Where is the first floor?

ask someone next to you to count to ten

Do they start with 1 or 0?

They start 1, therefore when you walk into a building you are on the 1st floor

or....walk into a shop and ask for three mars bars. Does the assistant hand over 3 or 4 mars bars?

1,2,3
0,1,2,3

I'd have thought a ground floor was named such because it is at ground level,
And to get any higher you have to add floors, so the next level higher than ground is the first floor.

The upper ground floor of car parks is confusing though

If you live in a bungalow, you do not live on the "first" level, you live on the ground level. Or on the street level. There is no second+ floor, hence no reason for it to be called first. First implies there are more.

That doesn't work here.

You walk in on the ground floor. You have neither gained nor lost elevation therefore you are at 0. To start at 1 implies you have gained something already, and you have not.

The ground floor is the floor below the first floor ..and so the floor above the ground floor is the first floor , Unless you're going to the second floor which is two floors above the ground floor which is one floor below the first floor

I'd take the lift.

The zero still exists whether you count it or not, just the cashier would look a bit daft handing over zero mars bars (why is zero plural?).

It would be equally daft if you went from floor 1 to floor -1 hence the existence of floor zero, aka the ground floor.

One thing is for sure, I'd walk up.

Even if you enter the building from the roof?

It's not zero, this is where the confusion arises. It's the ground floor. The floor on the ground. The first floor is the first floor up. It's very logical. The Mars bar analogy is a bad one because you cannot have no Mars bars. But you can enter on the ground floor.

I don't have a Mars Bar. Is something wrong, am I meant to? :D

Wait what? Are you saying it isn't possible to have no Mars Bars? I am in a permanent state of no Mars Bars because I don't like them.
