When is Valve's multi core patch getting released?

CSS is CPU limited, after the Christmas 2005 updates (yes I remember it well) my AMD 2500+ would bottleneck the fps out of me, but before that update it was fine.

Here's an extract from Game Informer:-

What about people who are going multicore? Are you supporting that as well?

Walker: Yeah, if you’ve got a multicore machine, it helps a lot. As I say, the quadcore systems that we have here, their frame rates are just insane. It’s like 300 FPS at 2500 by 1900 or something like that. Those cores are just chewing up the animation systems and particles. All of our core technology systems, the engine itself is shared between TF2, Portal and Episode 2 and so on, so all the work that’s being done there is being shared across all of those products.

Excellent. I don't know what i'm more excited about, the patch itself or the games :o :p

yeah i have to say, that picture is not on high, at all. that looks like like low hl2 settings tbh. we've all seen the vids of ingame footage, and it was MUCH better than that.

i cant wait for it tbh.

Just completed HL2 not 5 minutes ago (playing both HL2 and Ep1 through again for Wednesday), the vortigaunts look far better than that without any texture mods etc and i seriously doubt they would have downgraded the graphics for Ep2, in fact from what i heat they are improving the visuals quite significantly.

No wonder why valve took so long ;) guess they were trying desperatly to get the best out of multiple cpus.

If they really have nailed it and made good use from the extra cores means things are only gonna get better, I hope crysis and UT3 share the same performance gains !

The vortigaunts have got a makeover for EP2. They will look similar to that in the picture but a bit better textures.

Imo they look better than way because the old models made them look really old, but these new ones have more depth and show off their figure more.

Source already runs amazingly fast with dual core support it will be out of this world. I read somewhere along the lines of literally twice as fast this means I'll score near 200fps average in TF2 with everything cranked to absoloute max, 1680x1050 16xAA/AF

You read that in the Imaginary Times!

Just joking :p

Yeah, that guy knows what hes talking about:p

Oh My God we have a smarty pants in the house!!!

Judging by the quality and smoothness of the HD trailer for Orange Box it's easy to see that the games run superb on quad core and that quad cores were used during recoding for those videos!

How do you display the fps of source games?? Do you have to use fraps or is there a way to do it in the console?

I didnt think any games on hl2 were held back by the cpu really

sp games usually arent(some are like flight sim x) ....its usually when u go online and there are lots of other players about ....all that work the cpu does..where they are going and shooting...stuff like that.
sp games can be too when there are lots of npc's about.

u can try it yourself if u like....try an empty server and see how high your fps are....then log onto a server where there are 25+ players and see how your fps shoot down when they are close to you... even when not in view.

Yeah my FPS goes right down on Zombie Mod maps even if the maps are basic as **** when lots of people are on screen or in the server at all.

Can't wait to see what performance increase this patch gives, I get the same in TF2 at times, the frame rate drops dramatically when a few people litter the screen.

You are aware that trailers are often recorded with settings that mean they hit far far less than 30 FPS and then are artificially sped up in the post-processing of the video, aren't you?

It will be interesting to see how much performance improves with the updated engine but all these "OhMG! EXTRA FIVE BILLION FPS!!!11" claims are a bit of a joke.

This has never been the case for Source games because ever since STEAM started distributing HD trailers for VALVE games they have always ran as fast as they look in the trailer as do the graphics look as they did in them too.
