When a Console is better than your PC...

I have looked with interest in this thread, I was expecting to be absolutely bashed by my post, turns out there seems to quite a few of you in the same boat. The Xbox 1X has really shaken things up, I have decided to not to upgrade my PC at all and settle with what I have, maybe with Vega, though more likely Volta, there will be a worth while upgrade from what I have (r9 290), realistically thinking about it, I bought my 290 in 2013 for £290(ish), it's now 2017 and cards that retail for similar prices are not much better, that's appalling if you really think about it.

I have no idea if the new Xbone will be better than my PC, it aint out yet and console makers make promises that they cant deliver, for example patching old games to run well (60fps, or even a solid 30 in the case of the xbone).

What I do like about my PC is that I'm in control of the resolution and frames :)

I am looking forward to what it does though!

XB1 if it gets support, as it's a highly optimised closed gaming system will take the absolute urine out of a £500 gaming PC, zero conflicts/driver aches, just plug it into the TV, turn on-play end of.

And another thing. Other than Tomb Raider and Metro Last Light I'd say no games I've bought have looked as good to me as Uncharted, Last of Us and God of War 3. I've not seen Horizon Zero Dawn but that looks like a standout game too. I do game at 1440p G Sync IPS on a good PC too.

Defending PC gaming is always gonna be important to me because its my go-to platform above anything else. But its not nearly as black and white as it used to be.

I'm amazed how well Crysis 2 with the MaLDoHD 4.0 mod looks up against Uncharted 4 and Horizon.

Uncharted 4 has incredible physics and particle effects though.

Though Crysis seems better. Cannot get over all this time now I had finally completed it several days ago. I wish Crysis 2 had a big boss ending. Was very dissapointed to some degree for the ending of 2.

Let alone how wonderful Quake Champions looks and plays.

anyone know what budget it would genuinely take to do 4k/60 (with dips as I would assume the one x isn't going to be 60 stable) medium settings?

curious as ive never really used the mid range and below cards like the 1060/470.

Medium? I would say 1070

If you want a decent PC that will last at least 2 years, you need to spend a minimum of £800, there is no way you can get a decent PC for any less unless you buy second hand and/or cheap out on MB, RAM and whatever else you need.

yeah that's what i was roughly thinking, mainly got a friend that wants to leave consoles behind but can't afford a high end system. the Xbox x does look like half decent value for money, as in struggling to piece together a build within his budget that would genuinely outperform it.

Yup it just isn't doable. Not to mention throw in a monitor and you are talking about an additional £300 unless he uses his current TV.

pretty sure he would be using his tv as his flat doesn't really have space for a desk+monitor etc.

damm, I gotta say for all the pcmr meme stuff for a second....this is (depending on actual results when released) a pretty incredible little box for the money then.

I'm cautious as the cpu is still very weak, and even overclocked in the ps4 pro struggles badly with some games to maintain 30fps, but I wonder if this hardware level dx12 is actually that beneficial?

"PC master race" meme can still apply for a lot of things tbh:

- mods (although I can't see this sticking around for much longer either, certainly not the big ones anyway i.e. just look at the news for gta 5 recently, take 2 have pretty much stopped any further mod support for it now)
- 21.9
- 60+ FPS in every game
- g/free sync
- generally cheaper keys overall (however, I've seen some pretty good deals on games for the consoles lately.....), although recently I would say that PC games are starting to approach console prices.....

You can also thank brexit + one brand dominating the CPU and GPU market for many years now + typical UK gouging for the way prices are these days, hopefully vega will get some price wars happening but I wouldn't hold your breath.....

As for dx 12, it is a god send for low end/weak/old CPUs combined with pretty powerful GPUs (more so for AMD) especially for min fps, I imagine the result will be even better on the xbox 1 x since it is a closed platform i.e. only one hardware combination to code for

Regarding the ps 4 pro, the CPU probably doesn't help matters at all but I think it is largely just because the pro hasn't sold well so it hasn't got much love from the developers and is why there isn't a great deal of difference in a lot of the "pro" versions, not to mention the delay for the pro to get the upgraded versions..... Hopefully the xbox 1 x will sell well and developers will then have 2 more powerful platforms to develop for e.g. CD project red said that they wouldn't ever do an upgraded version of the witcher 3 for the ps 4 pro but after the xbox 1 x was announced, they have now said they will be delivering an upgraded version of the game for both the platforms....

I do love the PC master race memes though! :D

Especially any with our Lord and savior Gabe!!! :D :p

our glorious lord and saviour all hail lord gabe!

being honest...some of the memes are funny as hell...

but yeah I do agree pc is a much better platform in general, but to 'average' games that don't care about refresh rates and gsync and mods etc it's hard to convince them of any benefits.

Yeah don't get me wrong, console gaming can be a lot of fun, and it is good for the money if not counting online subscription fees and sometimes overpriced games. I even have a Switch which looks quite decent visually on the TV and looks great in handheld mode. Nintendo knows that at least 60fps is important as well for the more moderately/faster paced games, which is always a good thing.

Nothing beats having a mid/high end PC though for that smoother experience with overall faster frame rates, along with the high visuals of course.

I'd take console gaming a lot more seriously if they had full on mouse and keyboard support. I just don't like playing most games with a controller unless it's a fighting game or something.

Everyone is on the same level though, once you get used to the controller.

I mean, there's always going to be pros that are far better than I am, weather they are using keyboard and mouse on PC to play Battlegrounds or controller on Xbox to play Battlefield 1.

I prefer using a controller for most games to be honest. Particularly third person games
