What watch do you wear?

Mrs just walks in and was like, have you considered a 2nd hand watch? Look for something around 3k?

I was looking at secondhand anyway, you'll always get a ton more and so that's my sign off for something, and I'm going to jump on it. haha At least before she changes her mind!

So a £500 increase in a week from the previous barrier of 2.5k...leave it to the end of Novemeber and you'll have your desired PAM!

200M or 300M. Because I love dive watches, and if I buy one it would have to be able to withstand actual diving (which I have done and want to do again). :)

The only Panerai I like the look of is the 1950 3 day 42mm, but the bit covering the crown would dig into my wrist https://www.swissluxury.com/panerai-watches-luminor-1950-3-days-gmt-power-reserve-automatic.htm

The thing about chronos is that they have an awful lot of places where water can get in, even with screw down pushers etc.

If you want a serious diver, then surely drop the chrono (you did suggest it wasn't vital?). But if it's just because you like the look of divers and of chronos, then have at it!

Suggestions on a postcard with a bit of rationale please. :)
Not a chronograph but if you are after a pure dive watch what about considering a second hand Rolex Deepsea, mint condition pieces can be had for £6k and have a ridiculous 3800m water resistance. Respected brand, very cool, shouldn't loose value, plus nerdy on the tech side of things.

The problem I have with wearing a Rolex is that I really feel the brand has such a bad rep in the UK thanks to so many wannabe's buying them as a sign of wealth over the years that the brand has, in my own personal opinion, become tarnished. Many people react negatively to seeing a Rolex.

Additionally, that model is 44mm and very thick, so doesn't fit my requirements for going under a shirt cuff. Also I only need 300M max resistance I think, as I probably won't dive deeper than 60M or so. :)

EDIT - I do quite like the 2016 Tudor Pelagos.... gets a glowing review too http://www.timelessluxwatches.com/reviews/tudor-pelagos-review

Oris Divers - Fantastic watch but not in the £5k premium category
Omega Seamaster Chronograph - Again not in that £5k premium category unless you for go for something at the over end of the scale such as the Seamaster Plant Ocean Ceragold (a thing of beauty)
Blancpain Fifty Fathoms - They do a lovely chronograph but again too pricey
Breitling - Same perceived image problem as Rolex

This is a tricky one, at the £5k price bracket the combination of 200-300m and chronograph is going to be tough.

Yup, Breitling and Omega get a bit of negative rep from people averse to expensive watches, just like Rolex. Blancpain is rather more under the radar.

It's worth noting the other and older variants of the Sea-Dweller (i.e. non Deep Sea) are 40mm, e.g. the 4000 and the 16600.

I love the look of the Chronos, I do admit! Plus they are waterproof, so as long as you take care to make sure everything is tight it should be ok. :)

Just to be clear, it doesn't "have" to be 5k, that was just to give me extra breathing room... if I get something I am happy with for cheaper then I would be over the moon!

My shortlist at the moment, in no particular order, is:

PS: Anything gold = no way, reminds me too much of a used car salesman!

Water RESISTANT not waterproof! Very different things.

Whilst they're given a depth rating, it guarantees nothing at all. The more points of entry, the more risk there is. But yes, for recreational use and so long as they're maintained and tested regularly etc. you should hopefully be fine (but again, I wouldn't).

I meant resistant, it was a mis-type, chill. I already provided a link above to the general flaky meanings of the various depth measurements so I've hardly forgotten it in the last couple of hours.

Regardless of having more entry points, I trust an Omega Seamaster 300 to not let water in when properly sealed and maintained, as with any decent dive watch of that class.

A quicker reply this time but more worry :(

Dear Mr. xxxxx

I have to apologize, again. It was a big mistake.

Your watch is still at our factory. We will change the glass for you as a warranty claim and send it back to you as soon as possible.

My reply

Thank you for the reply, changing out the glass will be fine as long as the original problem with the crown being detached is repaired too ??

The attached photos show my watch and the original fault.

Mmm think it may be resolved this year :D

Or split the budget and spend it all, one nice all out dive watch and then a second chronograph. :p

Please, stop tempting me. :D

I really am leaning towards the Omega Seamaster Professional Chrono in black for £3k, as it really fits 90% of my requirements. Chrono, 300M, smart and dressy to be worn in any environment, customised movement.

Maybe then I'd think about buying a blue watch separately too. :)

PS: I've already got a Longines Hydroconquest which I guess can function as my rough and tumble watch.

I think this evening I will aim to walk down the high street and try some stuff on.

Well, I went to try a couple of watches on this evening and was quite surprised. The Omega Seamaster 300m Chrono is a porky little bugger, or maybe I'm just so used to my non-Christian that I didn't realise how much pudgyier they are.

I also, for lulz, tried on a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. Lovely watch, but no way is it worth the money, and the bracelet is pretty but has no dive clasp.

The one I didn't get to try, and am now giving serious thought to, is the Tudor Pelagos in Blue. It seems like you are getting an obscene amount of watch for your money, with a high-end in-house movement with 70 hour power reserve, titanium bracelet, genius adjustable strap, and all round awesome craftsmanship.

Normally I'd go for the black but the blue colour is actually very cool, and I don't mean in a fad way... it is different and just incredibly pleasing. I think it is something that will see a lot of casual wear. Will it pass at a black tie party? Nope, but I am very tempted to buy something black and sleek so that I can have both angles covered:

I have read a few moans about the five lines of text on the dial, but I don't mind it at all and I don't think I would even notice it after a week. It's just a beautifully simple dial that I can't stop looking at in appreciation on the photos and YouTube videos that I see. Lume also seems incredible.

Here are a couple of great articles on it:

Just out of interest, what are your guys thoughts on the watch? :)

The 70hr power reserve is really impressive I do admit, but the 5 lines of text, and missing lume at 3 (the lume on the ETA model is just the right width so as to be the total same width with the date window as the marker at 9) is so annoying. It dirties an otherwise clean and symmetrical dial. They could have at least made the block of 5 lines more vertically central. Look at how close to the marker at 6 it is, and the big gap left between hand centre and the top of the text.

Those are the only two reasons that stopped me from swapping to the new model. The ETA model is accurate to +2s a day for me. remarkable timekeeping accuracy really. Just 40hrs often isn't enough, as once you hit hour 36ish without a quick shake, time starts to slow down! Having said that, it doesn't take much to wind it with the rotor. Just a quick shake in a figure 8 motion gains several hours.

You'll enjoy it. So much watch for the money.

That's Tudoir tradition for dive watches. ********* + big markers, can't ever see that changing :p

Interesting viewpoint, thanks mrk.

Have said it a few times in the past and it still stands, I really dislike the hour hand and the indices. Not to my taste.

But hey, watches are a personal thing. It doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks.

It doesn't matter to whether I personally like it, but I am of course interested to know what others think of it as a discussion on its design and specification. That's what the thread is for. :)

I like the ********* design, it's unique and recogniseable.

Lovely watch and as you say it's a hell of a lot of watch of the price.

I'm a big fan of divers and have a couple of blue ones (Oris Date Diver and a much cheaper Orient Mako USA) but the blue on that Tudor is very different to what you normally see, a much flatter/paler blue which really makes it stand out (in a good way).

Would wear well with anything causal or an office suit but I think it could look a little odd with anything too formal i.e black tie (in case that's the sort of thing you do often).

Big screwed links on the bracelet are cool, as if the clasp, only thing I wish had a little more detail was the case back which is very plain.

I have to say I've been waiting for the Steinhart Titanium to get back in stock to get one... However the sore spot of the Stenies are the bracelets, perhaps the money you spend on the Tudor might just be worth it just for that!
