What "man jobs" have you done today?

get 22mm and plane it down.

Get 18mm and pack it up off the joists with some 2mm strips of wood.

I've gone with the latter :) Got the 18 and will wither get wood, glazing packers or something to make up the space.

So last night I took the radiator off the wall for the plasterer who has come today and cut a board out of the plywood sheet. Then I ran out of time :)

Had some leaks in our bedroom and our daughters bedroom so whilst I had the tower I thought I would investigate.

I removed some tiles and found this ... :o Rotten laff, missing laff and a monster of a birds nest.

Seems like the local starling mafia had taken roost in my eaves. I was quite the Hilton too. 4 bags of feathers sticks and straw.
That wasn't causing the leak in the room though. A botched previous repair had failed. Someone had used good old silicone to repair tiles and felt.

Since I had tiles off and was repairing the felt I put in some eaves trays to stop the felt sagging.

And while I was at it, the verges were totally empty so decided to do that too. I didn't bother with dry verge.

Need to paint the fascia too :p

Awesome job! You have certainly got your moneys worth out of that tower :).

The fascia boards look like they need a bit of attention next :p

Good job there - While you was up there you should have sprayed tiles with roof tile moss killer - Do mine twice a year and roof is as clean as a whistle - any moss regrowth just falls off. :)

Christmas eve or no Christmas eve the DIY still has to be done.. just fitted a new shower mixer, riser bar and rain head for the bathroom refit.

What keeps the mortar in situ and not from falling into the void behind it under the tiles?

Not a great deal that's why it's a maintenance task when it all falls out. You're bodge artist will just butter them up but the proper way is too remove it all and start again.

Modern methods have a dry verge usually plastic. I'll reserve judgement if they last 30 years without needing replacement.

I doubt the dry verges will last 30 years. The plastic is super brittle. They also discolour and go from dark grey to light grey in a few years. They do look nice and neat when they are done, just a shame they are so cheaply made.

Also They are often installed by gypos, who will simply nail them into the end of the rotten battens and they all blow off in the next heavy wind.

Brilliant, Glad to see this about Verges. As my garage the verges on one side (other side it attached to house) is starting in places to crumble.

I am no builder. What is the best way to tackle this, only some areas where the mortar on the verge is crumbling out. Can I just mix some mortar up and pack it in?

What would be the best way for a DIY to address this.

Glad this has come up actually.
