad it always sounded like they were fighting about something, leading me to panic and worry, then she would explain what it was about and I'd noramlly laugh about it.

I would like to perfect my spanish. Its quite good, but theres always little things which need doing.

My German and English are perfect though :D

I would like to learn Japanese as I want to go there for a few years at least to see what it's like etc etc

I want to learn lots of languages :)

I speak basic conversational French, so I want to pursue that further and hopefully get fluent. From there, I'll probably learn Spanish—since they're fairly similar—before moving on to a Germanic language (probably German first) which would then open up some others (I'm mainly interested in Nordic languages) if I choose to.

That's my plan for now anyway.

I wouldn't mind knowing German because it's quite widely spoken/useful in Europe (I've already learnt English, French and Spanish)
Furthermore if you're not interested in learning another language - why not?
Not worth the effort for the little amount of time I would actually use it.
Also, would you make the effort to learn a few words of a language relating to the country you are visiting?
Yes. I learnt a few words/phrases of Swedish before going there.
Do you feel a bit embarassed or irritated when you go abroad and are completely clueless?
No, because I've never been to a country where I've been completely cluelss. To be honest I'm more embarrassed about the actions of other people, you know, the ones who just go up to people and start talking in English. Seems kind of arrogant to me to not even attempt to converse in the local lingo.

I'm pretty fluent in French and know enough Italian to get by. I would love to be fluent in Japanese, I tried when I was younger, basic words and stuff but I never kept it up. I think I'll try get back into it again. :)

I can already speak passable Spanish. I'd like to improve, but that's a pretty lame answer. So... I'd like to be able to speak Greek and Italian, just because I like how they sound. Portuguese is another one that I'd like to learn a bit of, because I want to visit Brazil one day.

Also, would you make the effort to learn a few words of a language relating to the country you are visiting?
Yes, I always do - without exception. It's only polite, and I think that it improves your experience.

I do a little, but I find that most people are receptive to newcomers - certainly much more receptive to people who speak a different language than we are in the UK.
