What Modular PSU to get?

I don't know, I would guess so as most are

Anyway.. what I am finding as we speak is that internaly they are almost idetical (just smaller heatsinks for the IZT) and my decision to go for the IZT was based strictly on the assumption that it features 6 independent 12v rails, opposed the U96 that has 2 independent and 2 combined. Something that I am not so sure of now.

I did a bit of more digging and I came across a rather interesting article...
if you have the time have a look as the point of interest is the information it gives about electrical noise... something that I believe it to be a very important factor in all electronics. Espacially motherboards.

here is the link:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/other/display/10-1kw-psu-roundup.html#sect0

Now if you see the graphs from the Tagan psu... I think you will get a bit dissapointed as I have.

pls have a read as there is another point I want to make afterwards...

James I would appreciate it if you could get round reading it... ... epsecially the page analysing the Antec psu... and I'll post some comments just after u have

Thing is I haven't exactly researched the specs of the coolermaster and the corsair, all I wanted to do is for someone to stop recommending the corsair all the time. It gets a bit boring that everyone recommends it when someone asks a PSU question.

Hello icey_haj, if we turn the argument around and put yourself in the original posters shoes: Would you want someone to recommend a power supply that is so highly regarded that the majority of the time, it is the only one recommended or a power supply that is considered not quite as good but is recommended because they didn't want to upset anyone because another power supply, a better one, is recommended all the time? :)

....and to the matter at hand... I just wanted to make another point here,

Hello grs_link, I couldn't agree anymore, it is better to run a system of a power supply that isn't delivering it's stated power all the time and that is why I would actually recommended the Corsair HX 620W in this situation. However, running the original posters system along with an Nvidia GTX 280 on the Corsair HX 520W, I certainly couldn't imagine it would cause any harm because they are extremely well built units. :)

I really don't know what to say.. just that with my GTX on this psu the system reboots during gaming. I guess I am gonna have to get the Tagan sooner than I thought.

What james.miller has said would very much explain why you were having problems.

Can I also ask grs_link, if you don't mind me asking, what sort of system are you looking at running on a 1100 wattage power supply because it seems a little exsessive? :)

I think I mentioned I was considering a 3way Sli... going to a 2 way soonish...

I am moving to new case which is gonna be my last major build I think..

I am a currently sitting on abit with E8400 and a 88gtx
2 custom loops for cooling in a CM-stacker

and going to a thermlatake mozart... adding a 3rd loop for mobo, hds and mems
and the sli (3way and quad is a maybe at the moment)

So choosing the right psu is of most importance to me.

Having said all that.. I am gonna have to dissagre with you on the price issue.

I mean have a look at these values:

corsair750 -> 109E
tgn1100 izt -> 130E
tgn1100 u96 -> 145E
tgn1300 u96 -> 155E
antec 850ec -> 148E
antec 1000ec -> 178E
PC Power & Cooling 750w -> 149E

I think 150E is a good price range for a psu
I am sorry for speaking in Euros but I'll give you an example..

.... let say that in pounds you wouldn't want to break the barrier of 100quid so you would settle for something around 70-80
but if did go over... lets say 109 then u could do 115 or 120
similar with Euro... since I am breaking the 100 barrier, raising it to 150E seems acceptable... I would go thought to 200 or 300
(corsar 1000w is at 209E and PowerCooling 1200 is 399E) ... so you see over 150 the prices go way up

Ohh!!! and something a bit off topic...

have you read anand's review on they new nvidia gfx... it says at some point that you would have to dedicate something around 286w just for the card.. how high would that go in 2way or even 3way sli.

so I think we are getting to the point where in a year or two a 1000psu would be what a 750w is nowdays... ...don't you agree?

I'm a bit paranoid about PSU getting too hot and ended up buying a PC Power Cooling after reading so many different reviews on different PSUs. The decisive factor for me is simply that the PCPC 750W's temp from idle to full load remains almost the same. It's in a completely different league compare to Corsair TX 750 and 650 and very quiet, I used Seeasonic S12 500W before and do know what actually quiet means! It's not modular though but I don't really care much about modular in the first place.

Hello grs_link, oh yes, sorry, I missed that part.

Having said all that.. I am gonna have to dissagre with you on the price issue.

Price issue? Care to elaborate lpease because I don't think I have commented on prices in this thread... :)

Hello gareth170, just doing a search about the power supply that you have mentioned, a 800 wattage unit that costs under £50 straight away, speaks about the quality of that unit and I would personally suggest looking for a well known branded power supply.

If you don't mind me asking, what sort of system are you looking at running? :)

hi

You know that if it's too cheap to be true, it's probably is and I find this always true with PSUs, they're cheap for a reason.
There was a thread about explosive Hiper PSUs, try to use search you may still find it.

the system in sig i would be running it on...

as i said above on people reviews they say its a great psu. so it can't be to bad??

i know people say well known branded psu are better but ive found afew not well known branded psu's to be good.

i bet the well known brands as now wasn't well known when they first started.

I paid £105 for my PSU, which is "only" 750W and not even modular. I think £50 for a 800W AND modular PSU is suspiciously cheap considering a Seasonic M700 modular is over £100.
But it's your money, your choice, you ask for opinions, we give it to you. Spend whichever way you are comfortable with but it's generally better to choose a lower power, true high efficiency than the one you mentioned.

sorry wiz... I you said exsessive, but I read expensive, my bad

that is y I started talking about prices. My bad, my bad. :|

...by the way.. did you have a look on the xbit labs article..? what are your thought...

is it worth the stretch to get the antec 1000w?

Nooo!!!! I am against Hiper as well... trust me I have one..
the 100pound region is what you should be aimming really...

don't go cheap when it comes to psu.. and they are a lot of options out there...
pricegrab what you can get with the amount of money u want to spend.

and try to balance it out with quality instead of quantity.

Dunno if anyone has mentioned it but this months edition of Custom PC Mag has a fantastic review section of PSU's, theres lots of them and tests too that can help you choose, my Corsair 750W came today, they said performance wise (and in their tests) it was one of the higher performers, the only thing that apparently lets it down is the noise it makes but I dont know if it makes any noise yet as I havent built my pc yet!

i just bought the Hi-Power 900W Modular PSU version which i received today.. i must say the quality is very good, also the cables are high quality. it runs very quiet and cool even under load. tbh for the price it was well worth it.

i have a question. do some psu's use less watts than others? i mean on my old psu it was using 298w at ida, on my new psu its using 230w at ida. also the system is running much better and cooler...
