Right guys, I work in "THE LAND OF PURPLE SHIRT GUYS" (clever edit ;)) and we have an apple stand there which is ran by an apple representive.

Been having a few goes on one and they seem to be the dogs. Just want to clear some things up before I take the plunge. BTW - it needs to be a macbook so I can take it to the navy :)

Why would I buy one? This is some of the things the apple guy said:

*No Viruses
*Easy to use
*Faster than windows vista or windows in general
*Do more with a mac regarding all the imaging/video/music

And why wouldn't I buy one? This is what he said:

*Price. (lol)

So what do you lot have to say? Ive never owned an apple before, always been on windows - but Im 17 and willing to be moulded to a new OS/ new way of computers! :D

Also, is there a lot of apps for apple? Theres kajillions for windows!

And what about gaming? I would want to put windows on it with that thing called boot camp or whatever so I could play my games. How would it run vista/xp on a mac? And what macbook would be the best for running games? ( I assume macbook pro?)

And how long have the prices for the macbooks been like that for? Will they come down in price anytime soon? I would have thought so with the new apple air thing coming out.

Sorry for the long post, but theres a lot I need to know before shelling out loads of money for one of them! :D

MacBook pro, yes. Depends what games though...

Negative.

PS. Naming a 'competitor' = Bad. :p

*No Viruses Yep, none yet.
*Easy to use Extremely easy, has a very user friendly interface.
*Faster than windows vista or windows in general Definitely.
*Do more with a mac regarding all the imaging/video/music Absolutely, that's what Macs are designed for.

And why wouldn't I buy one? This is what he said:

*Price. (lol) Very true, but the are worth every penny.

So what do you lot have to say? Ive never owned an apple before, always been on windows - but Im 17 and willing to be moulded to a new OS/ new way of computers! :D Once you've owned a Mac, you wont want to go back as many of us say. Very easy to learn to use and the fact that OS X never crashes is a breath of fresh air from Windows.

Also, is there a lot of apps for apple? Theres kajillions for windows! There's loads, most things you have for Windows, there will be an OS X alternative.

And what about gaming? I would want to put windows on it with that thing called boot camp or whatever so I could play my games. How would it run vista/xp on a mac? And what macbook would be the best for running games? ( I assume macbook pro?) Macs generally aren't designed for gaming, so don't expect it to give amazing performance and high FPS. MacBook Pro would be your best option if you want to game, the MacBook will struggle with demanding games.

And how long have the prices for the macbooks been like that for? Will they come down in price anytime soon? I would have thought so with the new apple air thing coming out. They don't generally drop in price, only if upgrades to the current line come out. Once a new revision comes out they don't sell the older ones. I wouldn't expect to see any updates on the MacBook or MacBook Pro anytime soon, WWDC in June will most likely see them being updated to Penryn processors. So the price will stay for a while yet.

Anything else, shoot.

*Looks at Crysis...* *Looks at MacBook*

Struggle you say? Collapse in a ball of fire, I say. :p

I also saw old generation stuff a few weeks after new stuff had be released on sale in the local purple shirted place. :/

I'm not sure about easy of use tbh, I find itunes is crap and so is safari. they feel very much bloated on the pc. firefox is much better browser.

the overall UI is definately faster compared to vista but i doubt it will match xp if you want robustness at the end of the day.

I'm pretty sure all the mac imaging/video/photo programs are also on windows and probably the same.

you need to consider overall package rather than individual points.

No Viruses isn't strictly true. There are probably some out there but so far Apple have escaped as a small user base in terms of the worlds computer user. There are av products out there for Mac but probably unlucky if you got a virus. Certainly not had any headline grabbing outbreaks/vulnerabilities like Windows has had.

They certainly are very easy to use, coming off xp onto a leopard box, some things are different but still intuitive enough that never got frustrated and "how the **** do you do this" like I do in Office 2007.

Faster then Windows, definitely, OSX Leopard is vastly more efficent with it's resources then Windows is. It can do this as it has to work with a much smaller area of products then Windows as well as the fact that properly written.

Imaging/Music/Video is the heart of the Mac and along with DTP is what has kept the Apple system going through the bad old days. From a committed windows user I have no problem moving an Apple system.

At the moment I have an iPhone, going to get a 15" Mac Book Pro, and a Mac Pro this year. Also going to go with Elgato for a PVR and possibly even an AppleTV.

Theres not as many apps for OSX as Windows, however there are enough out there that you won't really notice. Do you really need 100's of FTP client apps? There are the apps for every purpose there just isn't as wide a range of choice for a particular function. You can get all the important ones that you need.

Bootcamp runs Windows 32bit very well as is effectively booting into Windows natively.

Just remember when it comes to gaming it is at best a dual core 2.6 and 8600GT graphics so no great shakes on the gaming front. Thats if you get a MacBook Pro.

For the macbook then looking at GMA X1300 so think integrated graphics about a 6200/7300/8400 class so really not for gaming.

There certainly not cheap but a lot of people seem to be buying the Apple kit these days specifically to still run Windows as it is way more stylish.

duh they are the same bloated thing on the mac

That of course depends on your definition of bloated then, but from where I am sat, Safari is far from bloated, and nor is iTunes.

What in particular gives you the impression they are bloated?

How does the boot camp work then? 2 partitions for the HDD? Yep, exactly like that, just run the Bootcamp Assistant utility and follow the steps, very easy to do.

How often does a mac crash? Crash? Would like to say never, but maybe once or twice every 2 years.

Go use a Mac then come back and criticise when you have slightly more of a clue what you are on about. I'd suggest your local Apple Store as a friendly place to start.

I suggest you stop being a apple fanboy and grow up a bit tbh

itunes isn't anywhere near as robust compared to winamp or even WMP and hence bloated. Not a performance critcism as such as perhaps that is better on OS X and I hope so as well.

And I quite like the extensions and customisabilty of firefox, beats anything else anyday.

Crash? Mine hasn't crashed in nearly a year since I got it, apps crash more though because apparently people can't code properly anymore. :o

rofl.

I used both, on and off before getting my first iPod. I thus installed iTunes 4.3 or some silly such number and was blown away by it.

The myth of Windows crashing has pretty much gone since Windows 98. The question is what you can't do on a Mac.

Game
Have wide driver/hardware support
Change and upgrade at will
Not paying for the brand name/design.
PC's users shut up (see maddox site)

So have I since my 4g ipod, version 3.6 and it gets more bloated with every release.

We agree to disagree then.

Fanboyism aside he's right though sid.

I can't even get iTunes to run on my PC at the mo but it's a dream on a mac (which is what it was designed to run on in the first place).

I get the impression you haven't used a Mac because you don't seem familiar with the interface or the software.

Seriously give it a go and you will see just how robust it really is. Far better than Windows.

I agree with you about the customisability of FireFox but have you used Safari 3 on Leopard? It's quicker than greased lighting. :p

I actually have a reasonable clue what I'm on about. I'm an IT Support professional with a degree in computer science and plenty of experience in the real world. So put the rolleyes away and come back when you've actually used a Mac properly.

I'll stop feeding the troll now.
