Which Yongnuo flash to choose?

Well guess what, my YN-560 has decided it doesn't want to zoom any more today! The motor spins but the head doesn't zoom inside. I checked out a DIY fix mentioned on some photoblogs but they didn't help, my guide driver is metal and not plastic as shown in theirs and it's as if the spring retainer that latches the head onto the driver rod is deformed a bit so isn't moving the head in and out and instead just sitting there.

I may be joining the 460II club soonish as I bought the 560 from non UK ebayer, I don't think shipping + packing to do an RMA is going to work out cheap :/

just push the head to roughly the 35mm setting and leave it, the 560 has roughly the same output as the 460II and is more controllable (finer adjustment). It also has better recycle times.

I'm still waiting for my

YONGNUO Speedlite YN460 ii :) my first flash gun

Only thing is are Enloop the way to go? :P

24mm would be better, Recycle time and the battery pack port is irrelevant with the 560, because the difference between the 460ii and 560 in terms of recycle time is negligible where you can only measure the difference shooting full power, and if your shooting full power, you can only get off about 10 shots in quick succession before thermal protection kicks in and shuts the flash down.

The difference in recycle time is also likely only due to the fact that the 560 is about 1/3 a stop less powerful, therefore needing 30% less current upon recycle, but like you said the light is however more evenly spread especially with the ability to zoom out to 24mm, which will be better in light modifiers like umbrellas that Khaaan! is using.

I'll have to wedge something to hold it in place but the seller appears to be local to me and I am looking to see if they can do something before I try that :D

I do like the 560 though, light spread definitely was good, A good match with my 430EX which can also zoom to 24mm.

If you end up trying to prop the zoom at 24mm, it might be better to use a good glue, one that can withstand high temps, and doesn't go brittle.
Don't let anything touch the flash tube, as it get's super hot, and could easily become a hazard.

ive bought RF-602 Wireless Flash Trigger for CANON with 2 Receiver

But it requires:

4 x AAA battery for receiver
1 x CR2 Lithium battery for transmitter (i know you can get these anywhere)

I've been looking at Eneloop pack which has 4x AA + 4x AAA but i dont know if they are 2000mAh?

You don't really need rechargeable batts for the RF602 kit as they last absolutely ages anyway. My first set lasted over a year and the transmitter CR2 battery is still going 2 years on.

Apparently one of the best (if not the best) of that type of always ready rechargable are the ones I purchased, VapexTech Instant 2300mah...

EDIT - the Eneloop batteries you mentioned are likely 2000mah for the AAs and 800mah for the AAAs

I take it most of the AAA - rechargable are 800/850mah as standard?

>> Bought the Vapex ones you linked :)

Fair do's i thought i might as well kill 2 birds wth 1 stone and get the pack if i don't use the aaa's their is always something around the house :D

I know this is getting off topic but do you need special chargers for these VapexTech batteries? Secondly, is using these batteries in long term but low power requirement goods a waste e.g. remote control, clock, etc?

Waiting on a Yongnuo yn468. Will post some comparison pictures with pop-up flash and the yn468 when/if it arrives.

Well a new 560 is on its way to me! The seller has said some of their stock may have a problem althouh rare and if they could send me another which I am happy with.

What mods could I do to the non zooming 560 anyone have any possible ideas?

I was thinking optical slave as a kicker or both 560s optical triggered and 430ex on the camera for bounce fill!

you dont need a special charger, just dont get a rapid one. i wouldnt charge them at anything over 700ma. I charge mine at 200ma or 500ma.

The vapex are ok, i have some. They arent quite Low self discharge in my view, they dont hold there charge anything like an eneloop, but they are better than the average nimh. They have an advantage over a eneloop in that they have a higher capacity.

so, full days shooting with flash, charge the vapex the night before. Other than that, i say go with eneloops, i havent found anything that beats them...

I'd use the 560 as a kicker, or background light with a plastic diffuser on.

I was certainly looking at that as the main option! Just researching what materials to use to make a diffused softbox now :D

These batteries such as the eneloop and the VapexTech etc. how do they compare to the standard Energizer batteries when I use them in an Yongnuo flash, which will last longer? or what is the battery life difference between the two?

Thanks, sorry if it has been answered previously.

I just leave my Energizer 2450mAh ones and tend to get several hundred shots from them easily, I only charge them after a good handful of sessions. Recharge times of the flash are also very good, about 1 second at 1:1 power on the 560, for example.

The replacement 560 arrived today btw, zooming works \m/
