When are you going fully electric?

I guess the question you need to ask yourself is in a typical year (unlike last year) how many times do you travel more than 80 miles from home? and of that number, how will having to stop for a charge affect you?

Yeah I, like many others, will be worrying about the long journeys more than I need to. Out of the 20k I do each year, 31 each way every weekday is driving to work, a few 10 miles or less trips to local shops, walking spots etc and then no more than 6 journeys per year where i do between 100-200 miles to visit family. We had a one off last month with the father in laws funeral in Cornwall which was a 465 mile trip each way which would have been more difficult on an EV. Apart from one stop for a coffee and toilet break I drove continuously. That made it long enough trip as it was a 8 and half hour drive. That was a one off though.

I really like the Ioniq 5, I have never considered a Hyundai before as they have always seemed bland and generic but I love the styling. I would order one but with 3 kids ideally we need a 7 seater for school runs and general load carrying ability. Currently the only 6-7 seater that I like the look of is the Model X but at £104k it's hard to justify on a car the kids will trash.
The Tesla Model Y is coming to the UK later this year with a 3rd seating row option.

Yeah, might be an option but I already have a M3LR so it's a bit too similar. Hopefully we'll see some larger EV's being released soon. (my wife drives an MPV)

I wouldn’t bank on the Model Y coming to the U.K. this year. The factory isn’t even built yet and we are already going into month 5. Without a doubt they will be concentrating on producing LHD versions first.

We were months behind the rest of the LHD markets in Europe to get the Model 3. The only way I can see the Model Y coming to the U.K. this year would be if they had capacity in the China factory to make RHD cars when European LHD production moves to Berlin. Even then it will no doubt be small volumes right at the end of the year.

Plastic quality in the ioniq wil be interesting to see,
with the cameras : didn't see if the rear view mirror is also a screen ? with those large C pillars - let's have some innovation in more inteior light, please, manufacturers.
but, more generally, more cameras will facilitate the rear facing seating position safety and science fiction have long time been promising.

The plastics are the same ‘quality’ as the ones they do now. So about the same as the iD3 and not as nice as Audi.

The solar roof won’t be available on standard order cars but the full-length panoramic roof looks like light won’t be an issue.

Basically this is Hyundai/Kia just maintaining that lead over the manufacturers they opened up 3 years ago with the first Ioniq and the Kona/eNiro. Sure, it’s not Tesla, but when you look at the iD4 and Enyaq with their 2.5 - 3.6 miles per kWh efficiency and optional 100kW charging you can see that they’re playing catch-up.

Yeah Hyundai do seem to have a decent lead, it's like the ID3/4 was built to just about out compete the existing offerings but not the new wave which is launching only a few months after it. The market is just moving so quickly at the moment its fantastic to see.

Also just noticed that Tesla must have lowered the price of the model 3 after the government grant got decreased so its a tad over 40k just like it has been for a while now, interestingly though a lot of their stock is still the older price of 43k which seems odd!

Just for the chance to catch up with Robert and Jonny's videos, definitely on my list but I can see these being pain to get hold of for some time.

When I saw the press launch for the car I said it looked too expensive for a Hyundai but I take that back. It's pretty clear this is substantially better than the ID4 and overall a pretty good package.

I saw that, was it just the SR+ that dropped back to £41k? I don't remember that the LR was previously but its £48.5k now. I don't see any SR+ cars on their inventory and the LR's all look to be priced correctly?

This German video has the Ioniq 5 charging at 190kW. Which is quite special.

Has anyone noticed that there seems to be some confusion as to the size of the battery pack on the AWD car they were all testing?

Some say 72kW and some say 77kW.

Yeah looks like it's just the SR+ that's been discounted, the others are still 3k more than they were.

Yeah looks like all the SR+'s from the inventory have gone now, they move so quickly on their site. They can be up there for less than an hour or so quite often before they're snapped up.

watching the ioniq 5 video, the motorised 2nd seats does seem a gimmick, additional weight/costs/reliability, something, frankly, like front electric seats,
(adjusted once a year for mot ?) I'd prefer if manufacturers spent the money on audio system

ioniq5 400V charging is less efficient - now looked at the patent : https://uspto.report/patent/app/20190023136, https://patents.justia.com/patent/10358041

yes if you are charging at a higher voltage, you get current/charge into the car faster (without boiling the cable, like the national grid high voltages)
but why would you convert 400v to 800V ? as opposed to just being able to split the battery pack into two parallel cell blocks you charge at 400V ?
otherwise if you genuinely boost (buck convertor) 400-800v then there must be inefficiency.

I really do like it. The retro Renault 5 crossed with audi quattro kind of look combined with what looks like awesome specs make this a top contender for my next vehicle in a couple of years.

I do like the styling, but will be looking at the Ioniq 6 (Coupe) after the current Ioniq, unless Tesla release a Model 2, or drop the price of the Model 3 down a good chunk once they are making them in .de

I really hope they have the efficiency of the current car, that is what I appreciate the most such a small amount of energy for such a great amount of range. Something they should lead with.
