What would you have done?

Small purchase with cashback, made up story about no pin. That'd be enough IMHO for getting the manager/superviser over, they can then decide on the name thing so you're not accused of being "racist". Just tell the guy "Sorry mate, it's asking for the pin, but my supervisor will be able to over-ride it so you can sign instead".

Surely you've been trained and told the store policy on this?

Also just remembered that you can't get cashback on an Amex card! I don't have one and I know that, so surely the customer, if it was his card, would have known that he can't get cashback on it?

I'd have said there was an issue with the transaction and that you need a manager to authorize it. Call over the manager and let them decide (as no doubt they will have the experience and common sense to determine if the issue needs to be taken further).

I would certainly have reported it after the shift and seen if security had picked the customer up on CCTV. If so then the store could take it up with AMEX and the police.

This is the classic test to make sure a card is valid, he'd be running off to the sell the card details or buy something from the net as we speak

you'll know for next time

Secret line?

"I have an itch in my sock."?

When my brother worked at Sainsbury's they had a message they would use over the tannoy if there was a fight or something.

Was something similar to this, paraphrased;

'Staff announcement, section 52 please section 52'

Which basically meant, all male members of staff to the tills now!

i didn't think you could get cashback on an amex card at a till, thought it was debit cards only.

You can't get cashback on any credit card afaik.

I thought this as well actually. Given who the OP is and the convenient story about a brown person I'm calling bs.

You can't get cashback on an AMEX. When did I say you could?

Hmmm a poster who is known for 'not liking foreigners' and this happens to him.

OK.

You got something stuck up your rear end Wicksta or you just trying to take a cheap dig?
Have you actually read the thread or is all you seeing is, I hate foreigners - get out my white country!
And yes, I do support BAE Systems. When I graduate, I want to be recruited by them!!

If it was a white male with an asian surname I would've still made this thread. Stop trying to make this thread about your kind of people. If you think I'm talking BS, kindly leave the thread. You're not wanted here.

How can you be sure he was Pakistani?

Couldn't he be Bangladeshi, or just a REALLY tanned white guy? Or was he definitely asian because of his accent?

Supermarket is in a half predominantly pakistani area, who cares if he wasn't pakistani, that's not the point. Take this PC BS elsewhere.

Oh, ok, so the chances are he was Pakistani. But you don't need to be so rude.

1. It's not BS
2. I wasn't talking about being correct.
3. You should care if he wan't Pakistani. I was only asking because, as I said, he may have been a tanned white guy, which would be a suitable explanation for his name.

A tanned white guy would *not* look like an Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi male.

There should be a store procedure. If not if you're uncertain you could always have asked for ID. In our shop we aren't allowed to swipe a card that has chip and pin. Any cards that don't have a chip and pin have to be authorised by Streamline.
