Which mobo/CPU/RAM upgrade from my 2500k?

I'll give the XMP setting another blast but from what @DarkHorizon472 said above, my particular RAM doesn't appear to play well above 2800MHz (or in my case, even at stock!)

However, according to my motherboard manual, in order to run memory in dual channel mode, I have to use either slots 1 & 2 or 3 & 4 (and I've checked this as I previously tried them in 1 & 3 and CPU-Z reported the memory running in single channel mode!

I would return this memory and try with a new kit that is proved to be compatible with Ryzen chipsets and Ryzen CPUs.

Also try the ram sticks individually as one may be faulty. Check cpu / gpu temps as well. To check if your psu is struggling plug in a older Gpu as they use less power. Realbench is handy for testing stability. Also carefully check using the motherboard manual all power cables are in. Make sure your vega gpu has both power cables in.

I would also reset your motherboard to defaults to see if that helps.

Hmmm, no blue screen crashes since swapping the RAM to the other slots - although I have had a couple of occasions when The Division has crashed to desktop!

@DarkHorizon472 I don't think I changed any BIOS settings but will try a reset anyway and I've checked the various power cables (and the Vega card definitely has both power cables in - not daisy-chained on the same cable either but rather 2 separate cables!

What is the returns policy with OCUK in respect of my situation? Am I OK to just call up and say I want to swap the RAM for a different kit?

I have sent things back to OCUK before without any issues under the 14 day cancellation window (Fans and Ram etc).

Samsung B Die but it costs a lot more.

The 8 pack 3200 memory above is high quality and bdie. Almost all on Ryzen just plug it in , set memory to auto and it boots fine at 3200 c14. That’s why I changed to it from Corsair lpx which only worked at 2933c16 and also I expected to keep the ram while upgrading to a faster later generation Ryzen cpu so it would run at a higher speed.

I'm very tempted to go for this memory if it's more likely to be stable (at this point stability is a wider concern ahead of speed - I've just had my PC reboot while running the Realbench stress test - although I'd popped out of the room so this is an assumption!)

However, the chipset compatibility doesn't actually show B450 but rather "Intel Z170, Intel Z270, AMD B350, AMD X370" - will this definitely work with my B450 board or would I be better off getting a "better" motherboard too?

It should work absolutely fine. The B450 isn't listed as that released after the other chipsets so probably just hasn't been updated in the description. Also Ram is Ram so in theory any DDR4 kit should work with any DDR4 Motherboard. It is just that Ryzen is a bit more fussy.

At least if you go with the 8Pack kit you have the Man himself on the forum if you get any issues.

Return the ram and buy the B-Die... though, the extra cash layout starts to make one wonder if going ryzen was worth it over intel.

I wouldn't buy amd cpu for my own system, single core speed is king for me and always will be.

You mean single threaded performance yeah?

Well at the moment I'm getting crashes in both The Division and Dirt Rally so I've got to try something!

How do I go about swapping the RAM - do I need to contact OCUK and arrange it or do I submit something online?

Right, I've arranged to return the RAM - before I push the button on the 8Pack Edition I was wondering whether anyone would be so kind as to measure the height of it for me?

All I'm conscious of is that slot 4 on my motherboard is obscured by the stock CPU cooler and so ideally I'd like to make sure that the RAM I'm getting isn't any taller than the existing stuff otherwise it's not going to fit in that particular slot!

I know @DarkHorizon472 said he had this RAM - sorry to ask as I know it's a bit of a faff given it is most likely in your machine!

You can remove the top part of the 8Pack Ram to make it 37mm:

MASSIVE HEATSPREADER WITH STYLISH TITANIUM-GREY ACCENTS
The modules are equipped with massive black anodised aluminium heatspreaders in a sandwich-style design. This, in conjunction with the titanium-coloured centre and the notches, allows for a sleek and premium aesthetic design. The total height of the range is approximately 45,6 mm and should be kept in mind when choosing a CPU cooler. The heat dissipation capacity of the Dark Pro series is also especially high, meaning that they have plenty of cooling capacity spare during overclocking. Furthermore the PCB cover of the heatspreader can be removed, which reduces the total height to just 37 mm and markedly increases compatibility with larger CPU coolers.

Right, I've ordered the 8Pack RAM and it will be with me on Monday - in the meantime I'm running the existing RAM at stock and am getting fairly regular crashes to desktop in both The Division and Dirt Rally and I've just experienced a blue screen crash whilst trying to boot into Uplay!

Obviously I'm hopeful that the problem IS the RAM and that the new kit will solve the stability issues (and with any luck, let me run at the 3200MHz speed!) - however, is there any way I can confirm that the RAM is the problem as opposed to the motherboard and/or PSU? (I'm taking the Vega 56 out of the equation because it worked just fine for a couple of weeks whilst slotted in to my i5 Intel setup)

Run memtest

Yeah sorry - should have been obvious that one! Doh!

Been a while since I've used memtest - I assume I am better off using memtest86 rather than the Windows-based memtest64?

Also, how long should I let it run for and should I be changing any of the default settings??

Well it's not looking great - I set it going on whatever the default settings are and after just 20 minutes it's already reporting 29 errors!

I presume this is pretty definitive and there is no reason to leave the test running?

also, having had a read though the rest of the thread, the memory issues could be:
1) cpu imc not strong enough to run overclocked memory (least likely though, 3000mhz should be achievable bar the crappiest of chips)
2) board compatibility (#2 on the list) gigabyte boards are known to be more picky with ram - hence why i've migrated over to speccing MSI boards for ryzen - also MSI boards have better VRM solutions for their B450 boards
3) borked ram (most likely)

yeah, send it back. the ram is faulty.

Thanks for the advice - I've already arranged the RMA so the RAM will go back tomorrow! (48 minutes in and 108 errors so I've stopped the test!)

Wish I'd known that Gigabyte boards were a potential issue too tho! :(
