Where is the first floor?

Indeed. A zero balance is much better than having a massive overdraft.

When I paid off my credit card it had a balance of £0.00. After I closed the account the balance showed as £nill.

Zero is an even number that exists between 1 and -1. Null or nill is nothing, it has no relation to anything.

So calling the ground floor the 0th floor is logical. But saying that because its the 0th floor it doesn't exist because 0 means nothing is not.

But your counting floors which is done in storey's, levels are done so by counting the transition needed to reach them in the same way that age is.

But if a building has a ground floor, that is the first floor. The zero would be no floors, as in no building I guess.

Why would you gain an Apple, aka a floor, by merely walking through a door with no change in elevation?

Because you walked into a building and entered the first floor. The apples are awarded to the floors visited, not the stairs climbed.

What have the stairs got to do with anything? They are irrelevant because there are many ways to enter a building at different levels regardless of stairs or elevators. As I said, any building built on a hill with have a different number of floors on different parts of the building so it is perfectly possible to walk from ground level into the 3rd floor for example.

Where my GF lived in Switzerland I would walk from the street level at the back of the building (with parked cars like any normal street) and enter the building at the 6th floor without taking a step up or down. I would then descent 2 flights of stairs to arrive at my GF apartment. This I would have visited 3 floors (6th,5th and 4th). We could then descent the otherwise of the building to floor 1 and get out at a new street with parked cars.

Stairs and ground level are completely irrelevant to the number of floors in the building and the floors that you would visit on a path from one location to another. What matters is the number of physical floors

You gain a number by a change of elevation, not merely stepping through a door horizontally. So why on earth would you gain an Apple by stepping inside a building?

Oh jesus, my head just exploded!

This is bob, bob is about to climb a ladder. Bob is old and can only climb one rung at a time. What would you call the rung Bob will put his leading foot on.

By what rationale?

I think you'd be on the nth floor of the local police building :)

Na I'd escape by jumping out of a first floor window. Unfortunately this would probably end with a trip to A&E so maybe we should adopt the American system for safety reasons.

No, you'd be safe jumping out of a first floor window. As it is on street level though you'd be hard pushed to find an opening window.

we've had the stairs argument, and it's number one.

walk into a building, you have just put your foot on the first floor. You know, the first floor the builders built on the foundations.

What the yanks are talking about is they use floor to describe a space, those that are inside a building.

The Brits uses the number as the changes in elevation.
