Leaving Bad Sisters aside for a minute...
The Winter King finally turned up on normal ITV (it premiered on ITX-X) so at least you can fast forward the adverts.
Oh dear... I read the books last year and Bernard Cornwell did a credible job of blending the characters from the Arthurian legend into the grim reality of pre Saxon Britain, when the Druids were still vying for supremacy against the rise of Christianity and the country was being invaded and colonised by the Saxons from Europe. In the books, Cornwell was deliberately ambiguous about magic and mysticism, nothing happened that couldn't be explained by non supernatural or other worldly forces. But already in Ep 1 people are having visions of the future events, etc. The start was very shaky. In the books Derfel is the main character and narrator so the story is told through his first person view. Instead we get a lot of Uther and Arthur and the actor playing Derfel is just awful. And without starting a debate about ethnic casting - a black Merlin? In the books he is described as having a dark (as in Celtic) complexion but not Afro-Caribbean. And there seemed to be far more people represented by actors from non white backgrounds than you would expect in that period of British history.
The main thrust of the first book was that Merlin was MIA and that the Druid community at Glastonbury (looked nothing like in the show) needed his (and Arthur's) returnand it wasn't until much later that Derfel found him, purely by accident.
Obviously the story has to be adapted and abridged somewhat for the show and The Last Kingdom also went a bit away from the books in many respects. But TWK seems to be doing it worse and also seems a lot lower budget than TLK.
Just started The Penguin, very enjoyable first episode with fairly standard mobster fare. Generally I think Batman works best when it's more campy and trying less to be grim dark, but this works really well so far I think because it doesn't involve Batman. I'm sure I watched The Batman but when I looked it up I'm not sure I remember any of it, maybe I'll watch it again this weekend and see if it refreshes my memory - is there anything from it that is it really critical to the story?
You don't need to watch it, but since The Penguin follows on exactly from where The Batman finishes, it does flesh out this particular universes Gotham and it's inhabitants.
It's sort of Arthurian, kind of a "what if" scenario, putting the fictional(ish) characters in a down to earth setting.Haven't read the books and didn't even know it was an Arthurian tale until the character names gave it away. Watched the first episode and thought it was quite poor and I probably won't bother with any more unless there are credible reports that it gets a lot better.
I only discovered Slow Horses a few months ago - absolutely loved itIt's sort of Arthurian, kind of a "what if" scenario, putting the fictional(ish) characters in a down to earth setting.
Anyhow in other news, discovered Slow Horses on Apple TV. Quite good, kind of Smiley meets Spooks but with a bit of black humour running through it. Gary Oldman is excellent as the jaded spymaster put out to pasture overseeing the various MI5 rejects assigned to Slough House.
The rule of tl:dr applies! Sometimes it's a week or two between visiting the forum and threads like this just tend to view the most recent pages. How can we talk about a show so much in this thread and then people 'discover' it now?!
Been watching Bad Sisters and whilst I enjoy it, it does also wind me up. Still using the insurance does not pay in case of suicide when it take 10 seconds to google that since 1800 there is am exclusion period of 1-5 years and after that they will pay.
Quite a bit I struggle to get through i.e. JP's online smearing of Roger has so many holes/flaws in it it lacks any credibility, but at the same when it wants to the show goes hard - the ending of episode 4 of season 2 oof.
