The original overclocking movement was an enthusiast movement. You didn't just buy the top-end chip, you bought something mid-range and spent ages making it perform like the top-end.

this is actually great news, some members in another thread were saying a law wouldn't help, but it bloody will. especially if it stops retailer scalping too as its really bang out of order business or not, making money shouldn't be at the expense of the consumer getting ripped off. we already get shafted enough with tax and vat etc.

Hear me out, today it's almost all paypal, or some form of electronic payment. We KNOW we've got the money but because we're not physically holding a wad of £20s, has it less of a mental connection to us? Have we lost that mental connection with cash and caution to protect it/value it more?

If you were now to be given a wad of seventy five £20 notes (1500 quid) and you had it in your hand as hard cash. You'd probably think more about it when you've got it in yoru hand and are holding it, as opposed to clicking a button and that disconnect we have nowadays, when handing it over for a new graphics card (3090 for example)

Companies IMO, are taking advantage of this. They know people are losing that connection with cash, due to the electronic methods of payment, so they feel they can take advantage of that disconnection. You think LESS about it as you don't see or feel the cash during the transaction, than you would with a bundle of notes in your hand.

The price is high because the demand is high, it's as simple as that. I don't know what anyone thinks they'll achieve by hating on people that decided to buy one. Especially on a forum owned by one of the worst culprits for increasing the price out of sheer greed.

If you can't afford one or you can't justify one, then get over it. You're not going to whinge the price down no matter how hard you try.

We're just going back to where it used to be. At one point a PC was very expensive for the average person. Then things got more competitive and cheaper. Then less competition and more ready credit and the prices have been driven upwards. There's now more global competition for stuff and a bigger pool of people prepared to pay. More gamers, more demand, higher prices.

I'd say this is the new normal and is going to get more expensive and your income is likely to be closer to static. I'm betting consoles will get a lot more popular!

One thing I was thinking about today concerning Nvidia and the 3080.

You cannot get ahold of a 3080 at all, never in stock from what I can tell. However the 3090, although has a lot of variants out of stock does show availability in some areas and indeed seems to have stock drops more readily than the 3080.

Now Nvidia knew after the epic fail that was the 2080ti they would not convince anybody to part with £1400 for the 3090 (read 3080ti) especially when the 3080 is so good and close to it on performance levels.

So do you think Nvidia are either deliberately holding back boards for the 3080 or making less on purpose, knowing that (and we have seen this happen) people will get sick of waiting for a 3080 and then just cave in and buy a 3090 instead?

there isnt much stock. stock is going in retailers and people working at them have been having them themselves and selling on ebay or shops themselves just scalping the price. manufacturers have even been caught just selling on ebay. msi for eg was caught doing it. so imagine stock is super low some retailers even at launch big ones got about 100 cards. once employees or others just hoover them up and sell em on ebay there is nothing left to go out. they wont be mass made for a good while yet.

so prices are just high and will stay high until enough can be made to satisfy or...law comes in tracking orders or punishing scalpers. with big enough fines to stop em.

I'm sure that Nvidia have been selling a lot of cards to miners. The caveat to this is that they are business to make money how they see fit.

I hate cash as it’s stinky and full of harmful bacteria and viruses.
We should stop using it ages ago. I do console repairs and every time I get paid in cash I give it all to my girlfriend as I don’t want to deal with it.
Hate having coins in my wallet when I get change after paying with notes.
And cash is easily lost. But that’s just my personal opinion I literally hate everything about physical money.

I suspect this is more about tax than about consumer protection, although I suspect we already have laws that apply here, it's just they're not being used in the right way. Ultimately, I can't see a government being concerned about how much is charged for what is a luxury good with no real societal benefit - why would the way people price a PS5, XBox or GPU be any different to handbags, shoes, cars etc. But what they will be concerned with is whether anyone is making a profit by trading in these things and then not paying tax on it.

Agreed.

I'm all for freedom to retailers but the whole release pricing problem across the industry has got a bit out of control. Granted there are maybe real reasons like queue infrastructure being needed, administration of pre orders etc, but some retailers are charging double!

Would be nice to have some guardrails in place for consumers, it's all been made worse by being hostage at home with nothing to do, and gaming for a lot of us is an escape, morally forcing those people to pay whatever price to escape wasn't a great move.

I think the ticket scalping was more to do with unfair trading, e.g. not providing information on seat location prior it sale, incorrect names on tickets, tickets sold which were not allowed to be etc.

Referring to Covid here. We are forced to stay home, unless you're one of those ravers.

Granted no one is forced to buy GPUs but for many gaming during all of this has been a way to get away and still socialise. I expect for many that involves buying new gear to enjoy it even more. I speak as one of those, my rig is 5-6 years old now and can't do what is needed.
