What would you call an average wage?

You are aware that not everybody who lives in Cornwall is from Cornwall.

In fact Cornwall is a great place to observe the so-called "wealth gap". Sure there are Porsches and Ferraris and all sorts buzzing around.

There are also plenty of households that can't even afford a banger.

And there are (as someone else said) those who use finance somewhat irresponsibly.

However I sincerely doubt everybody working in a meat factory is rocking a BMW or the like. Or even most people. That sounds highly implausible to me, frankly. From looking our out own (council) car park, I can tell you there are plenty of old bangers there.

Unless, of course, we're talking about 10 year old BMWs that have been used and abused and pickup up for a couple grand. Because they aren't status symbols, they are cash sinks ;) You may as well set your money on fire. But people do strange things.
I'd say the roads contain far more newer cars than older ones though. I.e. more under 5 than older than that and it's not even a rich area round here.

Right now the road users are about 85% tourists :p

But there are more newer motors around, and I think that probably is a lot to do with finance.

It's a fairly well known thing that a lot of poorer people use finance, and often not in a sensible way. There probably are some min wage people with status cars on finance, and it's not really a good indicator of either affordability or the affluence in general of Cornish people.

At the end of the day, stats don't lie, and Cornwall does not fare well in terms of earnings or house prices. Anecdotal evidence about "BMWs in my car park" does not trump official published stats :p

I would trade it all in for some meaning and actual happiness. :)

Hello friend, I have the answers you are looking for. Please send £100k and I will tell you the secret to a happy and meaningful life (no refunds).

What industry can grads walk into a £100k job? Got to be something sleazy like trading / banking :p

I bet charity would fill a hole in their life. If not, buy a gallardo instead:cry:.

However did you guess? And it's not in this country so at least the tax is nice and low. :D

I was in a busy hotel recently having a breakfast. A waitress had the unenviable task of sorting everyone’s drink orders. Teas, coffees, can you fetch this, and that, soya milk, more toast, excuse me, pardon me, can we add this, we’ve been waiting too long, where are the toilets, can I see the manager I’m not happy with this cold tea… argh!! It was giving me anxiety just watching. Reminded me of how miserable it was doing the same.

Low skilled/paid jobs are definitely not always ‘easy’. Did make me count my blessings.

I'm glad I'm rarely customer facing - I don't know how long I'd put up with that kind of ****. Though there are limits if the service is actually poor but 9/10th of the time it seems to be people who are never happy.

Being a ‘professional and client facing’ is definitely not as gruelling as ‘public customer’ facing, but I also find it draining as you have to spend energy on maintaining an image, softening your sharper edges etc whilst also being at their call and demand. Moving to an ‘internal facing’ role soon and can’t wait.

And also it doesn't really solve life problems as my other posts have pointed out. My needs in life are extremely simple and I'm not flash and have no need to prove myself. I would trade it all in for some meaning and actual happiness. :)
You’re needs evidently aren’t simple whatsoever if you are searching for meaning and happiness (which suggests that you are not actually satiating the entirety of your needs). If your needs were simple, you would identify them and procure the satiation of them.

That’s not an attack, mind. My needs aren’t simple either! :p

My plumbers / electricians are on 36k. Add the callout rota to that and they're approaching 40k. Do a bit of overtime and 45-50k is possible. The industry is screaming for people at the moment, I get calls from recruiters almost every day asking if I know anyone looking for work. Basics are now moving up to 40k to reflect this.

I'm in a difficult spot atm, I'm ready to move up in the world and want more money, but my company is being careful. They're one of the best in the industry and have invested quite a bit in me so I don't really want to leave and give them the finger despite being able to make a significant jump in salary elsewhere.
Great opportunity to talk to them about it, if the markets moved on and they have invested a lot in you then they'd probably be eager to retain you. Costs nothing to ask anyway :)

I was on a group cycling holiday in South Africa a couple of years ago and there was 12 of us. The waitress took all of our drinks, starters and mains orders at the same time and memorised it all, no note pad and got everything spot on with no mistakes. Everyone was stunned

Given that you work in some kind of IT related role, have you thought about working remotely for an employer who is further afield? Saves getting stuck in any "BCOS CORNWALL" low wage trap.

But then how will Foxeye be able to complain on overclockers?

@FoxEye have you ever opened up yourself to any opportunities beyond an area that you admit has low opportunities for what you do? Im hesitant to ask as I'm sure you've raised multiple threads on this before...

HGV industry is really good at the moment. Lots of agencies and places starting to pay up to £19 a hour and £20+ on weekends. Considering you can become a HGV driver in under 3 months it is always something that is handy to have as there is always work both part time and full time. People scaremonger about automation but that is at least 20 years away yet.

I thought the issue was the backlog in driving exams? Good time to go back if you left the industry though.
