That must be a terrible way to feel...to feel that no matter what comes over the next few decades, no matter what advances in technology or gameplay are made, that nothing will ever be better than this time right now in game X. I truly dont think I would want to feel that way about any game , in any genre.
It's not terrible, I cope just fine haha.
WoW was my first 3D MMO that I got really stuck into. I don't think I'll get the same feeling about another MMO that I had when I first started playing WoW.
Thats understandable...UO was my first MMO and I have the same feeling towards that which you have towards WoW. UO absolutely knocks spots off every other MMO for me. Though having said that, I still have hope that one day an MMO will come along which betters it (not likely given the route that MMOs are going downbut I can hope) . Would hate to feel that nothing will ever top UO though, would make me feel like I have already had the best gaming I will ever have and its only downhill from here.
It might be down hill from here.
I've not played an MMO that comes near to that rush I felt wandering in to Ironforge for the first time. In fact, I'm yet to find a game as good as Pharoah ! I remember been a kid spending all my spare time on that game.
While I'm not doubting UO wasn't a brilliant, fantastic game. Do you not think, that with the MMO genre progressing in such a "samey" feel, you're not going to see a lot of those little things that made that game special for you no long have or are marketable to the modern MMO gamers.
Warcraft, at current is the best MMO out, Lord of the Rings second, thats about as far as I'd go to say worthwhile playing MMO's.
I for one, await the day they remake X wing, or Pharoah, as you wait for them to make an MMO that offered as many in game things that UO did, however I think we might of seen the best in those previous games.
Warcraft, showed that MMO's don't need a million, billion little in game features, and can simplify the game play and class mechanics and shows that it appeals to the Masses, and works well. What they have included is fantastic.

I hope that one day some of the features from UO make a return, but I must admit its looking pretty bleak. The fact is that most modern MMO players simply wouldnt tolerate the things that I feel made UO so special.
Stuff like housing thats present within the main world..not in a seperate instance. Full looting of people you kill in PvP. FFA PvP where you can attack anyone anywhere. The ability to steal items from other players backpacks while they are simply stood around. Customisable houses, created how you want rather than a preset building shape. No quests, you make the aims and content, the human imagination is an incredible thing if its given the chance to be used, some of the stuff players came up with in UO was incredible. No purple/orange/red coloured uber items of godliness. GM run live dynamic events. Player controlled ships. Skill based system rather than level based...and so so much more.
Hell in UO you had dyes with which you could dye your clothing and furniture that you had crafted. Just look at how many "modern" MMOs dont even include dyes.
The trouble isnt really the MMO designers though to be fair, the trouble is that the average MMO player these days is a very different kind of person with different aims from an MMO.
It always nerks me that an MMO from 12 years ago has more "features" than a modern one.
To me it seems that MMOs have got more and more dumbed down, easier and easier and more and more simplistic. I mean even my 3 year old daughter can play WoW, I've sat next to her and watched her play it (with a somewhat shocked look on my face I must admit) . That kind of ease and simplicity is a great thing for the MMO, wonderful for it financially. For me personally though, theres a reason why I like my MMOs somewhat more involved and complex, the same reason why I dont still read books called John Picks up his Ball, and Jill goes to School. I hope that one day a dev does a UO style game again and does it well. Its an MMO style that appeals to me much more than the varied EQ clones which swarm the market these days. All personal taste though.
