WHAT THE HELL PAYPAL!?

Yeah it won't be Paypal that is the issue here. Also don't you have online banking that has an itemisation of your account transactions? It's more than likely you buying something else for £3 and forgetting though or a bank charge for using the bank .

I've tried to look all around and can't find any evidence, my account says:

Balance: £174.69
Available: £112.03

I've bought a few things off Steam but can't find evidence of that either.

I get a bank charge for USD, it's about £1.50 but I suppose that's different depending on the bank. As has been said Paypal tell you exactly what charges there are and a final amount.

dont paypal bill you in £ even if it what your buying is paid for in $? because paypal do the currency conversion and not your bank?

Have you purchased anything at shops? My local corner shop does all car transactions at the end of the month which always makes me scratch my head at first if I have a charge but haven't been there for a week.

I would imagine what has happened is, its your first card payment made through paypal using that particular card, this often happens a small amount goes out of your account along with the sum total which is ‘un-shown’, this always tends to return back to your account. Why this small amount is taken and returned, who knows, probably because you are at present un-verified according to paypal. Once you verify your account, the details will be there to read how, then you won’t have this problem again. The amount taken will turn back up in your account but it may take a day or two maybe upto 5 days..
Verify your account as soon as pos, once verified it should run o.k..
I use paypal simply to process card payments, if the facility is there online I will use it, same as ‘Nochex’.
Simply use paypal as a processing mechanism for card payments, its good for that, but nothing else.

.

Never had any problems with Barclays. I pay for all my purchases in USD via PayPal, and I've never been charged more than the stated amount. As others have said, it's taken from your account in GBP, and PayPal pay the recipient in their respective currency.

I paid for my Bastion soundtrack in USD directly, though, and I didn't get charged any sort of extra fee then, either.

Nah, I haven't been to a corner shop since I quit smoking. This is just confusing as hell.

So your saying the money could have just gone to Paypal temporarily?

Yeah, I don't think Nationwide do any kind of massive rates on currency exchange, the website just says £1 + 2%.

I would say that the missing money is part of the 3 pound verification money that they charge when you use a new card or something. Once it shows in your account (can take a few days) you put the 4 digit pin in verification part of PayPal and then it shows your card as verified... This is what happened to me on my first set of orders... It is clearly described (well it was) on their website when you first use a card.

I've used paypal a LOT. The amount listed in £ on the statement above is exactly what they take, nothing more.
People are mentioning the verification fee. When I opened my account, this was in pennies, not pounds, but maybe it's gone up. If it is this, it will reappear in your account in under a week.

More likely possibilities:
* a bank charge for some reason: but since paypal do all currency conversaions and charge you in your own currency, this is very unlikely
* There is another payment of £3 for something you have forgotten, that didn't appear on your account immediately.

One thing you NEED: online banking for your main account, so you can check your bank statement online and see every transaction made.

i don't get this. on your bank statement online or in print or over the phone there will be one entry for this PP transaction and there will be a value next to it. what is that value?! that will tell you if this has anything to do with £3 extra.

This. Your statement will tell you exactly what's gone out of your account to the number. I'd have gone straight to it...

Paypal have only charged you £5.84 for that transaction, and your bank won't have charged you a fee for a different currency, because you paid in pounds to paypal. The £3 is either part of the paypal sign up and verification steps that you neglected to read. (I thought it was only pence they borrowed to check a card though) or something completely different. Your statement will tell you in a heartbeat.

Heres some sound monetary advice: If you need money in your account for something important don't buy games off of steam with it...

Christ Alive, you are peeing your pants about £3!

If you needed £3 so much you shouldn't have brought the games.

lol talk about missing the point entirely, and 3 pounds is 3 pounds you view is its ok to get ripped off, or just that you fancy acting superior?

Still think its something to do with the use of a card for the first time on an un-verified account, I’m sure it will be returned, but may take a day or two, if really worried ask the bank if they can give you an idea what’s happened.

@hank Marvin
If I lost £3 for every internet transaction I make using paypal as a payment processor, I would worry, it would cost me a pretty large amount after a years financial transactions. Checking online bank account straight after a purchase, only tells me how much payment went out, not always to who or where, until the following day or day after that..

The Op is the one blaming Paypal for something which is ENTIRELY not their fault.

Many years using Paypal and knowing how it works :)

?? what? I don't understand this at all. In my online banking I have a list of every single transaction and the recipient, along with the value. is yours just one entry with a single bottom line figure and no recipients?!
