Emo - short for Emotional hardcore, term originated in the eastern U.S. in the late 80's to describe the hardcore punk music style developed by bands like minor threat and fugazi. Guy called ian mckaye started it all basically.

back when I was at college we called would have called the kids that think they are emo now "goose goths" kinda sota half goths ish.
