What self defence should I learn?

Krav! Done a few lessons, good fun!

The problem with krav is that if its taught as per the design, it makes you very dangerous and very likely to overreact, as taught properly you are trained to strike instinctively to disable or maim. if they aren't training you that way, you're not really learning krav, just afew moves from the art...

These threads make me want to tear my hair out. Everyone on here's an expert.

OP - what do you want, to learn how to defend yourself in a violent situation? Or to become proficient in a martial art that will teach you self defence techniques as well as fitness, stamina, strength?

panthro not everyone is claiming to be an expert - chill bro

Martial arts, boxing etc does not suit everyone - each to there own as you say.

Im not literally tearing it out, but you know what I mean, when it comes to martial arts theres too many opinions. Im frosty :)

Pick a martial art you like the look of and learn it. Granted some are far superiour when it comes to self defence, but learning something is better than learning nothing.

MMA is awesome, but it is not self defence there are rules. Lots of the kung fu styles are good for self defence, as they go for the groin and eye pokes etc etc.

As long as you enjoy what your are doing it's all that matters, and hopefully you learn something too.

if you want to learn to defend yourself in a real life situation then boxing is pretty useless. its a great sport but how often do you see guys trading jabs etc in a real fight? it doesnt happen, people grab, kick, bite etc. the fight usually ends up on the floor (which is why brazilian jiujitsu gets so much praise)

how many boxers have you seen in the ufc?

if you are still keen on boxing then i recommend you look at thai boxing, its a lot more rounded.

you are best off looking at MMA, or picking a good martial art like jujitsu, brazilian jiujitsu, krav maga. just my opinion but these teach you how to defend yourself from just about any attack you can think of, boxing teaches you to go toe to toe with another boxer. what if someone comes at you with a weapon like a knife or a bottle for example.

just my 2p

I have to say that this is not a good test for effectiveness of an art for self defense. A good self defense system may incorporate things like this but its certainly not an acid test.

As for picking a club: find a club with a good instructor. See how good the senior students are - that will give you an indication of how good the instructor is at teaching.

the majorty of fights you can get out of with a good mix of confidence and diplomacy showing them that you will give them trouble if they were to start something but also backing down at the same time.

I have never been in a proper fight deploying this strat and the closest i have been is a 5"5 "friend" who i ripped into a little to much about one particular joke and he tried to headbut / swing at me fourtantley he can't reach and i didn't have to do much to stop him :P

lots of friends been punched in the nose etc and thats the case of accidently agrivating a moron and then backing down to soon giving them a free pass to assault you.

martials arts from a self defence perspective is primarly useful for building confidence imo, but you never know when you will get attacked by a crazy and have to defend yourself for real.

I would do kickboxing, boxing or any martial art with some continous (not point sparring) contact is involved, depends as much on quality of teacher and the group itself as much as the sport, but kickboxing and boxing are going to have more fit blokes who can handle themselves then a taekwondo class which will probably have a more skinny and less physical bunch.

In my experience the best "martial art" (and here I include boxing) is whatever "fits" you best. For me its karate. For my best mate its aikido. One size does not fit all. Try and few (most classes offer a taster session for free) and see which one grabs you.

Learn to run... fast and long.

Failing that pick a martial art that combines grappling and striking and find a reputable club to train at.

Great advise.

The instructor himself may be an amazing martial artist but if his teaching methods are not the best, or there are people who are there to just mess around then it could effect the quality of your lesson.

lol yeah this as well haha. in a city at night i'm never to bothered about groups of people as if they were to start something and it was a little hairy the average (pretty much everyone out in town) could not catch me

Added bonus of being able to be a bit cocky to people out in the open :P.

friend was walking through a rough area and got "attacked" by a bunch of kids he hit one of them and ran off would have loved to see look on their faces as they attempt to run further than 400 metres

if a bouncer ever roughed up a friend to the extent of putting him in hospital (they have been very rough in the past) this would be my tactic as well hit one of them in the chin and run off lol. (not to hard just enough to really get him angry) great fun.

Where does that leave skinny blokes like Bruce Lee or Jet Lee. I am sure they could easily handle themselves compared to some big burley boxer. Just because someone is skinny does not mean they are not strong or cannot handle themselves.

As I said before Boxing, Kick Boxing are great but they are sports. I'm not saying you wouldn't be able to defend yourself using them, as obviously you easily could.

Be that are not dedicated self defence systems either, and will not have a lot of the situations covered that you could find yourself in, in a self defence situation.

I was considering taking one up too, if only for something to do a few nights a week :)

Can anyone recommend anything for me? I am a complete novice in it.

I have been interested in something like Akido, or perhaps kick boxing? not sure.

I have been told that which stye for you depends on your size and stuff. I have around 6'1 - 6'2, and have been doing a lot of weight lifting and naturally have a large frame.

Anyone got suggestions O.o

bruce lee did boxing and contact sports not exclusively point sparring thats the only point i was making.

i do full contact karate which is very similar to kickboxing, i was just generalising sorry, but in general a lot of taekwondo clubs will be lucky to have a bruce lee whereas most boxing clubs will have fix blokes who go to gym/ run ect and take it a little mroe seriously as its a sport alwasy will be exceptions with traditonal martial arts club run by strict teachers who take into account both physical performance as well as technique and these are the clubs you would get most out of but they are hard to find at least in my area.

Krav Maga

If there was a trainer near me it's defiantly the one i'd learn with out a doubt. It's what all the special forces are trained in. Essentially it was developed in Israel for their SF, and is designed to inflict the maximum amount of damage and critical pain to an opponent in as few moves as possible. they train you against single / multiple / unarmed / armed and well your drunk dazed etc.

Obviously you'd have to restain your self a bit in a friday night fight or you'd end up killing some one pretty quick.

EDIT \\ It's also the one used in 24, Borune, Bond etc etc
