Which car would you chose?

Well, personally i'd go for something not on your list!

but given how much you keep going on about E39 BMWs, get the 530i

You've already said its your dream car, and if you can afford the car and the associated costs, then buy it.

Watch the insurance on the Scoob

I got a quote of £1400 FC for a group 20 Alfa GTV 3.0V6 with 2yr NCB in Canterbury

It went up to over £3k for an Impreze Turbo!

5) MX-5 :) get a decent special edition for that money, great fun to drive, amazingly fun in the summer. You don't NEED four doors and 5 seats now so why not have one now while you can :)

otherwise i would be tempted for the beemer out of your list

IMO the 5 is just to dull. I love them, I really do, but the 3 series especially in coupe is just a bit more interesting to me. Unless you really want a cruiser, which is what the 5 is, I have had more fun driving large engine 3's.

The mondeo is nice, but its just a mondeo. I see 5,000 just on my way to work, and its only round the corner. The ST220 is nicer, the new shape looks good.

The Impreza is great, recently to do with my Job I have had the oopurtunity to go out in all manner of Scoobies, and they are fantastic. BUT, you have to ask could you live with one everyday? Im not sure I could now, they are just a bit to basic inside, and a bit to harsh sometimes. Saying that though, you could buy an awesome Impreza for about 8,000.

I think I would still sway towards the BMW though, although I dont see the logic behind buying the 5 over a similar engined 3.

The Scoob is the only one I've not actually had a quote for, come to think of it.

Saving extra money is not an option and neither is waiting - I'll basically be in a position to spend the cash around April-May time, and if I don't take it, the next chance will be late 2008. I've got between now and April/May-ish to decide what to do :)

I'd be tempted by a 330 but cannot afford a good one. All I can afford are older pre-facelift examples - not keen on the looks of those, so I'd want a 51 plate Sport and they start at about £12k. You can get a good facelift 5 Sport for my budget, but you can't get a good facelift 3 Sport for the same money.

Oh, I guess I should also say I want something newer than my Mondeo, which is V reg.

Go for the e39.

If you get the Subaru you'll be driving hell for leather everywhere because that's what the scooby does. It's not a refined machine to gently transport youwith the least effort from one place to another, it's a machine that goes flying down roads and round corners all the time because that's what it's built for and that's the pleasure it gives.

The e39 on the other hand will do that as and when you want it to (but not quite to the same degree) but the rest of the time, when you aren't in such a hurry, you'll be able to enjoy just being in it without making the engine scream.

As for the Fords, I don't see the point. Yoi've got one already, and the performance increase won't be that great. The might be much rarer than the BWM but that's not the perception that most people have so why do it?

Mmm probably the ST220. Just don't like scoobs that much.

Do you really think that the beemer looks more sporty than an ST220? I really have to disagree with that! Going off the two pictures you posted I'm really confused as to how you think that? Am I alone?

*Note* I wouldn't choose any of those 4 if it was me! Id get a little bit more money and go for a vx220 :o

You have to make your own mind up, and I suspect you already have but try an ST220 first. My ST has been in the garage today and I really hadn't realised just how good the handling is - I had a Mk3 LX sliding and understeering all over place driving along roads at the same pace I'd become accustomed to in the ST. Its a great drivers car.

I looked at 5's and just found the Mondeo felt more modern.

Get the BMW 5 Series. Seriously more pimping than anything on that list (not in the traditional pimping sense, just don't know how else to express it) It won't seem like you've gotten a new car, just a slightly better version of the old one (unless I'm mistaken). Go for the BMW, for the luxury, road presence, and sheer impressiveness of it.

Do not by an Impreza. Simply do not! You'll love it's performance, drive and handling - it really is exceptional to drive. You'll then hate it for being probably, unfortunately, one of the least reliable cars ever built. I know a number of people who have bought these cars and what I've just said is their sentiments exactly - great fun, but so expensive to run (Unless you get a super-lucky one) it isn't funny.

Odd, I know lots of people who've had them, including family, and they've never had a problem.

Your family may well be a combination of lucky and very kind to their cars :p

I know a few Impreza about at the moment two of which are on their second and one on their fourth engine. Subaru are also 3rd from bottom in the WhatCar reliability index for cars from 93-Present, despite the non-Impreza's doing averagely and better!

Its hard for me to understand where your getting all this money from to get a car like this, so id need to know your financial sitchuation before i were to comment on cars. Id go for the boring and unrelated option of getting a morgage and moving out of home.

The ST220 has fantastic road presence up close and in the right colour (ie. blue or black!). There's no mistaking it for an LX anyway. It's also absolutely fantastic to drive - not exactly a hot hatch but bags of grip and a very strong engine. Seats are great as you'd expect, stereo is rubbish. It's very quiet as standard, too quiet for my tastes but I believe Dangerous did something about that with his...

Personally though, I'd buy buying the BM. It's a classier car all round, just a shame about the 'image' problem.

i really wouldnt bother with an ST220 i dont reckon.

if your paying out big dollar may as well go for something a bit more exotic / turbo style imo.

Vr4, scubaru, 200sx, prolly some others on there too which i would take over an ST

I'd take the scoob, but i'm not you - I think you're pretty set on the e39. Why keep your Mondeo though? Surely you should sell it and use the rest of the money for buying an even better BMW?
