Then you've not worked out how to measure fuel economy accurately.

Well considering people in the owners club feel the same way.....

It was measured in the correct way of brimming the tank and recording mileage.

I think what's possibly even more LOL is the fact you get 28mpg out of a 1.8 Diesel Focus.

What the hell is the point in that? I get more out of my 1.8T around town, nevermind 70mph cruises.

Why on earth would you put up with a horrible engine like that if you don't even get 30MPG out of it?

edit - Oh, we're not talking about the Focus :p

Do tell me more about how the Monaro breaks the laws of physics and has positively affected by increasing wind resistance.

OH WELL THEN I GUESS IT'S A MAGIC CAR.

Maybe I should write to the papers then telling them how my engine is able to conjoure up an extra 4mpg at 10mph more while making an extra 50lb/ft of torque in that 300rpm space.

It's the same principle as doing 10mph in 4th gear isnt economical, doing 70 in 6th isnt as economical for me. I can't gain any speed at 70mph in 6th. Hell I can't even hit top speed in 6th.

Peak fuel economy is not at the point of peak torque.

How many rpm is your engine doing at 10mph in 4th?

How many rpm is your engine doing at 70mph in 6th?

I didn't say it was as I don't hit peak torque at 1900rpm.

4th at 10mph will stall the engine.

70mph is approx 1600rpm and 80mph is approx 1900rpm. It's technically a 5 speed box with an overdrive.

Well thats good, so as a first step we've established then that its nothing like doing 10mph in 4th. Thats good, we can work on that.

The greater air resistence at 80mph will mean you wont gain 4mpg by going from a 1600rpm cruise to a 1900rpm cruise.

How does that make a difference?

You will get much much much worse "miles per gallon" doing 10mph in 4th than you will doing 70mph in 6th :p

Well obviously that extra 50lb/ft outweights the increase in wind resistance....

I didn't realise you were an expert with the LS2 engines power curve and the T56's gear ratios.

Maybe go at 90mph for even more mpzz!!

Or fit a turbo? Then more lb/ft so EVEN MORE MPG!

I didn't realise you were an expert with the LS2 engines power curve and the T56's gear ratios.

You don't need to be an expert to know that the faster you go, the more wind resistence required and more the fuel consumed to maintain speed.

It's magic... Golf 1.4TFSI... you get better economy at 80mph than you do at 70mph in 6th gear too... MAGIC CAR!

It's to do with where the engine's sitting in it's torque band... it can compensate for the increased air resistance/friction. Depends entirely on the car/engine/gearbox combination and of course it's not something you see on many cars.

Engine BSFC varies with load and rpm. Extra load will also burn fuel at a higher rate but you also have to consider that higher burn rate of fuel is also covering the distance faster.... Quirks can appear.
