Which MMO...?

Eve if you like space.

Warcraft if you don't.

Might want to look at Lord of the Rings Online.

Warcraft, imo, is miles ahead of the rest. Best mmo currently out.

WoW with a friend + triple XP is hard to beat.

So hard to beat that I even forwent the friend bit and double-boxed just to level up a couple of characters.

:p

Granted, I did have way more fun when a couple of mates and I were playing together (one DPS, one healer, one tank). Ahhh, good times.

Seriously, WoW. There's nothing that will ever touch it in my opinion. :)

That must be a terrible way to feel...to feel that no matter what comes over the next few decades, no matter what advances in technology or gameplay are made, that nothing will ever be better than this time right now in game X. I truly dont think I would want to feel that way about any game , in any genre.

I thought like that once until the shine wore off and became bland. Now that I've experienced Full loot pvp I dont think I could play anything else.

WoW is certainly not the best MMO ever made, and their will be plenty of MMO's that will steal it's thunder in time to come.

It's not terrible, I cope just fine haha.

WoW was my first 3D MMO that I got really stuck into. I don't think I'll get the same feeling about another MMO that I had when I first started playing WoW.

Thats understandable...UO was my first MMO and I have the same feeling towards that which you have towards WoW. UO absolutely knocks spots off every other MMO for me. Though having said that, I still have hope that one day an MMO will come along which betters it (not likely given the route that MMOs are going down :( but I can hope) . Would hate to feel that nothing will ever top UO though, would make me feel like I have already had the best gaming I will ever have and its only downhill from here.

It might be down hill from here.

I've not played an MMO that comes near to that rush I felt wandering in to Ironforge for the first time. In fact, I'm yet to find a game as good as Pharoah ! I remember been a kid spending all my spare time on that game.

While I'm not doubting UO wasn't a brilliant, fantastic game. Do you not think, that with the MMO genre progressing in such a "samey" feel, you're not going to see a lot of those little things that made that game special for you no long have or are marketable to the modern MMO gamers.

Warcraft, at current is the best MMO out, Lord of the Rings second, thats about as far as I'd go to say worthwhile playing MMO's.

I for one, await the day they remake X wing, or Pharoah, as you wait for them to make an MMO that offered as many in game things that UO did, however I think we might of seen the best in those previous games.

Warcraft, showed that MMO's don't need a million, billion little in game features, and can simplify the game play and class mechanics and shows that it appeals to the Masses, and works well. What they have included is fantastic.

after looking at your list of all the mmos you have played there is one that always sticks out...Neocron

truely epic mmo in its time, i wont go into all the great ideas and innovations it brought to the genre but if they had a company like blizzard to polish it i would sign up for a lifetime sub or at the very least 12 months.

its free to play atm due to paypal problems but nothing has changed so dont expect anything new just good old nostalgic feelings.

anyway im back into wow and playing with a friend its quite fun. we seem to spend all our time leveling alts even though both of us want to raid, we just enjoy trying different characters.

dont listen to all the wow haters (though reading through the comments theres far less than i expected), if i were you i would play wow with a friend(s) as the game offers so much you will always have something to do. what you have to avoid with wow is "i'll just do one more thing before i goto bed and you find another 10 things to do" so just know when to call it a night, thats all you need.

im no wow fanboy and i didnt really like the concept to begin with but the game really does grow on you so dont disregard it after playing 20 levels.

I think what he is saying mate is that he has experienced an MMO that offered much much more than beautiful vistas. I can guarantee you wont get an adrenaline rush in World of Warcraft, where you would've in Ultima Online.

I can say, that playing Darkfall has opened my eye's and I now know that Full loot is the way forward. More Sandbox mmo's are needed and less funfair MMO's.

then again each to their own, Many people like million little features a well rounded off trading system and WoW doesn't offer these.

WoW is plain and simple fun, with no risk involved.

Ultima Online is "Hardcore", full loot game that will get your blood rushing.

Believe me, once you experience it, most other MMO's will falter in comparison.

I hope that one day some of the features from UO make a return, but I must admit its looking pretty bleak. The fact is that most modern MMO players simply wouldnt tolerate the things that I feel made UO so special.

Stuff like housing thats present within the main world..not in a seperate instance. Full looting of people you kill in PvP. FFA PvP where you can attack anyone anywhere. The ability to steal items from other players backpacks while they are simply stood around. Customisable houses, created how you want rather than a preset building shape. No quests, you make the aims and content, the human imagination is an incredible thing if its given the chance to be used, some of the stuff players came up with in UO was incredible. No purple/orange/red coloured uber items of godliness. GM run live dynamic events. Player controlled ships. Skill based system rather than level based...and so so much more.

Hell in UO you had dyes with which you could dye your clothing and furniture that you had crafted. Just look at how many "modern" MMOs dont even include dyes.

The trouble isnt really the MMO designers though to be fair, the trouble is that the average MMO player these days is a very different kind of person with different aims from an MMO.

It always nerks me that an MMO from 12 years ago has more "features" than a modern one.

To me it seems that MMOs have got more and more dumbed down, easier and easier and more and more simplistic. I mean even my 3 year old daughter can play WoW, I've sat next to her and watched her play it (with a somewhat shocked look on my face I must admit :) ) . That kind of ease and simplicity is a great thing for the MMO, wonderful for it financially. For me personally though, theres a reason why I like my MMOs somewhat more involved and complex, the same reason why I dont still read books called John Picks up his Ball, and Jill goes to School. I hope that one day a dev does a UO style game again and does it well. Its an MMO style that appeals to me much more than the varied EQ clones which swarm the market these days. All personal taste though.

SWG was prob the closes to UO before it got watered down. As it had a few UO Developers working on it.

I could spend hours just messing around in my house showing off lewt and weapons placing furniture.

PvP meant something and was just not a grind for pvp xp to spend on gear. Build your city then place bases and defend them with pride

Much as I miss UO though, I just wouldn't have the time to play it today, not if I didn't want to be just a big target every time I logged in.

I do miss SWG though. That has to be the only game that I ever spent hours travelling from town to town clothes shopping :D

All this talk is making me misty-eyed! :p

It's between WoW, Darkfall and Champions Online now... With a swing towards WoW as I have a friend playing it. Darkfall appeals because it's freeform and Champions, because, well, I like flying around! :p

I played WoW for nearly 5 years and have quit and gone back 3 times now.

WoW is an absolute great game if you haven't played it before, but its nothing like it was before all the expansions, and that was when WoW was at its best for many gamers.

Triple Xp etc is grand and all but you barely even experience all the content has to offer while leveling because you level so fast you have to go to another area only to scratch whats on offer there and then be forced to move again. Because WoW is 5 years old the game looks rather dated (but still quite nice). The quests up until 60 are mostly non elite (use to be a challenge, lore, etc). Its more of a race to 80 to play with your friends (more so colleagues) at end game and todays end game is nerfed (made easy) almost every month the encounters are made easier for average joe to experience.

This has led to problems, other players stealing loot as its so easy to do now so it is "Pugged" hardcore gamers get there items only to see a month later it is exceptionally easy for the average player to earn via "badges" and what not. Having the best items in the game use to be a real achivement for the time and dedication you put into it. This is no longer the case.

The other side to it all is its popularity with the servers. You will find servers are eaither to full or under populated (there are a few that are balanced). If you go on a server that is "full" and you try to enter an instance that is not in Northrend you have a very high chance of encountering being unable to enter the instance due to so many people using them. There is a priority giving to the Northrend instances thus making any old content very hard to enter during peak times, it can sometimes take over an hour of trying back and forth to get into some older instances.

Dont get me wrong here the game is very good, very addictive but it is hardly the all being all saying crap of the MMO franchise. AION looks extremly promising, you hardly read about major issues, forums are praising the style of play, lore, balance, pvp etc.

If you want a new MMO try a game where you can enjoy and learn it with everyone else, not a game that has been around for 5 years or so where the elitists are typically bitter, the ninjas run riot and free and being forced to get "boosts" by friends and colleagues to gear up and level faster. Its not fun.
