Which 7800????

that does make sense. the 50 i save could go elsewhere on the build... i might go for the DFI Lanparty Ultra D board???

spec as follows then:
X2 4400
dfi ultra-d
x1800xt 256
g.skill hz pc4000

Does that look okay??
*getting the board and the card first... other stuff will wait till next payday

That spec looks very good :)
Enjoy.

That is the 256MB X1800Xt so if the x1800xt 512 only just beat the gtx the 256 edition will be a bit slower

Err... what are you talking about mate? Have you suddenly relegated yourself to common-joe mode, where the extra 256MB of RAM makes the card twice as fast?! The clock speeds are the same, therefore there willl be NO difference at all unless you are running ultra hi-res with max AA and AF. Go look at some reviews and benchmarks.

Sorry, but I am forced to use this

:p

Original poster: I and most people who don't care about brand-loyalty would reccomend the X1800XT 256MB card. And put the spare £50 towards something more useful (i.e. alcohol!! :p).

Get back in your box sumang!
I think there is some performance hit in 1280 and above (providing you are cranking up the AA/AF). But the difference is probably not worth the extra £50.
Thats what I keep telling myself and my X1800XT 512mb anyways :P

Link?

And the difference to the 512MB XT is actually about £90 ;) The £50 was the difference between the X1800XT-256 and the 7800GTX-256.

eeek you are right! keep thinking the 512mb version is at the price i brought it :P
For links.... well i cba'ed tbh cos it took me a while to find last time. Basically look for reviews on the X800XL 512mb.
There are some comparisons between that and its 256mb sibling - although surprising less than you would think :s

And pretty much the same story for all other games on every other website. The only game with any noticeable difference was Half-Life 2, but then again both cards are still pulling in 60+fps, so it doesn't really matter to TFT owners does it ;)

So err yeah, why don't YOU get back in your box :p

I'm quite tempted by the 256MB X1800XT now, smashing price for the performance... NO NO must FIGHT the upgrade itch... aaarrggghh!

hey 5fps difference at 1280!

So there is some difference, but it isnt worth the price difference.
Ok for your next post, i will start you off:
"Dear King Goks, Im sorry I doubted you. I would love to be your shoe shiner..." ;)

well after all of this ive decided to get a X1900XT lol i know it way over my budget but i dont care.. it seem to be the best card sub £400 and the only thing beating it is the 7800GTX 512... lol

Actually i think the X1900XT is faster than a 7800GTX 512MB.
Most importantly the X1900XT is much cheaper.
The X1900XT is a really great buy. Enjoy :)

i will try... :) it'll probly bottle neck till i get my new processor... but i might just wait till am2 comes out to get a new cpu??? but should still kick my 5900XT lol with a 3d mark 05 score of .... wait for it.......... 460 lol..

cant wait... thanks for all the help

You bought the best card you can. Its better than the 512MB GTX and much cheaper. Better card all round. Apart from the X1900 XTX but who cares. What brand of X1900 XT did you get?

im GETTING the HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-048-HT) £352.44

Look at that objectively. 5% increase, while both are cards are pulling in about 100fps with AA and AF maxed out. And if you re-read my post that's ONLY in Half-Life 2. Nothing else cares about the extra RAM :p "Negligible" is the word that comes to mind!

Of course the case might be different with the X1800 cards, but I haven't seen any hard evidence of this.

I would still recommend spending less and getting the X1800XT since you are gonna be maxed out at 1280x1024... but good choice, might as well get the best if you can afford it :D

my acer will do 1440x900??? but i think your right i wont use all the power of the 1900 with my small res monitors so i might just stick to the 1800 which is £120 cheaper i think. for the 256. that should run my 1440 and 1280 smooth??? with everything full

x1800xt it is then... my final upgrade will be:

Asus A8N-E nForce4 Ultra (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-088-AS)
Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-044-CO)
Hiper HPU-4K580-MK Type R 580W Modular ATX2.2 PSU - Black UV (CA-005-HP)

and in a few month a 4400 and XMS3200 ram :D or whatever is out then lol

lol great change of mind mate.....several times eh ;0

Anyways good choice in the end the x1800xt will be faster than the gt no doubt and probably a bit faster then the gtx with the latest drivers installed :D and as everyone already knows the 512xt does convincingly beat the gtx 256!
