What would you have done?

Small purchase with cashback, made up story about no pin. That'd be enough IMHO for getting the manager/superviser over, they can then decide on the name thing so you're not accused of being "racist". Just tell the guy "Sorry mate, it's asking for the pin, but my supervisor will be able to over-ride it so you can sign instead".

Surely you've been trained and told the store policy on this?

I would have turn to the customers and said give me a beat
"A swoop doop swoopdy doop, say a swoop swoop swoop doopidy doop"

Then turned to the other staff and say give me some tunes
"A hip hip dop, a dippy di dop and dip dip dippidy dop"

Then turned to the customer and say hit me with rhythm
"A wap dab dab, a dippy dap say a wap wap wap dippy de dap"

So by that time you've got a "swoop dop dab, a swoopidy dab dab, a dippy dap doop"

then I would have got another work mate to hit him with an inverted urinal.

HTH

hahaha, sounds like a plan.

For a more lazy approach you could just played Scatman John - I'm a Scatman and stared at him blankly until he left.

I've been working behind cashdesks of several stores and you are perfectly entitled to ask for an ID from the customer if you suspect the card is not his/hers. You might feel a bit stupid to ask but personally I wouldn't take it as an insult because youre only doing your job and I would appriciate it that the store is taking precautions for other peoples moneys safety :)

Surely you must have had training for this. If I was suspicious I would have called over a manger. Have you asked your management what you should do if a similar event occurs again.

Couldn't you simply of asked for another form of ID to confirm he was the owner of the card. Driving licence maybe?

I had this happen when my Chip and Pin refused due to a dodgy chip on the card.

Had to sign but before the cashier accpeted the sale she checked my Driving Licence just to make sure I was the owner of the card.

I didn't know AMEX had started chip and pin my AMEX doesn't have one.

My Amex was one of my first cards to go C&P and that must have been a while back as I got rid of it about 4/5 years ago.

As for the OP, if I was suspicious I certainly wouldn't have given him the card back just like that. Way to help prevent fraud! You could have asked for some other form of ID to corroberate his signature, and thereby his name (using the lack of PIN as an excuse), or pretended there was a problem with the till & called your manager over.

I think you need a bit more training.

My BS detector has just exploded!!
I don't know how gullible the OP thinks I am but his 'story' is as pathetic as some of his views/opinions (just searched for some of his other posts)!

I've had one of these before. I suspected the card wasn't theirs and just asked 'how do you pronounce your name again'?

Seeing as they then couldn't even say their own name, they ran out the shop, leaving the card.
