Basically what of that should i be upgrading atm? reason im thinking of upgrading is because the game i play BF3, im running at High settings, and it runs it fine kinda, in hectic parts and quite a few areas my fps drops to the low 40's, high 30's and i notice the "fps lag". Usually it ranges from like 55-65 otherwise when theres not much going on in the open areas of maps.

Ive always wanted to overclock my cpu thinking that will make a difference? however ive no experience in doing so and im kinda scared incase i ****
something up!

cheers

• Keep your CPU/RAM/Board.
• Keep the PSU.

What model 58** series GFX card is it?

Budget?

Dont be, plenty of guides floating around, add a aftermarket heastink (if you are using the stock one) and get cracking:cool:

card is an XFX if thats what you meant?

By heatsink you mean fan? i have a cpu cooler also, quite a big thing lol. Il have to open it up and have a look at what one but i thinks its decent.

Budget, depends on how many upgrades i need i guess, dont mind spending a bit to future proof, specially if you say keep them 4 things means it frees money for something else! I find it hard to be specific when it comes to money cuz i always spend way to much anyway lol

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

We need to check the actual model of the GPU, this will be either a 5870 or 5850.

ohhh sorry, thought id wrote it down, its a 5870

i did have 2 4870 crossfired before, but i always found them running really hot cuz they were close togetehr in my case, because i think my sound card takes a slot. coolermaster haf 9** is my case

Cool, well I see two options,

1) Sell it and replace it with the best card you can afford, again depending on your budget, also the newer card may not even be much of a performance boost depending on what you can afford.

2) Get another 2nd hand 5870 and run the pair together in Crossfire.

My CPU on the standard clock 2.66ghz, is that good enough to support one of the better cards out now? or do i deffo need to overclock it.

Someone suggested a 6850 2gb, is that a big difference?

You'll get a better upgrade for less money with crossfiring the card you already have. The only issue would be the heat as you said. What case do you have? You might be able to fit more fans to improve air flow and fit a second 5870 and have better performance and still cost less.

Personally I'd wait to see what Kepler brings. There's no point in upgrading to a 580 when the 6** series will be here very shortly.
5870CF out peforms a 580 anyway. I have a similar rig and I'm waiting for Kepler. When it comes out, I'll compare price to the 79** and buy accordingly.
My advice - don't upgrade until either Kepler arrives or the 79** drop in price, or both.

yea its just frustrating when i feel i cant run bf3 at ultra smoothly, so i play at High, which is nice and im fine with it but when i notice a bit of fps slow down on that to it annoys me, so my ocd kicks in and tells me i need to upgrade something lol

Ok i just downloaded prime95 and ran it. and my temps were at like 90+ :O usually they idle at around 35-40. So no idea why this is, is that what the program does? i havent overclocked yet btw, but i found a good guide to do it. Some fan in my pc has been making an "intermittent" sound i guess is the best way to explain it, like its not smooth kinda sound. maybe its the cooler?

What are you using to monitor the temps?

I find RealTemp is good, run it while running prime95. report back your findings or a screenshot.
