What sort of Mileage is it worthwhile getting a Diesel?

You always mention this however never take into account come resale time they are generally worth the same £1-2k more.

I do agree for the miles mentioned a diesel would be silly however some diesels are worth buying over petrol for example a 535d is pretty much the best all round engine from the current 5 series range, same goes for the A5 3l TDI.

yeh, but the one you posted is a diesel. That's fine if you want the automotive version of a glass of water, but some people prefer a can of Red Bull.

150bhp diesel isn't going to be slow, especially if you chip it

i would rather have the v6 too, but it does have poor spec..
also, insurance is going to much way higher on that than on the tdi?

Okay firstly, forget chipping it because then you are defeating the object of the extra economy and entering the world of tuning vs standard, which cannot be compared.

Secondly, no it won't be slow - but that isn't the point. People don't generally dislike diesels because of a lack (or perceived) lack of speed, they don't like them due to their narrow powerbands, excessively short gear ratios, their low-revving nature and uncomfortable power delivery.

And the godforsaken din that they make. Diesel drivers. Your cars are not quiet, they don't sound "nice" either! Stop lying to both yourselves and everyone you meet in the pub! :D
 
the power band is fine, you can overtake without having to change gear ;)

4-pot diesels are very noisy, but bmw 6 cylinder ones aren't at all
mated to the 6-speed auto box they're really quite nice..

high output 4-pot units like the 150-180bhp VAG ones aren't really dull at all
the 90-110 ones won't set your on fire, but the 130bhp aren't that bad either

Having niggles with mine that are doing my head in and costing me too much to keep in repair.. constant stone chips.. dodgy brakes.. just want something else.

Becuase it isn't true, thats why I don't mention it.

Diesels are generally worth x% more than the equivilent petrol model. As they depreciate, that x% goes down, so you'll never get the entire difference back.

If there is a £2k difference and the petrol is £9k and the diesel is £11k there wont be a £2k difference in 4 years time when the diesel is £4k will there?
 
I think the fact West wants to change his car becuase his current one is getting stone chips and chipped windscreen pretty much sums his car buying habits up - epic fail.

Did you know stonechips received are directly proportional to how close you drive to the car in front? With the mileage you drive you shouldnt suffer from that many at all...

No, no and no agian!

its not just that, its the constant mechanical niggles and the constant problems with the brakes.. its also had a new Clutch, new GB as well as new Thermo housing and other bits. Considering the car is not even 3 Years old thats a lot seeing as I only had the car a year.
 
Ive only ever had one new screen over around 200,000 miles of driving. And that was smashed racing a mate down a gravelly country lane right up his arse.

Stop tailgating people and you wont get smashed screens ;)
