When are you going fully electric?

What would you do in my situation?:
- current car: '16 plate petrol astra with 20k mileage, excellent condition.
- desired fuel type: I've been following EVs since leaf/zoe times (I test drove the original leaf but hated the grabby brakes, so bought the astra instead which has been fantastic), so fairly decent understanding, I could handle going full EV, but I don't actually care, so petrol/hybrid/phev/ev is all fair game.
- trips: mostly 2-5 miles shop/tip runs, need ability to get to the hospital and back 70 mile round trip, family visits 200 miles each way done on separate days but no destination charging.
- driveway: yes (but if I move maybe not idk), no charger currently.
- unusual requirement: dust mite allergy means leather seats mandatory, avoid fabric as much as possible. has the benefit of being more durable, so spending more is ok if the car lasts longer.
- budget: because I don't do a lot of miles I don't want to spend much, roughly 15-20k for something 1-3 years old (included selling the astra for ~8k ish), but leather seats tends to be a premium option which makes it tricky and even premium trims are going fabric (or recycled material with unknown dust mite characteristics, I ask them but they never know, so avoid).

My current thinking: I could run the astra into the ground given it's good condition it might last ages, or I could replace it now to avoid potential bills (but what with), or try going carless (concerned about ncd expiring), or run the astra longer to delay if better options might appear soon. It would be a straightforward decision if the astra electric had leather seats, but it doesn't so rip.

Our car is a 54 plate.. Yeah.. It's that old.

Everytime I think "should I change it" someone kicks some sense into me and says no.

The amount of cash getting a new car is just too much for me

Will run it into the ground.

Basically a short to medium term hire car. All the same T&Cs as the main car - monthly payments are slightly higher as it's short term but gets through any "gap" waiting for the EV to be delivered.

They appear to be pool cars and you (if expressed interest) get notified if one comes in. Downside is you have to be quick and have no choice over what it is - take it or leave it !
hmm, I think I'll roll the dice with the prices that we've been quoted. We have a Kia Sportage that I'm going to ditch to webuyanycar when the new on arrives, only issue in the meantime is that I believe the turbo or the gearbox are on the way out, just need to hope that neither goes pop before the new one arrives.

I did ABRP with a mid spec (58KW) ID.3, Bristol to Leeds and back (430~ miles), needed a 16 minute stop on the way up, and 2 25 minute stops on the way down (starting with 100% and aiming for 10% at home), with about 2hr of driving between the 2nd and 3rd stops.
I generally need to stop for the loo/stretch my ageing legs more often than that, so would end up doing 2 15 minute stops each way, although I always end up stopped for longer at services waiting for my wife and daughter to faff about.

Sounds about right :)

I ended up stopping our charge early last time we stopped "to charge" on the way home from Wales. By the time the dog had stretched her legs (and had a ****), the kids had been to the toilet, and they'd all grabbed something to eat, we had more than enough to get back, and I wasn't keen on paying 79p/Kw any more than necessary! :p

Had a call from the delivery company to say they’re delayed.

The car doesn’t have any charge and they haven’t been able to find any working fast chargers as they’re in use/broken.

Hopefully not a sign of things to come :P

Just been delivered. He had to wait a couple of hours but all dropped off.

It’s a very smart car :-)

Looks great - what were the final financials on it @MrRockliffe ? And how much was insurance? Still very tempted to drop the E43 and cash-in --- MOT, Service and Tax due November!

£408 a month, 12000 miles, £1100 upfront fully maintained (+ broker fee) over 2 years.

Insurance was £150 back from the BMW with about 6 months left, so about 700 a year I think. Will be going down again when I move.

She says on Nov 2nd change tariff to iGo and then wait 4 to 6 weeks, hopefully it does go quicker.
When I ordered my charger they gave me a date a month away and another 2 months away neither I could do.
I rang up and a bloke said "How does next Saturday sound?".

I've done similar, bought this car to hopefully last me until death but not because I've been scared, it's because I've always been a technology geek and how we Granny drive it just seemed the right thing to do.
Hopefully I don't regret it.

Not sure why it should take that long.
When I moved to Octopus with SMs (was a customer previously but without SMs) they saw readings within a few days. At that point I clicked the link to Go they had already sent me in my email (asked for that) and I was switched on their system same day.

There is another step with IGo in that you need to do the test session which I had assume happened almost immediately.
Once your SM is seen you could ask to move to Go (rather than IGo) and they should be able to do that same day.
IGo is better, slightly cheaper, slightly more fixed hours and chance of extra hours), but Go gets you a big reduction in costs vs normal tariff for the 5 hours 0:30-5:30am so you can charge the car on a fixed time schedule at a cheap rate if IGo is going to take that long.

Edit, just thought, are your SMs Gen 1 or Gen 2, I think Gen 1 can take a chunk longer to move than Gen 2 as I believe it takes some extra manual intervention.

The insurance is still rough isn't it....I got an xkr-s quote for 450 the other day! But road tax is 765yr....

ID7 looks nice - we need to see cabin colour, still very exclusive on Cambs roads, only seen one.

yes - he needs to run an id7 quote for his postcode - I'd had a whatif id7 487, 320iX 430, lol tesla m3std £860 so id7's consistent

What the actual **** am I reading

@MrRockliffe keen to hear your thoughts, thats a LOT of car for the money. Still not sure I can justify an EV though. No off-street parking :/

It is very very nice. But in terms of outright build quality, the BMW wipes the floor with it.

First time a car drove past while driving I was like WTF WAS THAT oh just a car.

The main thing is that feature wise, there’s nothing you need as an extra.

Standard you get matrix lights, 360 camera, adaptive cruise, interior lighting, HUD and a few other bits.

You’re not that far away from me so you’re welcome to pop over for a comparison of the two

I wouldn’t buy a BEV if I couldn’t charge at home. 6.7p vs 70p+ for a quick charger.

I just got quoted 650 on an BMW M6 so I'm loathed to pay 1k for an ID7. The reason I ask is because I can get one for 850 a month before tax inclusive of insurance, so it's good to know they're still quite expensive to insure - helps my man maths :D

Morning all, for the past couple of days I've been getting a phone notification "we couldn't control your EV charge" from the Octopus app.

It's still appears to have charged up overnight, but rather than being continuous there is a blip in the middle where charging went to zero.

Is it just temporary lost comms?

There’s 7kW public chargers around for 35-40p. 70p is what you pay when you need a few kWh as quickly as possible and are willing to pay for it.

If someone is getting an EV without home charging then I’d first look at any work-charging option, then anywhere local where you can slot charging into your weekly routine. Maybe try a service like co-charger close to where you live, work or visit. I know lots of people doing this where it’s still cheaper than petrol (just not as cheap as home charging)

It’s normal for the car to start and stop charging during all the slots, it doesn’t follow the half hour slots exactly.

I’ve had an entire half hour slot at 9pm where the car only added 500wh - happy days as far as I’m concerned.

I get the notification pretty much every time and the car charges fine.
