Which Vacuum Cleaner?

We've had a Miele for about 5 years and it has been the best vacuum cleaner we've ever owned. I wouldn't buy any other make now.

My mother bought me a Henry hoover for Christmas there as my 1200w bubblevac broke it actually started to smoke on the fanbelt thingy as i was using it so much ( I run a tight ship ) but it's amazing the wee brush attachedment is amazing for doing the floors and pretty much anything. Hell i even henry my netbook


But! Around Christmas my hard partying uncle came around and when he walked into the kitchen he said whats up? I see you have a Henry, Damm good hoover! See like everything else in life if men do it we do it better i would never want or trust a woman to do any of my cleaning. Absolutely nothing to do with how they perform, just the economics of running a cleaning business.

Dyson. Sure Henrys are reliable but you arn't a professional cleaner so it doesn't need to be robust. While Miele might be a good make thier expertese isn't vacuum cleaners.

This. It's because they're cheap and robust. Granted they're all right at sucking up crap, but they're certainly not the best at the actual job of hoovering.

Used to have a Morphy Richards £40 special that was fantastic and lasted 11 years of hovvering everything (even the gutters outside in the summer)

We now have a Vax Mach Air upright vacuum. Possible one of the most annoying things in our house - and I have threatened to throw it into the middle of the back garden enough times.

The cable gets caught in the angle joint, the rotating blades have an auto-jam over current cut out that has a mind of its own and just decides to turn off requiring a reset - bits have broken off it in less than 2 years and most importantly - it doesn't lift dirt very well/has and has hardly any space for the dirt/dust and is a pain to clean (even though its a cyclone and should be just a matter of opening and emptying)

We also have a Dyson DC31 handheld - which in itself is a very powerful/handy vacuum - but this developed a fault with the battery just after a year. The hoover now turns off after every 5-10 seconds of keeping the button pressed - which means you constantly have to let your finger off it then re-press.

We recently got a vax air 3 for free! Why coz vax are awsome! We bought there last top end model 4 years ago and there warentee is fab, if it breaks within 6 year they fix it, and if its completely gone you get a new updated one. The air 3 is the best hoover i've had to date, powerfull, lightweight and easy to manouver

If you're cheap and want something that will outlive most shelled reptiles no matter how you treat it then buy a Henry. If you have some extra money and want a genuinely brilliant vacuum cleaner then buy a Miele.

We've had a fairly trusty Dyson Animal DC22 (5 years or so) from Argos Outlet store. It was £119. Recent mini build project has meant it's seen its best days to the point where, when you turned it on, you could see the brush wheels turning (there were spinning that slowly). New filter kits can be had, but I think the cyclones themselves were screwed and word on the street is that they are a sealed compartment on that model.

Saturday saw me in a popular shop that sounds like "**** jewis" and picked up a Miele Cat and Dog 2200w bad boy for £219. It's frickin awesome, but I do miss the design aspect of Dyson and how neat it was as a vacuum.

Heard Miele are brilliant but I've only experience of Dysons. We've got 2 at home, one is one of the old grey and purple up rights and one is one of the small gold/grey cylinder ones. The purple one is well over 10 years old now and has seen better days but still picks up like no tomorrow.

I used to work for Hoover/Candy and I wouldn't touch their products with a barge pole. Horrific quality with nothing but problems I found.

After reading a number of reviews, I'm not sure this is true any more.

Almost all the latest models of Miele vacuum cleaner seem to have a problem with the filter coming lose and losing all suction.

My Henry packed up last week, and I was all ready to buy a Miele S6220 until I read about this problem. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Apparently the cheaper models are all now made in China too.

there does seem to be a few reviews with this issue on that site. it could be a design fault which will be addressed. may be worth ringing miele and mentioning it as it'd be a shame not to buy a miele based on this esp if it's been dealt with now

the cat and dog is no different to the normal version, you just get an air powered head as well. you could buy the other versions and then buy the turbo head if you wanted it.

Had a Dyson DC07 Animal which got used for everything from carpets to cleaning up brick and concrete dust. Cleaning it and wasting the filters takes 5 minutes every 6 months.

Split the hose, but got a 3rd party one off EBay for £10.

The only reason it got retired was I was cleaning out the car with it an must have knocked the handbrake off as the car rolled back over it, cracking both cylinder and the carpet brush section.

Now have a DC41 which is even better.

If you do go for a dyson, they have an outlet store on eBay where you can save yourself quite a lot.

It's called something like 'dyson outlet' you'll be surprised to know.

There's also many recent reviews on amazon etc stating similar issues with various current models.

I paid a visit to my local Currys yesterday to have a look for myself. The mechanism that holds the filter in place does seem exceptionally flimsy. Especially after removing and replacing it a few times. It's just a couple of moulded plastic clips. All models I looked at used the same design.

I will try Miele, but this does appear to be a huge oversight for what is supposed to be a premium brand.

Peoples experience with Miele customer services sounds less that exemplary as well.

We have a Dyson Animal for carpets and a Henry for everything else.
The Henry is knocking up for 20 years old now, been hammered in every way possible and the only maintanance it's had is a set of motor brushes and i also bought a 5 metre long hose which is brilliant.
