What "man jobs" have you done today?

I was looking at reciprocating saws but it's getting the nose in - however with a long blade that may work better (controlling it rather than having to move the saw to cut.

I've just checked mine and my 200mm blade gives me 180mm of reach (with the shoe removed). Looks like you can get 300mm blades though which might help. Might be a costly tool to buy just for one job though. I've used mine a lot recently when cutting up pallets (mainly to go through the nails). I have also used it to cut large bits of wood quite neatly (takes a bit of practice).

To keep on topic:
Trusty car cleaning bucket handle fell apart.

So made a new one out of a off cut of wood. Used my disc sander to give it its round ish shape then finished by hand.

Just wondering what's the likelihood of the cables from this outlet going up rather than horizontal?
I'm installing wall mounts for my speakers and looking to drill roughly in the marked section.
The left wall is the front of the house and the marked wall is a party wall, semi detatched brick built around 1960s.
If above the outlet isn't likely to be safe, do you think the area to the left closer to the corner is ok?

I take it that’s not plasterboard?

Cables should run up and down but there is no way we’ll be able to tell you exactly where it is. That’s also not to say a previous owner hasn’t done something else either.

It could be anywhere in that green box.

I’d get a cable finder from screwfix, they are pretty inexpensive and far cheaper than an electrician or a hospital visit.

I don't know? Sorry I'm a DIY noob. It's my first house and moved in last December. Thought I'd use the time now to do it up properly! I've done my projector mount but was 100% sure there was nothing behind.
This I don't know, and the only place it can go.

I figured getting one of those wire detectors is probably the safest way! Probably get it from Amazon, any recommendations?

Ground or first floor ?

Ground floor.

My first point of call would be to remove the socket and see where the cable entry comes from. Mind you, with all that paint on the socket you may need to make good afterwards ;)

My guess would be..... ground floor room, 1960's build. I would guess plaster not plasterboard (unless it's been done more recently) and the cables will more than likely run down to under the floorboards. Easy way to check would be to turn the sockets off at the consumer unit and the take the front off the socket and see if the cable goes up or down when it goes out of the backbox. Obviously this is no guarantee of anything. I have found diagonal cables before! Obviously there could be other cables and pipes so a detector is a good idea too.

Amazon Prime means I should be getting the detector later today so I'll keep you updated!
In the mean time, I've been sorting garage stuff out. I've got the PJB Garage Defender and in the instructions it says to drill a hole 90mm deep, but the expanding bolt is only 60mm long. Any reason for this?

:D As long as it's deep enough so that the bolt is flush with the plate, I'm good right?
First time using expanding bolt, so just wasn't sure if it does something funky for whatever reason and needed the extra depth.

So the detector arrived, and it seems the wires do run up! I'll have to set the mounts a bit to the left then.
In general it seems to be pretty accurate, but the opposite wall (the one with the projector wall mounted), pretty much is saying the entire wall has metal/cables across all of it?!
There's 2 light switches near the edge of the wall which gets detected as expected, but the rest? There's a radiator on the opposite side (hallway), but the pipes (I can see these) run at bottom just above the skirting board.
Any ideas why it might be detecting something across the whole wall?
