strobist blog has the answers

Thanks! Loads on their FlickR too! a lot of portraits & product shots!

Just had a look at the 101 Lighting etc

And in the youtube video they show a snoot & Grid

Decided ill just make the snoots out of foam and get some velcro n just wrap it round the flash.
& Also going to make a softbox for product shots too unless there is a cheap one that someone can spec?

So is a grid added to the snoot?

This is interesting, I'm looking at getting a flashgun myself for a Nikon (which rules the 468 out). I have no idea what to look for but was looking at the YN460-II after reading the start of this thread, and I'm even more interested at this price! Did the unit come with a diffuser or do I need to get one separately? How much did the other 2 bits of kit cost and are they worth it?

I was originally looking at the Nissin Di622 for around £100 and the diffuser for around £10, is the Nissin worth the extra cash?

diffusers for what situations? I really cant find a use for them. they suck light, the dont soften it really (the light soruce is still small point source, i suppose there is an arguement you get bounce from nearby walls etc, but the vast majority is still head unless bouncing)

Learn to bouce and use a catch card and dont bother with a diffuser.

I can thoroughly recommend getting umbrellas etc, now you are talking diffuse light...

re the nissin and the extra cash - I like to think as my yn460II's as disposable. If they break i really wont get upset, i abuse them, they fall off things, i stick velcro to them, cereal boxes... tape... whatever comes to mind. Not sure i would do that to a £100 flash

Isn't the 467 made for Nikon?

This is why I asked, because I have no idea with flash :p how would I go about using the bounce card?

@feriso:
The 467 is, however at the price for the Nikon (£70) from the bay, I'd rather pay the extra and get the Nissin where I know I would have no issues with returns should it become faulty. The thing that concerns me is how much of the flash features are compatible with my camera (D3100)? I've noticed Nikon cut a lot of the features out of the entry level models, I just wish someone had mentioned this before and I'd have gone for something more expensive... Hindsight I guess.

EDIT:
/facepalm the same seller sells the 467 for ~£47. So would I be as well to go down this route?

Read the strobist blog, specifically the section on bouncing.

I used the card to give catch lights in peoples eyes, its really doesnt give much more forward throw than that. most flashes have a built in popup card, including the yn's. Go for a 465 @ £40 :::: edit 476 @ £47 sounds cheap so why not, at over half the price of the nissin. Dont forget the cost of a four pack of eneloop batteries

And the d3100 is a fine camera - i would largely ignore the post saying its not good enough, thousands of others would disagree with that post, me included. The flash features you need will be there, ittl, manual.

Don't get me wrong I love my D3100 to bits, I've just noticed a couple of features I'd liked to have had missing such as teathering and exposure bracketing, and I figure there are more too which I haven't had to need to use.

Is there anything else I should get on top of the 467? If not then I'll order right now if there is I'll try and throw them into the same order.

its probably worth getting a couple of wireless triggers. Yongnuo have just released the rf603 which are both recievers and transmitters, or the rf602 are single units so you would need a tx and and rx.

I use rf602s at the moment, the rf603s look slightly more handy in that they dont take odd batteries.

Oooh the RF603s look like the Bowens Pulsar units I use for studio lights but of course at a fraction of the cost - Will have to grab a trio when I can for use outdoors \m/

The added benefit is that it looks like you can use one in xmit mode AND plonk a flashgun on it while it's on the SLR - Something you can't do on the Bowens so this could be great for adding fill in to act as a kicker while the rest work wirelessly!

Well ive managed to make some snoots (3 total) all diffrent length :D just gotta test em!

Other than that still playing with the flash gun

Also orderd a diffuser & wireless remote for shutter £9 :)

Next week going to try and aim to make a lightbox / Tent

Don't know how affective 1 flash will be though! :(
