Which "Hot Hatch"?

But other than maybe a Corsa VXR or Clio, you aren't going to get anything nearly new (<1 Year) for £12k.

Lets also remember the OPs budget is actually around £18k - I think the suggestion of a £12k Golf/ST/Cupra was one that was meant to be a more sensible plan.

The OP seems to be happy spending up 18k on a new as possible Civic Type-r. I think it's best we keep that in mind ;)

Well exactly!

Yes I appreciate that, I'm just saying that a £12k GTi isn't actually sensible for someone that wants a nearly new car. Or are you saying that it's sensible to suggest something that's entirely unrelated to the OP's wishes?

Not for someone that wants 'that new feeling'. They're all three years old with 40k on the clock.

Yeah but that's not what I said. I said that I felt the "sweet spot" for a hot hatch is about £12K. That way you get the best balance of new shape, good condition, and a nice engine.

If you want to go <12 months old you'll need to inflate the budget quite a bit, but I don't see the point as there are some really smart and nice cars at this price point. Once the private plate has gone on and the car has been made to look immaculate, nobody will be able to tell it's three years old.

This seems like a really nice Mk.V R32.

Although if I had the OP's money it would be oh-so-tempting to get a used Focus RS, i'd probably just be sensible, test drive all the main contenders, and make a decision at about £12K and keep the rest.

I think whoever posted that was merely suggesting a better way to purchase a new(ish) car.

A £12k Golf/Focus/Leon is mostly going to be the same car as an £18k one, just slightly older, and perhaps slightly less well specs, except he'd be in a much, much better financial position - which is the point I believe they were trying to make.

I agree that £12k is a great price point for hot hatches. Maybe you should voice this opinion in a thread where someone is asking for a hot hatch for £12k?

By the way, £200 is a great price point for second hand bicycles. But OP wants a new feeling car, not a bicycle.

Disagree that £12k would get you a car that feels as new as an £18k one, no mater how well the owner has looked after it.

I'm trying to give the OP advice. He doesn't have to take it but the fact that his stance melted somewhat from his opening post would suggest he is open to sensible and good advice.

I've already explained how he can get that "new car" feel from a car at about half the price he was originally planning on spending.

If he wants to take it, then good. If not, then that's okay too - but i'm going to suggest it nonetheless. :)

[Edit] I mean seriously, this is utterly gorgeous, pity i'm not a VTEC fan tbh. http://www.pistonheads.com/SALES/1690288.htm

Had my car been a normal ST2 model, I would have been able to pick it up for around £12k when I bought it - having test driven new ones as well, I'd say mine drove as new, and it still does today, at 2.5 years old and 30k miles. Those VWs must just be badly built :)

Utterly gorgeous haha :D. I'm sure it's a great car but they just look so very bad.

MikeHiow - it may have driven as new, but did it feel as new inside also? Fords start rattling after about five miles so I'm sure your older car wasn't as tight in terms of interior squeaks and knocks ;). I'm reasonably certain that it's fair to assume that the newest feeling car at £18k, will feel newer than the same newest feeling car at £12k.

Surely how new a car feels inside is down to how much you trash it as an owner unless the car is particularly badly made?

I would not expect your car for example to feel any different inside now than it did a year ago?

I've suffered one rattle, and that was from the stereo "remote", quick fix and sorted.

There is nothing on my car to make it feel anything other than nearly new.

A friend has a 3 year old Golf (a diesel GT, but no reason the same wouldnt apply to a GTi) which has done 60k now and gets washed about once a month. There's nothing about it that wouldnt "feel" new given a good valet

12k on a hot hatch is what i will be spending on my next car, and currently mkV golf gti's look like the best bet, only other thing i like the look of around that price is a 1 series bmw, but would probably have to go for a 130, and then would also have to spend more then 12k
