When are you going fully electric?

How far are manufacturer ranges off real world usage? Teslas are all on a six month wait.....I can get a Polestar 2 LR (301 miles quoted) more or less immediately for the same money.
When people drive the WLTP cycle is when they will be ‘real world’.

Ive got a choice of chargers as below, any advice appreciated. I have solar and I am on Octopus Agile currently. Got a MG on order for my wife, was thinking that the Hypervolt would be best?

Phone signal isnt so hot where I am so wifi would be better, otherwise I would have gone with the Ohme

Of those, I’d have no issues recommending the hypervolt, even though for a lot of the functionality you do need connection to their servers (just for configuration, once set it’s then standalone) but it’s surprisingly neat, hides the cable really well (has a recess to neatly allow the cable to be wrapped around it) and does have solar integration.. we’ve had one for 2 years, and I know 3 other people who’ve bought them, mainly based on looks/neatness (have a choice of colours), and the iOS/android apps are good.. small things like having different lighting modes, ability to lock/unlock / schedule ‘ adjust charging current etc are all easy through the app.. it’s better at scheduled charging than our car is, and was a god send when on Octopus go, but as we are on Intelligent Octopus, we don’t need that now…

Howver, if I was getting in to more solar/battery stuff, the Zappi would probably be my choice (as someone mentions above), it’s much larger/uglier, but they have a nice range of energy control products that all integrate together, al though to get solar with internet access for stats etc, it’s not cheap….

I have the older style Ohme. It's 2.5 years old and looks like **** due to exposure to the elements. The screen has lines going across it where the plastic has been exposed to the sun. Screen cannot be read during the day. Charger still works however. The main problem has been the software tbh. It's been flaky. Some of the features I've found just don't do what I want it to or expected it to do either. There's no option to just run it in purely 'non-smart' mode once it has connected with the car or while it still knows about the car. Only way I've found to do this is to either set up a car with no API that has a larger battery or you can contact Ohme and tell them to reset it all back to factory settings.

Part of the problem I think is API's manufacturers offer. Without knowing/understanding all the technical details I think it all needs to be standardised so Smart Chargers wont need to have custom software per car/per vehicle manufacturer.

Ohme have added new features over time and their customer support is good however. I've reported an issue to them and comms were good, and the issue fixed pretty quickly.

ohme even emailed me to check charger was okay when it went offline once. RCD had tripped. Mines been superb for 2.5 years thankfully not too much Sun where it is but can see that concern.

Well i4 getting ordered this afternoon. Apparently we’re at risk of losing or major culls to car scheme at work so was recommended to jump in now when there’s a decent deal on offer, some I’m “safe” for another 3 years + it’s lead time.

Waiting game now

We've got an Easee for my wife's Cupra Born. I can confirm "it just works" as it should. We are on the (now unavailable) EDF tariff with cheap rates after 9pm, so when charging is required we just plug in and leave it, it sorts out the charging automatically as required (the notifications ping up on the phones so we see it start/stop etc).
It's going so well, that when my lease is up in about a month, I'll be on a Mini-e as well.

One thing to be aware of is your installer. Ours is a new estate with lots of BEV owners so we were lucky enough to get recommendations, but the kit the guy had to use to properly test costs them quite a bit of cash, and the certification process for the installer is lengthy too. It's not something that any old electrician who works in home electrics should be doing for you. It was something like;
  • Groundworks and new high voltage line 1hr
  • Wiring up to charger 1hr
  • Testing idle, Testing charging, testing remote shutoff (from your phone), testing Auto-Shutoff when full, testing error shutoffs etc etc, 4 hrs

Any competent (meaning qualified these days) electrician can install them, you don’t need a EV charging specialist. There isn’t really anything especially about them.

The only ‘new’ elements to it are the DNO notification which is just a form and the functional tests which take minutes with an add on to the tester they already have. The certification is the same any any other electrical job.

If they are up to date with the regs which they should be if they are competent, they shouldn’t have any problem doing the work. They should also RTFM for anything they are installing for the first time.

I suppose the only difference is that some charger manufacturers will not sell them before the installer has done a couple of hours online training on how to commission the charger from a software perspective. All the good wholesalers stock them these days and they can just be picked up off the shelf.

The extra qualifications were an OLEV requirement for grant funding, that’s fallen away because the grants no longer exist.

Anyone here have the Model Y performance?

Looking to order one soon and seriously considering the p over the normal dual motor just for the odd occasions when you want to have a little bit of fun.

The only thing that concerns me is the ride comfort so was looking for real world opinions, I'm willing for it to be “sporty” but not rock hard uncomfortable daily drive

It is firmer than your average SUV but it’s got ~500HP. I don’t have one but I have driven and LR and I know they have changed the suspension since it launched in the U.K. so an older model may not be the same as being delivered now.

Pretty much every Tesla centre has one to test drive, go and take one out.

I’d expect a refresh to get the new model 3 treatment sooner rather than later.

The local one to me had a dual motor but not the P, will try them again next week but was hoping there was some real word experience with the specific model.

The refresh seems to be due late 2024 i wont be able to wait that long unfortunatly

I'd imagine it has the same suspension as the other versions. That's pretty much how it works with the 3 now, it's kinda hard on the 3, but on the P that fits imho. It's not rock hard race mode you get on Golf Rs etc

It’s not rock hard at all. Since they added comfort suspension it’s been great.

is there an imminent highland upgrade to Y with 3's compliant suspension, and the better seats; ( for space is ID7 competitive more stylish/dynamic alternative )

I don't but there's not that much difference in the performance in reality. Check the Carwow vids on YT for a comparison so maybe consider the LR + the acceleration boost upgrade.

Tbh “upgrades” are harder to get approved vs different models. The difference between the performance and the Lr is £2 a month

Must be annoying buying a car and not knowing what version you going to get..

Usually the issue is the other way round, they only have the all singing all dancing version with every option ticked on demo and not the one you may be looking to buy.

Not many will have the base spec car on demo because they don’t want to sell you that one.
