When are you going fully electric?

That is quite a leap from their current standing of less than 1 in 100!

He might just do it.

Tesla are light years ahead of everyone else. I'm not talking about building a car, I'm talking about building the next generation of car. The technology built into a model 3 is pretty incredible.

My friend can pretty much control everything through his app.........the app for my etron barely even connects lol and when it does I can do all of two things on it. It's really quite pathetic.

I can only image what FSD will be like in 2030.

For many, though, the 'next generation of car' is to not have a car at all. I don't see people travelling in the same kind of way in 2030. That's probably a conversation for another thread, though.

You are confused/misinformed the Model 3 has 910Kg, the Model S isn't rated at all, and the Model X is 2,250Kg. No idea what Jpaul is on about.

Indeed you are right. The model S is zero tow weight.

Tesla Model S Towing options
Tesla do not offer a towing option for the Model S, or offer a tow hook or tow hitch. Tesla did not even submit the car for "type approved" for towing and therefore it is generally considered against law to do so. There are however some after market products that can be fitted that either allow equipment such as bike racks that require a tow hook/tow hitch to be fitted, or offer a full blown tow hook/tow hitch that they claim to have had approved by the local authorities

Indeed they are talking about fleets of self drive cars parked up in yards all over the country and you just book/hire a car for each journey you are going to make a bit like the bike things in London.

Nobody will drive themselves unless you are one of those old fuddy duddies who wants to manually drive an old classic like an ICE M3.

Yeah absolutely. That will obviously mean FAR fewer cars on the road, so maybe the 50% being Tesla isn't as exciting as some investors might hope for.

lol - the obvious answer - it was probably a model X then ... we live near a gymkana site , so lots of the hoi-paloy

Thanks all.

Looks like the 2 options I have is keep current car or just buy another diesel and see what happens in the longer term. I. E. 5+ years.

I had looked at the Superb hybrid but it basically is a 1.4l petrol engine when towing so not great.

There are still some decent hybrids with big engines and 2700-3500Kg towing weights for the horsey fraternity.

Sadly though Volvo has given up on horsebox towing with their entire range and they dont do a car which will tow more than 2,000kgs anymore.

This issue did my my shortlist of ev or hybrid cars very short as i needed 2,700kgs towing minimum, ideally 3,000+

Ended up with

Porsche Cayenne Hybrid
Audi Q7 hybrid
BMW X5 45e
Merc GLE hybrid
VW Touareg R hybrid

Went with the Merc GLE in the end.

Porsche got silly expensive one i tick the options I wanted and was approaching £100k
Audi Q7 are boring and had one before so fancy a change
BMW X5 45e - serious contending but just cant get over how ugly it looks (yet)
Merc GLE - superbly equipped, didnt need to add any extra once i selected premium plus
VW Touareg R Hybrid - very tempted but had 3 Touregs now over the years and fancied a change.

Every else in the hybrid/ev market like the Jaguar i pace was dismissed due to the towing issue.

What would you like to control with the Etron's app?

The two main things would be

1. The app actually connects to the car
2. Notification when charging has finished

Comparing the audi app to the teslas is a bit like comparing a worm to veyron. The Teslas is so much better, you almost can't even class them in the same category.

There's a few things I would like though. The ability to fault find and see the status of the windows and doors would be nice.

Anyone in Birmingham ditching their diesels before June? I'm after a new ride but debating my choice a lot more now... It's a rarity I'm that far inside so potentially might just take the £8 hit.

Tesla S & X distinction - largely down to spotting the door frame distinction for the gull wing doors ? it's premium gene pool, is, otherwise, not so evident ?

trailers afaik - It's not the aero though, with the trailer, that kills the ev range, its the non uniform loading that the trailer puts on the electric motors, and delivering that torque is giving reduced efficiency in the electronics; the regen algorithms too, would need some 'training'.

You are dragging a parachute. Of course it’s aerodynamics

Surprised the Audi app is so bad. I currently have the ICE VW Touareg and VW is the same group and with their app i can see where my car is parked, all its journeys, fuel economy, any faults, status of door locks and whether windows are opened or closed. I can lock or unlock the car remotely and close or open all the windows. I can even set geo fencing so I get an alert if the car has moved. All very impressive and I had assumed standard on the high end VW now so assumed Audi would be the same.

If I had gone for the winter pack I could have even set the car to warm up while I eat breakfast on cold mornings.

It is but same with ICE cars but interesting it hurts EV much more than ICE. With my v6 touareg I get around 33 mpg around town and country roads and this drops to 24-25mpg when towing so you are only losing 25%, maybe 33% of range depending on load.

EVs seem to be 50% no matter whose EV it is.
