What "man jobs" have you done today?

Replaced 4 wall lights, including patching the plasterboard to conceal the previous hole, and replaced dimmer switch with and LED dimmer. Also cut the grass and spread feed & seed. Just about to sand down and prime the skirting boards....

Loads to do but my motivation has gone... Probably something to do with the rugby being on, Palace playing and 3 and being slightly hungover.

My motivation disintegrated this morning -- Sitting at PC and wife came in and asked if I could take thingy out of whatsit -- totally baffled I followed her into kitchen and it was soap drawer in washing machine - said when you have washed it call me - it is a pain to fit back.!!!!!!

Crash bang wallop - walks into kitchen and she is standing there holding drawer and looking stupid - took it off her with a load of french words and she said the other bit is over there !!! - so it did fit back but not locked in - I am in computer room - she is in bedroom and poor cat is worn out running to and fro with notes we are sending to each other.

The ice is starting to melt as she is cooking dinner - be glad when day is over.

Changed two bath taps for one of those shower mixers. What an awkward job. Took me over an hour to remove them as those adjustable tap wrench gizmos are almost impossible to use in a tight space with one hand.

Quite pleased with the result though. I wasn't expecting much as the combi is the lowest power in the range, but its better than the electric shower it is replacing. Should hopefully save a bit of cash as the electric shower was using £1.20 an hour!

Also cleaned out the gutters. The front gutter was full of sludge and moss, yet the back and side were clean. All gutters were cleaned a few years ago, so I can't understand how the front is full of crap, but not the others.

My guess would be the front gutters face north - One side of my roof faces north and it was covered in moss - - the other side faces south and was almost clear. 2 years ago I cleaned all the roof tiles with moss killer - last year just sprayed with half strength mix and still got clean roof.

Put up a wall mural in the kid's playroom. Normal wallpaper is a walk in the park compared to this. The panels increase by 6mm when paste has been absorbed so you need to overlap by this amount, this is whilst going through some painstaking alignment so there are no breaks in the picture.

It's not perfect, got around a 10mm gap at the top left but it will be easy to fill. The picture alignment I'm happy with. The wall surface has a come through a little more than I'd liked. If I had to do another one I would 100% put down lining paper first. Either way it looks very good and the kids have been 'wowing' at it and it should look a little smoother when fully dried.

Made a start to my papering today after having stripped the walls about a month ago! Needing to get some wall plugs for fixing my curtain rail properly as its been half hanging off due to previous owners making a mess of fixing it last time! Should get most of the papering finished off next weekend.

Noticed a bit of spring in the corner of our soon to be study, as I'm going to be building a full wall bookcase I thought I'd better take a look, turns out there's a bit of a wet rot/woodworm problem..

:o

Got the local builders merchants to trim some big joists down to a still impressively large size and set about cutting to length..

Then treating for rot and woodworm, I bought a £10 weed sprayer off Amazon and used some ronseal rot protector.

Cut up and treated, I treated the existing floor too, at least the bits that aren't now firewood.

And started fitting properly this weekend, I had to rebuild the middle and end supporting beams too as they'd started falling apart, luckily the one end of the room is still very solid so I kept the old stuff there, plus it's 160 odd years old so thought it'd be nice to save what I could.

Right angle drill adapter to drill the holes for the bolts..

And the first one fitted(ish).

Still got to fix the end support beam in, bolt on and level the rest of the joists, source some old floorboards and spray everything one final time.

The wet has come from leaky radiator joints, bodged by the last owners. They'd actually bodged a repair for the floor too by resting a bit of wood on a pile of bricks and nailing some old window frame to the side of the rotten wood. Ugh.

Anyway, probably not very interesting to most but I'm knackered after a weekend of work and felt like sharing the pain! :o

Wow, that was some serious rot on the ends. Is there an air brick in the wall somewhere under the floor to allow air to circulate? Might be a good idea to add one if not. easy enough to do while the floor is up. You could also take the opportunity to stick some insulation board between the joists.

While I was cleaning the windows the other day i noticed some condensation inside one of the units. I was a bit anoyed as I only fit the windows a couple of years ago so the unit shouldnt have broke down already. So i took out the glass to check for any missing sealant around the edge and found this little gap in one of the corners. So there was never any argon gas inside this unit .

Just glad I found the reason for it breaking down, at least it means the others should be ok. Melted the gap together with a soldering iron for now, but the silica inside the unit will be saturated so it'll need a new unit making.

The suppliers should replace that foc do you think?

There's an air brick each end with a good draught blowing through, it's definitely damp from the radiator which caused the problem in the corner and bad woodworm for the rest of it. Slightly worrying but the treatment should sort that room, a job for next month is treating the roof joists as I'm guessing they have a good chance of having the same problem, although I have checked them and they seem okay.

Just need to find some nice boards for less than £60 per sqm!

After 11 years I plucked up the courage to tackle decorating master bedroom.

Kept putting it off as adjoining neighbours reported they had woodworm (house was formerly 1 unit so some joists and even floorboard run between properties) but absolutely no sign from inspection hatches in the floor.

Made another access hatch and with a bit of help from a mate I got some downlights fitted for the lounge rather than the horridly poor ceiling light that used those 25w golfball type bulbs (I have 20/20 vision and couldn't see enough to read of an evening). Just need to fit an LED dimmer next week.

Took up old carpet in bedroom, moved out furniture, filled dings and dents in walls/ceiling with easyfill and just got to sand that over the weekend and then clean up ready to paint. Also going to screw boards down as floors so squeaky.

Nice to see progress but shame it took me a decade to get around to it!

How long did you leave the easy fill to dry?

From experience with polyfill it dries and shrinks after a week or so - so leaving an excess proud seems to work better.

I find it's fine after a day. I just sand and then by the time I get around to painting it it's well and truly dried. Given there are no real deep areas that I have filled apart from a few screw holes, it all dries very quickly.

Only issue I've had was when using scrim tape on some blown ceiling plaster from clout nails moving, I didn't let it dry enough and easyfill started pealing when painting. Probably a week isn't a bad thing for bigger areas. For the bigger/deeper areas I tend to do a mist coat first - thinking about it I don't think I did do that first so could well have been the reason for peeling.

I need to fill an area in my lounge ceiling where light fitting was and I'll use easyfill there as well. Don't know what I would have done without that stuff, so easy to use.

Our shower has sprung a leak, so awaiting it to be fied by a plumber as want it to done right. It's made a bit of a mess in the hallway which is in the process of being painted.

I made her do this so it's not in her head and I have half an idea what she wants. Trying to find the effort to move forward with this...

Edit The red hearts are what we did on the 14th of feb. LOL was cheaper than taking her out
