Where is the first floor?

The problem is that you can't apply the rules of Mars bars or whatever to buildings. You can have no Mars bars but you can't have no floors. Therefore you start on the ground. You cannot think of it as Mars bars/ladders/apples. It is not the same.

Of course you can have no floor.

Be outside.

Have no floors of the building you are not in.

You enter a building and are given an apple. You go down one level and an apple is taken away. You now have 0 apples, you go down another level and an apple is taken away, you now have 0 apples.

Therefore, every floor bellow the first floor is 0

it goes into negative numbers

check my bank balance at the end of the month....that's negative. It means I owe the bank money :D the lower down you go, the more apples you are gonna have to pay back

If the ground floor was 0 and the next floor up 1

When you go down from 1 to 0, you would stop to exist in time and space...else where would you be? Nothing is nothing. Where not talking about 'labels on the lift door'

Again, zero is not nothing. Zero is zero, its a valid number. Nothing would be null, which reprisents an absence of anything.

There is nothing special about the ground floor, it is a floor like every other floor, requiring stairs or an elevator to access it or not does not change the nature of the structure.

Going by the logic that if you just walk through a door and don't climb a flight of stairs changes the structure then you end up in all sorts of illogical traps. E.g., you park in the underground car park and take 1 flight of stairs up to hit the ground floor - according to some peoples logic since you have taken a flight of stairs you are now at floor 1, but someone walks through the front door and meets you, since they didn't walk up a flight of stairs they are at floor 0 yet you are at the same frigging place. There is just no sense in it. Another logical trap - a house is built on a hill, there are 4 levels on one side but only 2 on the other. The 4 floors can be labelled A,B , C and D. If the front of the house is on the low side of the hill the you walk into the lowest floor (A), if you enter at the back of the house you might enter 2 floors up from the lowest (C). According to some people's logic if you walk in at the back of the house this is magically ground floor and magically floor zero.

The bottom floor of the house is not the same as the ground of the garden etc. The moment you walk into the house you have changed what structure you are on and have entered the first floor of the house.

So by that rationale you cannot be outside a building you are not in?

You're in your 1st year. Like you'd be on the first floor of the hospital when you exited it as a baby :D

But at what point are you 1, when do you get the Postman Pat card, what day is that ?

ie, the existence of a floor

How many floors are there?

We're not disputing the existence of floors. We're arguing over the logical naming of them.

Ground floor is "0" because it is neither above or below ground. The floor above it is "1" and the floor below is "-1"
